That's because both of you clearly have more experience with the other thing and so you fear the role you don't play as much or not at all :D. That's normal, tank and healer have bit more responsibility by default, but I would argue that in difficult content with DPS check, DPS must work just as hard and actually have very little room to mess up as well. When you get more experience in a role, you can't be bothered, trust me :D. Experienced tank or healer realizes what is their job and most importantly, what's NOT their job. Someone died? Doesn't mean it's your fault, not by a longshot and with experience you won't let it be your fault and there is imho little stress, because the pople who died most likely killed themselves :D EDIT: to elaborate a little, lot of the stress tanks and healers feel is self-impossed or a result of external factors (peer pressure) created by newbs. In real life DPS has way more responsibilities than newbs like to think. Tank can't hold your MAD BURSTO? Do you have button to drop threat? Then it's your fault. Healer didn't manage to top you in one global after you ate the telegraph you should have avoided and the next one killed you? Your fault, no discussion even. Tank is there to hold the mobs they realistically CAN hold and healer is there to heal the damage you HAD TO take. The rest (the clusterfuck salvaging) is optional work on their part, not a requirement for the job

Out of all the beginner tanks I've seen there was something they all had in common. They didn't know how to cast Shield Lob/Tomahawk/Unmend/Lightning Shot properly. Yes it's a good way to grab immediate aggro, but... When you're already in melee range it's not effective and then they miss time their aoe because of gcds resulting in mobs running for the backline. What helped me most when I started tanking was learning how to proper select targets and learn the max range of my ranged attacks. If you can activate it at max range your gcd will be refreshed when all the mobs gather towards you and all you need to do then is simply use an aoe. Sounds simple for skilled players, but like I said...beginner tanks have alot of trouble doing this strategy.

This was very informative. Thank you. I always wanted to play DRK but "tankxiety" prevented me from doing that, especially since I was a complete beginner who just joined the game three months ago. The way I went about it is that I started by picking a ranged DPS up to level 50, switched to an easy caster with a melee combo (RDM), and went all the way to 80 and got used to the game mechanics. Afterward, I went back to level an easy melee DPS with a limited need for positionals (i.e. SAM). And finally, after getting my SAM to 80 and getting used to raiding on both my RDM and SAM, I went back and started working on my DRK. It's been a very long and roundabout way to get to tanking. But as a new player, getting different DPS perspectives while familiarizing myself with the game's mechanics felt like a much safer and less stressful way than throwing myself at tanking right off the bat. Tanking is now going very smoothly and with no stress because I know what is expected from me and I'm familiar with most encounters. TL;DR: if you're like me and can't deal with the responsibility of tanking on top of learning the game, it's totally fine. This game is unbelievably alt-friendly. So, nothing prevents us from starting as DPS then switching.

  • @ClassicalPan

Definitely a long way to get to your desired role, but you approached things in a way that helped you to feel comfortable and that's great. For me, coming from DPS, I'm a baby and I just Googled "which tank is the easiest / most fun?" and mostly figured it out that way. Warrior seems to be the majority vote. I tried GLD and was so bored with it and finally dropped it at level 30. As a melee DPS player at heart, the MRD/WAR was immediately more fun to play because you get a combo early on and it feels much more DPS-y. Many people say DRK is their favorite and that may be fun for me too. Although, I was talking to someone about playing old content unsynced and he said DRK was really slow for that. Not sure if WAR is a higher DPS tank, although I think I read that it is. For my DRG brain, though, I'm sure any tank is going to feel incredibly slow by comparison.

  • @geekwars3998

    @geekwars3998

    2 жыл бұрын

@@ClassicalPan It's been a year since I posted this. It's been an amazing journey, and I'm now at a point where I'm very comfortable doing high-end content on all roles (including tanking Ultimate raids). There is so much to learn and experiment with in this game that it can be overwhelming. But I'm happy to share some of what I learned along the way about tanks: If you're looking for a tank that feels like a melee DPS, that's definitely GNB. It was designed from the get-go to be a tank that feels like playing a melee DPS with no positionals (because that wouldn't make sense on a tank). This is why lots of players tend to pick GNB as the most "fun" tank to play. WAR is more like a self-sustain machine with lots of regen and a brain-dead rotation that is very far off from what a melee DPS would feel like. It's great though, despite its simplicity. WAR is generally the go-to MT because it's super comfy for healers (due to the crazy self-sustain) and because Holmgang is a massive cheese (it's the shortest immunity CD). DRK has a good on-demand burst and the busiest opener of all tanks which makes it feel kinda hack'n'slash-y in its gameplay. So, I wouldn't say it's slow. If anything, WAR actually feels slower to me (all WAR burst is condensed into their Inner Release window - and even during that window, they are basically just spamming one button). DRK also has the most powerful shield in this game which, alone, puts it nearly on par with WAR for self-sustain. Generally, in high-end content, DRK is picked either as MT or even paired with a WAR if tank squishiness is a problem (e.g. progging TEA which has two boss cleave phases where both tanks are continuously getting slapped like crazy). If you're looking for the solo-king, be it for old content or max-level dungeons (i.e. when healer/other party members die halfway through the boss), look no further. It's 100% PLD (GLD becomes PLD at lvl 30 and the gameplay changes drastically at max level). Technically, all tanks can solo. But PLD has by far the easiest time doing it due to being the only tank with an active healing spell. If you're looking at tanks based purely on their damage output, then it's generally GNB > PLD > WAR > DRK. Though it really depends on the encounter and the strats the party is using. For example, lack of uptime strats (as tends to be the case in Party Finder) means PLD likely becomes the top due to being a melee/caster hybrid who can maintain uptime out of melee range. Some fights might also align better with specific CDs (60s vs 90s) which changes the tanks that would have an easier time optimizing their output. Keep in mind though that things change drastically below max level. Jobs aren't really properly balanced below 80. And with Endwalker just around the corner, things might be quite different for the next tier later this fall. My personal recommendation is to just play all tanks. They share gear anyway (minus the meld issue for WAR specifically) and they're all fun in their own way. Assuming you enjoy tanking in general, you'll have an absolute blast swapping between tanks on an encounter basis.

Turns out, Dark Knight is the COMPLETE opposite of what im used to, but I wanted to learn tank because I tended to appreciate good tanks while i was leveling up my WHM. I never realized how much more important a good healer is than a good tank. I actually had my first negative experience in this whole community recently from my WHM when i was tanking a dungeon i never done before. He refused to heal me because I said "hey guys im learning to tank and I never done this dungeon, ill try to go slow!" and said his dps (they were 3 in a party but only he was toxic) is more important than me...then called me weak when i asked them to just vote kick me out lol. I had so many bad tanks, and not once was i toxic to them. I just stepped my heal game up and realized i dont have time to dps cuz this man isnt even using his defensive cooldowns.

If you're THAT bored, that you're pushing new players into the uncomfortable situations, not only you're pushing them away from the role but also from the game. I don't like wall to wall tactic. If I'm doing a dungeon not only I want to learn it as I've never played FF14 before, but also I know it will take a while. If you want to a quick dungeon, don't queue up and then behave like an asshole. I will never understand this behaviour.

Well said !! I was a fool started playing on a friend's Ps4 we was roomies, not knowing once they moved, there went my process i was i believe a level 50 to 60. I was a bit heartbroken i said aw no problem love the game. I was 53 yrs old. Lol . I lost. My grown kids play to trying to make it get their level before the next expansion. They talked me in to playing again.. yes I bought my own Ps4 lol. Told me to work to this point I believe it was $25 - $50 they said they show me how to get back to my higher level. I was like really. Omg. I worked like it was my second job. I said I'm at the level you to me I needed to be. Money talked next 5 minutes I was a Drk knight level 70 which that was my goal. I was like 10 yrs old again. Kid in candy store. Not knowing the knowledge and skills or how to use this character. I went into my first dungeon fail big time. Just flat on my face. I Had a DRK KNIGHT deck out with the most beautiful armor, very intimidating looking. By my 3rd dungeon still failing. I just quit the game. It's taken a week to get my account back. Oh I still have a level 70 Drk knight. I've started all over from level 1after 2 yrs. Thank you for mentioning that.

I went acn/sch, and am only now starting to build up my first tanking class now that I have some knowledge of the early maps. But for newer ones I absolutely am going to learn them as healer or dps first. Tanking seems like the most stressful role, because at least with healing in early dungeons, you can usually get away with looking at health bars and just spamming attacks in between reactive heals.

Tanking is probably the toughest role in a dungeon. If you don't double or wall-to-wall pull, other party members will likely start trying to do it for you, which you may or may not be able to handle with your equipment. Tanks also have to be very familiar with boss moves and mechanics, because if you miss a few dodges or soak a tankbuster, you're dead and quite possibly the party with you. That said, it's generally not that hard, as trash pulls are trash pulls no matter what dungeon you are in, and most bosses' mechanics are easy to understand or don't require anything special from you. New options from Endwalker enable you dive into dungeons for the first time with an NPC crew, allowing you take your time and learn without judgement or expectations.

As for learning about classes, it’s not a spoiler to mention DRK-you can already see all the jobs listed including DRK on FFXIV’s webpage that lists all the classes. Tanking is a lot easier then it was back in stormblood, I remember marking priority targets in part to remove troublesome adds or to focus the dps on the target i'm hitting , anyway you kinda forgot to talk about the enemy list, all enemy show up on that list, even the untargetable ones, you can see their ability cast bar but most importantly, you can see their enmity status, green = very low enmity, yellow = high enmity, orange = near top enmity, red = active enemy target, while it has somewhat uses in tracking mobs, in boss fights you can use it to track your enmity as an off tank, given party list can also do that but the enmity bar there is harder to see compared to the colored icons in the enemy list, plus as an off tank if you get a certain lead over the rest of the group, you can effectively turn your tank buff off and should the mt croak, you'll immediately become the active target and once they get resed they can simply provoke it back without risking enmity ping pong.

There's very specific lingo in the FFXIV (probably from the broader MMO community) that are meaningless in of themselves and won't make any sense to those of us who are brand new to it all. I will never forget the first time I tried to tank I was told to turn my tank "stance" on. I was completely confused. The only thing I saw in the game that was labeled "stance" was sheathing or unsheathing the weapon. I'm not really sure the right way to tell someone new to turn that buff on, though (it's called something different for each tank job, which just adds to the confusion)... I just wish we had more beginner friendly ways of saying it, and I wish that the game itself helped us understand these concepts better.

i find that i either struggle to keep the aggro of all the mobs. or trying to pull one enemie over when i am already fighting a boss.

I just started playing as the job that requires the most responsability ... This is my first MMO, and honestly it's the first time in any game I've ever picked tank, but you know, Cecil is a Paladin so am I then! Thanks for all the information, it seems that for the most part I'm doing well, but there were some things that I defenitely need to polish and practice now that I have this information, thank you again!

i think healer has the most responsibility. As a WHM, if im good enough, i can keep even the most braindead tank alive, and by extension, my dps lol.

@@xiphosmaniac I thought about it too, but after some extreme trials, if we die, the healers die almost instantly, I'd say tanks and healers are equally valuable

@@sawyer3244 It's tanks=healrs>dps for sure. you can fight longer battles if dps is shit with good healer and good tank but if tank and healr are bad you cant really carry them as a dps, if they die it's gg.

@@sawyer3244 Yup, there's always a need for tank and healer in a team, assuming you're doing content for your lvl and not below. But don't underastimate DPS either, if every dps is good you'll plow instances super fast, maybe unpopular opinion but most important thing a team can have is similiar mindset and strategy imo combined with people around the same level of knowledge, gamesene of the game makes a great team. I ain't some pro expert about this game i played about 370 hours now, but yeah i played lots of mmos.

I convinced my best friend to start playing. She’s starting as WHM, so it’s allowing me to finally level WAR or any other tank I’ve been afraid to 😌
