Now do a chart showing how many of these tanks can actually move let alone be able to participate in actual modern combat and we may find the list to look extremely different

Exactly. For instance, Greece's 1335 MBTs are mostly 1960s vintage M48 and Leopard 1s (and 100 1950s vintage M60s!) which essentially useless on a modern battlefield. The Brits' 250 odd Challenger IIs, in normally configured battle groups, would destroy them piecemeal such would be the scale of the over-matching. This is where infographics can be pretty - and pretty much worthless.

Most tanks were lost to attrition, not in battles. The designer of the t-34 died in one from phenomena due to the horrible conditions. It sounds paradoxical at face value. But think about it this way: If Switzerland is neutral, it has no "allies" to speak of. It must rely on itself. Completely, 100% self reliant in a military sense. That isn't to say no one would come to their aid. I am sure someone would. Because only a despot would attack a historically peaceful, neutral country like Switzerland. But the Swiss aren't NATO members. They aren't even members of the EU. They have no mutual defense pacts with any other countries. They remain completely neutral. Meaning all they can really count on is themselves and some historically defensible geography.

they used to have two batallions (120+ tanks in total), then 2008 they decided nope tanks are too expensive and sold pretty much everything of to finnland. Then crimea happend and yeah the plan to have zero tanks changed and the last 18 tanks got transfered to germany for upgrades to A7-versions and integration into the german army. So curently 16 tanks are still operated by the Dutch as part of the germanjoint Tank Battalion 414 (part of 43 Gemechaniseerde Brigade), to ease german manpower problems. It goes even further the dutch 43 Gemechaniseerde Brigade, ist part of the german 1.Panzerdivison... So the netherlands has tanks leased to german batallion with dutch/german crews, which is part of an dutch brigade, wich is part of a german divison. So they operate under foreign command... and were part of a mutinational NATO Battlegroup Lithuania in the 2021 rotation. I think most people don't have any grasp how interconnected militarys in euope actually are, especiall german and the netherlands: Netherlands for example also provide a lot of support for the german navy. The HNLMS Karel Doorman is activly used by german units. The plan is that the german batallion will be permanently attached and stationed in the netherland under dutch command, currently not the case (as far as I am aware of).

You actually hit the nail on the head with that last remark. You will tend to find that european nations have differing forces and focuses depending on their location. Nations to the eastern borders of europe tend to have heavy tank and land armies, such as Poland and Germany. Nations a little further in focus on specialised fields that support those to the east and compliment them well, Netherlands possibly falls in this category. And nations in far safer areas such as France and ol' blighty have expeditionary forces that, while less ground heavy, are highly specialised and can be deployed anywhere in the world for small scale specific use

Of course, the size of a country's tank fleet depends on its needs and economy. It's also worth asking whst the confition, capabilities and readiness of a nation's tanks are actually like in real life, as opposed to the invemtories as they appear on paper.

  • @strangemah8066

Numbers don't really matter. We have to take account of every tank and from wich type and era they're from, and how much they are strong, reliable and effective in combat. Without forgetting the level of professionalism of the crew on board. All of these factors play a big role in a major conflict, Russia has the largest fleet of tanks but go look and see how it is performing in the Ukraine invasion because of medium quality of a big portion of their tanks, or how Egyptian/Arab coalition tanks got outblown by Israeli tanks in the Six-day war because of poorly trained crewmen. But still a good video, keep up :D. (Can we get an updated video of Universe size comaraison please ?)

I will not speak for all countries, but as for the former Soviet republics, in particular, I can say for Russia, most of their tanks are on conservation. Moreover, the years of production from the 60s to the 80s (T-55, T-64). Later models such as the T-72, T-80 and T-90 with various modifications are all in service with the troops. Therefore, the figure given here is of course very conditional. And if we also take into account the events of these days, then the figure becomes completely irrelevant. It changes daily. Equipment regularly breaks down and is replenished with a new one. With Ukrainian tanks, things are somewhat worse. All reserves from conservation that could be restored by the Armed Forces of Ukraine are already using, and there is no way to produce new ones, due to the absence (destruction) of factories. Deliveries of tanks by Western allies have just begun, from the fact that the number of tanks in Ukraine and those countries who supply, also seems to be pointless. Accounts are taken before and after hostilities.

Misleading , or not sure what the significance of this is ... I rather have 10 Modern Era Tanks ( M1A2 ) Rather than 500 obsolete WW2 Era Tanks

In February 2023 Germany had 282 Leopard 2's. This does not include the 18 A6's that are/were being send to Ukraine. Roughly a hundred of those are not in active service, but being converted from A6's to A7V's. The total number of tanks for Germany is set to be 320 Leopard 2 A7V's in 2025.

@Floron Don't spread false information dude. France has a bit over 200 LeClercs and is modernizing those. But not buying additional ones. Also: What for? Russia, the only threat to security for Europe, is currently running an aggressive disarmament program. A couple hundred tanks are okay, because those are top notch. And we're not alone, were part of NATO and the EU. Everyone throws in a few and suddenly you've got thousands of modern MBT's.

@Floron I hope they don't. France and Germany grew closer than they've ever been since Charlemagne thanks to the EU. The alternative is a splintered Europe with wars down the road...

The numbers don't say much as you can see in Ukraine. The logistics and strategys are important! And how modern the equipment actually is...

The reason why numbers don't help in Ukraine is because they're not mowing down every single building in front of them. Guerilla tactics made the US lose (or run away with tails between their legs) at least twice in the last 100 years. It's the same tactics the Ukrainians are using. Hiding in buildings with anti-tank weapons or using drones. Aside from that you always lose more material when attacking if the opposing party(defenders) has similar gear. If they wanted to bury Ukraine in the ground they would just send a Sarmat ICBM their way and wipe the country of the map.
