@@mjoelnir58 finns were nazi allies, who blockaded Leningrad for approximately 900 days causing death of more than 600k civilians due to starvation. I don't know about their amusement but they were treated lightly for what they had done. And I was saying about north Norway, not Finnland. Your little mind can be blown apart, but norwegians weren't really up against the liberation of their country by the russians. Dunno what was wrong with those guys, maybe they just didn't know bolsheviks eat children for breakfast and things like that. Or maybe they didn't like the nazis you seem to be so fond of.

Great narrative Dr. Fletcher (Phd of everything with tracks)! I worked as a volunteer at the USMC Air/Ground Museum at Quantico, VA and pretty much rebuilt a "Suka" from the ground up. Our specimen was in dreadful shape with many missing parts and lots of corrosion. I had about 2,500 hours into her by the time I was PCS'd to another command. Our vehicle had been "donated" by the NKPA, and the bullet holes in her indicated that it wasn't necessarily a voluntary contribution. She had run over a land mine and the lower hull was breached along with the oil pan of #1 engine and that seized up the engine. We toyed with the idea of making her a runner but decided not to and "pickled" her. We figured some fool would eventually take her for a spin and undo many hours of backbreaking work. I also restored a ZIS-3 which was the towed version of the 76.2 fieldpiece, one project led to the other. My next project would been a Soviet 122mm howitzer but CMC sent me elsewhere. I might be the only Marine in history to get a medal for fixing Russian junk. Semper Fidelis lads!

I cant decide if that paint job is horrible or awesome.

I appreciate the last photo; it reminds us that all AFVs are usually deployed in groups, not single machines in quote-unquote "tank duels." War is not a solo vocation.

the su76 has a fine service record during ww2, being a light, mobile design, it became a key weapon system for the russians when clearing german held cities, where the su76m was used to demolish buildings and hard points, letting russian infantry storm the ensuing ruins, out in the field, it could almost keep up with the t34, and act as a support, flanking, and point defense machine, key flaws are cramped crew positions, and a lack of variable optics and not enough armour, however those flaws were easily overcome by the fact the td worked, and worked well, with high production numbers and plenty of spare parts, it was a well supported design, and the Russians utilised it to its fullest capability.

Isn't this the vehicle that lead the way thru Berlin, and smashed the defenses at the Reichstag?

T-70's are one of those forgotten tanks of the Soviets. They made over 8,000 and used them throughout the war and they were not retired until 1948. Of course they made over 13,000 Su-76's. 21,000 T-70 and SU-76 is not a bad wartime production number for this hull and chassis, eh?

..and he's got two engines roaring away in his ear 'oles. LOL

@@Vespuchian - I think EVERY Navy still has Prize Laws on the books. The US Navy paid a prize out for that U-Boat sitting underground in Chicago. Or was it in Michigan? I forget where, but the crew of the USS Guadalcanal got Prize Money for capturing a U-Boat in combat.

Really enjoyed the clip. Russians made over 12,000 of these. Partly to use manufacturing capacity that couldn't be adapted to Medium Tank production. The Gun was as good as a T34/76 or KV-I but it wasn't a tank and couldn't cope with being shot at. Sometimes though it was the only armour supporting an attack, and earns some credit for being better than nothing.

David Fletcher MBE should be the only person who does these Tank Chats. You can tell that he talks from personal experience and it make it much more relevant. I can picture him, brewing up while the rest of the crew are camouflaging the tank. Peace.

I had a large part in restoring both a ZIS-3 and an SU-76 at the Marine Corps Air/Ground Museum at Quantico, Virginia. Both pieces had been captured during the Korean War and both had combat damage. The ZIS-3 had holes in the trail and gun shield, probably inflicted by an aircraft. The SU-76 had run over a mine which punctured the right front floor. It was a dreadful amount of work restoring them but very satisfying to see the semi-finished product (it's very difficult to fully restore Russian WW II gear due to the difficulty in finding collateral materiel).

Being an tank nerd since 2000, i found WoT in 2013 and MightyJingles in same year and i have learned so much for thanks for these guys in Tank Museum and Jingles! This is just awesome. can't wait the tanksfest 2019! :)

Fun fact: Because these tanks were open topped, the concussive blast from a Panzerfaust round was less lethal. Whereas in a tank like the T-34, it could be disastrous. There were drawbacks of the SU-76 being open topped, but it did save the lives of some Russian tankers in the bitter fighting at the end of the war, where handheld anti-tank weapons were knocking out Soviet armored vehicles at an alarming rate.

Even so, I don't think I would have enjoyed a Panzerfaust round entering my space. And being open topped, not pleasant in a Russian Winter Offensive, although the driver would be warm!

The problem is, if a tank from Russia ever goes missing, they will immediately know where to look first. :P

I restored an SU-76 while working for the USMC Air/Ground Museum which had been "donated" by the NKPA. It was a tremendous amount of work but very enjoyable. The vehicle had run over a mine which punctured the hull and the oil pan of the forward engine. The distributor, spark plugs, wires, and coil were American made, everything else of Russian design and manufacture. My dad claimed that the engines was a copy of a 1932 Dodge flathead engine and when I compared the picture in an old service manual the two looked identical. My hat is off to Mr. Fletcher and his droll sense of humor. He is always very informative and interesting. God save the queen (from a yank in the colonies).

Mr Fletcher is the man of quotes.

A small quibble - the SU-76 was a very common vehicle in the Soviet Army, indeed its pretty much the second most important and common vehicle after the T-34. I assume Mr. Fletcher is referring specifically to the M model being “very few” during the war rather than the Su-76 as a whole. Also I somewhat doubt that a lack of armor and an open top was the issue in anti-tank combat, as the Americans had pretty successful open-topped tank destroyers. Soviet employment of Su-76s in the anti-tank role also tended to use them in camouflaged overwatch positions, so lack of armor wasn’t much of an issue if it wasn’t getting hit by AP to begin with. Rather the issue is more likely to be German artillery fire - which was called down on suspected or revealed anti-tank nests - and having an open top was very unhealthy for the crew when they had shrapnel thrown at them. This is why later Soviet TDs and self propelled artillery did not have an open top. Meanwhile the Americans - who never had to worry about artillery inferiority - could keep their TDs open-topped.

From mid-1943 to the end of the war more than 12000 SU-76M self-propelled guns were produced. It was the most mass produced Soviet armoured vehicle after T-34 (35 000)

It's something that the Tank Museum ought to reconsider as they may be aware that all German Stugs were crewed by Artillerymen, which may be the reason why they scored far more kills than the panzer troops.

Soviet light tanks were built not on tank, but on automobile factories, using automobile parts and engines. And those SPGs were built on top of those chassis - which made them extremely economically efficient, and fit for use

David Fletcher, national treasure. We really should capture some more Soviet vehicles.

It's not a tank destroyer. It's a self propelled gun to support the infantry. And for that reason it's the second most widely produced Soviet AFV of the war, after the various models of T34, despite not entering service until 1943. That the ZiS3 also has a useful antitank capability is a bonus to its primary role as a field gun.

Thank you, you are one of the rare people in the comment section who actually knows their stuff. It's astonishing how even the specialist of the museum which holds this piece makes such a fundamental mistake. It was designed exactly as an spg/support artillery, by mounting a _field gun_ on a chassis which can't be useful for the tank production anymore. The first batches of SU-76 (before its conversion to M) were delivered to artillery regiments. So, both ZiS 3 (the gun) in its towed version and SU-76M were for backline infantry support and artillery role. But could be used, if need arises, in AT role too, just with less efficiency. And even as a frontline infantry support assault gun, but only out of desperation and lack of other options.

This is my favorite war vehicle? I can't really call it a Tank, but the STuG gets all the hype. Sei Russ cranked out half again as many as these, and kept using them for another decade.

Please do a video about the Su-76i that served as a Td in the battle of Kursk. It was a excellent stop gap to till this td got the problems worked out of it and Russian crews loved it. 😎

I always felt that the Stug and Jag series for the Germans were under-rated. (yeah I know we're talking about Russian's but I can't resist). Sure a spinning turret is preferable, but not 100% needed. I believe M. Wittman honed his craft in a Stug-3. Self-propelled guns and tank destroyers are necessary complements to any armored corp. (or infantry corp). Ask any vet who ran into a Jag-Panther.

There was one case where SU-76 was better than all other options. In several cases around Belarus SU-76s coupled with infantry managed to flank around by going over swamps/bogs due to being only soviet vehicle in the service that could do that.

I don't know why but I really love the SU-76 for some reason.
