Tank Chats #33 Panzer III | The Tank Museum
Tank Chats playlist • Tank Chats from The Ta... The thirty-third Tank Chat, this time presented by Curator David Willey. Including a fascinating insight into pre-Second World War German tank production and how the Panzer III worked alongside it's fellow Panzers.
To find out more, buy the new Haynes Panzer III tank manual. www.myonlinebooking.co.uk/tan...
The Panzer III was conceived in 1934 as the principle combat tank of the Panzer divisions. The Museum's Panzer III went into action in the North African theatre of war and is believed to have been captured at the Battle of Alam Halfa.

My Grandfather rode in one of them over in Afrika. He was also in Bengasi. He was then captured in Tobruk and remaind in POW Prison until the end of war. Years later he donated pictures to "Panzers in the Sand" written by Bernd Hartmann, published by Stackpole Books.

Interesting to note that the Jerry armour was clearly inferior during their 'BlitzBosch'...as well as for the rest of the war, of course! Okay, maybe excepting a couple of good ones...
I just found Tank Chats. Well done, no irritating sound track as in the tank rebuild presentations and "documentary" programs. Thanks for an adult presentation.

I'm big lover of the panzer IV because you can continuesly upgrade the tank
The 37 mm gun called later on „Panzeranklopfgerät“ literally means „Knock-on-a-tank-device“. My grandfather talled me that.

Some tankers called it a door knocker. But with good aim, they could jam the turret of a T-34 and outmaneuver it after tearing up the drive sprocket. Then shoot up the rear.

@@goldenhawk352 I'm glad we can talk about as history. As a small boy in 1960, I lived in Munich. There were still hundreds of destroyed buildings that hadn't yet been torn down. Guys on the street of an age to be veterans had a lot of amputations. I'd seen one or two amputees in my whole life, never one or two in a ten minute walk. That was the aftermath of what your uncles and grandfathers survived. In honor of the dead of all armies, I hope we never have another like it.

No, it was “Heeresanklopfgerät” if you want to be precise about it.
It's a pleasure to listen to Curator David Willey who obviously knows what he's talking about. The video is very well produced as usual and not even drawn in annoying music all along : what more could we ask for?

I really enjoy these videos. Simple, pleasant, and informative. It's not like most high-production videos where they have to get a narrator with a gruff voice, various "experts", absurd CGI graphics, and annoying music. Just a bloke who knows his tanks (after all he is the curator) standing and giving a lecture with the tank behind him. This is the experience of being at a museum when you have a guide who knows his stuff! Thank you Mr. Willey and The Tank Museum!
The tank in the first film image is in fact an early model Panzer IV!
Excellent presentation. Hope Mr. Fletcher is doing well.

Well done, sir. I read your comment before I arrived at that moment in the video. Totally cracked me up when he then said it XD Well done.
Pz 3 tanks production was halted in 1943, but the tank soldiered on till the end. The Pz 3 N with its 75mm gun was used in mixed formations with the Tiger 1s as close support tanks. Any older models that returned to the factory for repair or refit were brought up to 'N' standard and reissued to the Hvy Tank companies . The German considered the Pz 3 to be the superior engineered vehicle to the Pz 4.
I remember reading in "The Arms of Krupp" that Germany had many of the designs of weapons (like the Panzer lll) already drawn up in the 20s.
Fantastic. Not the normal drummed down blurb that's put out. Great info and what a great example. Tank museum is best in the world period.
When ya Britts are truly unbiased, Ya do a great job...... Danke
Fantastic. Something TV documentaries lack nowadays - detailed and presented in interesting manner. Thanks.
My favorite WW2 tank. 5,774 built, twenty different variants, and the backbone of the Panzer divisions during the first half of the war. Problem: it was perpetually undergunned throughout its service life.
Best looking panzer in my mind
You are like the hicok of tanks, if I got his name right - amazing soothing calm voice talking in front of these engineering marvels... So beautiful !
I really like this longer chat about the tank; going more in depth in much appreciated.
These longer in-depth Tank Chats should be the norm.
Look how sexy this Panzerkampfwagen III looks 😮
Outstanding video and presentation
Yet another great tank introduction from The Tank Museum. So clearly explained with nice pieces of period film. Thanks for the video.
I've been absolutely addicted to these videos and this channel as of late. One of my favorite computer games is Company of Heroes, and one of the coolest things about it was the historical accuracy with the units! Way back when Medal of Honor Allied Assault came out, I first got really into WW2. Been interested ever since, and I think this (being a TANK MUSEUM TOUR GUIDE/Professor :) ) would be my #1 job of all time. Keep on tankin' on, and thanks for all the informative videos
I think one of the biggest advantages of having a frontal transmission or drive sprocket is that for the driver, it is a whole lot easier for him to shift a gearbox that he is sitting very close to than to, in the t-34 for example with a rear drive wheel, shift gears which are on the other side of the tank from you where the controls for those are much weightier, literally, and just harder to make do what you want basically
The best-produced video to come out of the Tank Museum yet, a delight to watch
This video goes a lot more into details about the presented tank than the previous videos. That is very nice and I hope we will see more long videos in the future.
The most informative Tank Chat yet... Well played Mr. David Willey.
Thanks so much for producing this kind of content - you provide wonderful information about the vehicles, their development, and their use (both intended and practical).
Thanks to David Willey. I like the longer videos.
Thank you so much for the excellent mini-documentary. This was high enough quality that perhaps the museum could think about a Patreon system for what you guys are producing. Between the shorter videos and ones of this magnitude, I'm sure a number of us would be willing to pitch in for the somewhat-regular content you guys provide.
These videos are absolutely first class. Well done !
These are truly amazing videos and extremely educational. Thank you for producing them.
Very interesting! I actually wrote my thesis on German-Russian cooperation on tanks in the interwar period. I came across a unique report from a German officer who went to the Kama tankschool in Kazan, who was one of the few students at the school who survived the war. If you guys at the Tank Museum are interested, I have a digitalized copy which would probably make a nice addition to your archive. Let me know! I'd be happy to send it to you.

I heard of a funny story involving the Kazan tank cooperation. The Germans brought over some of their test designs relatively late in the cooperative effort and the Soviet officers asked "where were the heavier tanks". The Germans said that those were the heaviest ones ready for production. Leaving the Soviets to think they were lying, but in fact it was the truth.
@TheNordhammer
7 жыл бұрын
@FedorovAvtomat The Soviets were a few years ahead of the Germans in terms of tank designs and the tactics & operational use of armored units. While the Soviets would reach for a universal tank-T-34 and Germans fell into splitting their tanks into the Pz III & Pz IV. And the Soviets would produce a heavy tank-KV-1 long before the Tiger I.

Great work Dave, probably your best video yet. Loved all the detail and the info.
Another great video from Bovington. Always enjoy the chats.
Thanks, I liked that this was a bit longer than most other tank chats!
The most Underrated German Tank. It was an excellent Tank,and when was fitted with the 50mm gun it was the backbone of the Whermacht Armored Divisions until 1942. It was Perfect for close support to Infantry. Its Chassis was so good that was used to made several Armored Vehicles,being the most Notable the StugIII the most Successfull Tank Destroyer of WW2.
Please make as much episodes as possible ! Always extremely interesting :)

@thomass1891

@yes I understand your enthusiasm towards German panzers i am myself a great enthusiast actually (I am German after all). However we can't deny the fact that the T34 had excellent armor for the time, which the standard German Pz-III had very much troubles penetrating. The standard 37mm anti-tank gun was totally useless against it. The short 50mm /42 gun couldn't penetrate the front at all, and the side only with special ammunition, which was always in short supply. So the early German tanks (such as the Pz III) had a very hard time knocking out the T34. The T34 on the other hand, had no problem killing German tanks. The dual-purpose 75mm gun could penetrate the front of the Panzer III at any combat distance. However, it is important to note that most German tank men were far better trained and had modern radios to communicate(which was essential in modern war) The 34 relied on primitive methods from WW1 without access to radios or the ability to conduct coordinated attacks (again, due to poor training) this unsurprisingly led to many more t 34's get destroyed despite the fact it was a superior tank, it proved that having good tactics and training was far more important. But, you are totally wrong in saying the T 34 as a tank was inferior to PZ 3, that's just pure nonsense, this led to the Germans making the Panther tank (which was indeed superior to T 34 i will say).

@music Interesting read, it interesting how the military doctrine of the red army which didn't rely on armour to the same amount that the german army did ultimately was more successful. Especially considering that nowadays a lot of people seem to agree that the tank is an obsolete weapon of war. The soviets seem to have to constantly battle the myth that they only won the war due to throwing millions of people at the technologically way more advanced german army.
Excellent as always, seen this tank a lot at the museum and in the arena in action
Wow! Was amazed of how informative this video was!
Very informative and well put-together with some extra background, thank you!
WOW. this guy can talk tanks! This video sent me down all kinds of Wikipedia rabbit holes. I am not living in England now, but I grew up in Devon, loving the tank museum and tank days!! Proper job.
An awesome information presentation. The historical perspective is a huge bonus.
Wonderful series. Adding to my knowledge and stoking my interest. Thank you
Excellent presentation. Beautiful Pz III. Nice background data. Thanks.
Love the tank talks and walk through of the pros and cons of the tanks ...,
Great stuff David - Thank You!!
Really loved this video, and really enjoyed the history behind the tank's development.
As always, an excellent series! Thanks
Excellent video.
The funny thing is, is that the Pnz3 was meant to be anti-tank, while the panzer 4 was anti-emplacement, be then the roles were switched XD

Sun_skimmer 89: yeah, they didn't expect the gun calibre to need to go up so fast! It jumps from 20mm autocannons on the II, to 50mm on late ausführung IIIs, to 75mm on IV and panther, and 88 on the Tiger. They just had to keep making the barrels longer too!
@RepairCat
7 жыл бұрын
Later in the war they put a long barreled 75mm L/48 gun on the Pz IV and converted the Pz IIIs to StuGs, also carrying those 75mm guns. I guess they couldn´t fit them into the Pz IIIs turret.

Ironheade yep, the turret ring wasn't big enough. I think the short barrel had a smaller breech so it could fit inside the ring?
@MadnerKami
7 жыл бұрын
@Ironheade That is exactly what happened. The turret-ring's size of the Pz IV was noticibly wider than that of the III, which allowed the Pz IV to be more easily adopted to later developments of the ever increasing gun-sizes.
David Willey, 16 minutes video of my favourite tank? Awesome!!

Panzer III for Tank Chat #33? I like it!
its so amazing where we can see on the early models we can see some features carried on to the tigers, panthers etc
Excellent videos, very well done. Can't wait for the StuGs!
Attractive tank. Love the proportions.

Much similar to M4 Sherman and T-34 which were also easy to produce and reliable and which lived through most of the war. Pz III and Iv as well as M4 and T-34 were also upgunned during their service life.
@flakpanzer_gepard

T-34 lived through the whole war not because it was so cool but because nobody wanted to change the industry to get used to a new model. there at least two attempts to improve T-34 during the war and one more before it. but all failed because of the idea to build shit but MOAR shit. Sherman was far more effective and reliable tank than the T-34

When you weigh up all the pros and cons, manpower and skill levels thereof, logistical difficulties, armour thickness, mobility, size and effectiveness of gun, and a thousand other variables, the T-34 was probably the best all round tank of the second world war if not ever.
My favourite WW2 German tank. Thanks for the video 👍
Excellent video. Very clear and interesting presentation. Thanks.

May be the most aesthetically pleasing tank ever built

Amazing documentary.
Excellent revue.Will be back at Bovington in December 17....from down under.
This is an incredibly interesting historical report. It changes much of that I thought I knew.
Thank you for another great video!
Great video.............again. Must get back to Bovington, last went as small boy. The KV1 was awesome, seemed huge then.
The Panzer III was in production for a long time really, considering it had limitations that became glaringly obvious when it came up against well crewed T-34's on the Eastern front. The III had numerous important upgrades during the war but by 1943, it badly needed replacing..... even though it performed very well in certain theatres up to that point. It's still an iconic tank of WW2 though, especially as a chassis for the SPG generation.
