Tank Chats #27 Light Tank Mark IIA | The Tank Museum
Tank Chats playlist • Tank Chats from The Ta... A British two-man light tank from the early thirties.
The first British light tank, the Mark I, evolved from the Carden-Loyd Carrier. The Mark II was produced in larger numbers and issued for service. Light tanks were regarded as an alternative to armoured cars with a better cross-country performance.

We Norwegians were so sure our declared Neutrality would hold that we didn't even call general mobilization until after our Capitol city Oslo was seized by the Germans... The German invasion was spotted by a whaling boat, which took up the fight with the german destroyers, but naturally lost. We did have training regiments training at a coastal fortress in the Oslo fjord though, and they were able to sink a german heavy cruiser, and delay the invasion a bit. But I don't think anyone were as badly prepared as us.
"in fact in those days when we were busy policing the Empire and generally creating havoc everywhere we only needed tanks with a single machine gun to shoot down the opposition, who were on foot" :D :D :D such details are often left out

Mr Fletcher is to polite to use such words, and probably he doesn´t even think in this way. He is, instead, a very british, cool and educated gentleman. But I suppose it´s better not to start trouble with these chaps. We Germans did and lost.

America and Canada were really the only countries that won WWII. They are the only country that ended up better and stronger post-war than they were before. Britain lost their colonies and went into a deep recession. France took a while to recover from occupation. The Soviets lost way too many men. Japan and Germany were totally destroyed and occupied.

David’s the absolute perfect choice to host these videos; his accent lends exactly the right feeling of Britishness to them, especially when he’s talking about British vehicles. I love his sense of humor too; being able to make wisecracks without changing one’s tone at all is a rare talent indeed. Oh, and his mustache is absolutely glorious.

Interesting archive footage. Seemed quite fast in the colour film. Also liked the photo with the dog sitting next to one. Good size comparison 😄

Always an honor to hear aout a vehicle at Bovington from Mr. Fletcher. If I ever get over there I feel like I'll have a better understanding of the museum and it's pieces because of these videos.
The photo at 2:33 ( three blokes watch C Sqn ) is exactly what so many people do when watching tanks... Stare in fascination at the running gear.
Thank you mr. Fletcher! One more great tank chat :) When I was a kid I was glued to the TV watching discovery channel "battlefield" and I always liked the "old guy" the most aka mr Fletcher :D
Mr. Fletcher is great, he makes the videos so much better in his own way!
'They were in use in the Desert in 1940, although they weren't any good.' - Considering its only opposition was the Italian 10th Army, I'd say that tank was just fine for that year.
I love this man, his delivery on the bit about Aussies using the tanks in Africa 😆
Thank you, sir. Always a pleasure to view your Tank Chats. Glad you are well.
When I was a kid I dreamed of having one if these tanks to drive out in the desert. Ever sense I saw The World at War episode The Desert.
fletcher is the best....he cracks me up sometimes😁😁😁😁

I like the horse in the background

Not much armour. It would probably be penetrated by a withering look.
It almost looks like a toy in the beginning, like a big pedal car or something. It's amazing to say that about 6 tons of hardened steel. I guess everything really is relative. Fantastic series Mr. Fletcher. Well done, sir
With a coat of blue paint David would be a perfect Papa Smurf for the Smurf movie.

I'm an Australian & I've still got a light tank infact just the other day me & my mate dingo cobber blue'e were using it as a golf buggy when the president of the golf club came running up to us complaining that we were diging up the fairways so i squeezed off a few bursts of the machine gun & he suddenly changed his mind so i can onestly say there a very handy bit of kit.
Actually a jolly nice little tank for its day.
Thank you Mr. Fletcher. I've seen pictures of these but never knew the story.
The Australians in the desert ww1 had five armoured cars extemporations each. Ten new modle T ford trucks arrived and were striped of even their bonets. A few bedboards made a deck which gave room for a Lewis gun and the second man. It worked.
Interwar tanks are my favorite
The Australians were always getting castoffs in the Desert Army. A long with these light tanks, they also took in a lot of captured Italian M13's after Beda Fomm. They stood up until they found themselves up again PzK 3 and 4's.
Great videos. This is the one and only best tank museum in the world. well done to all.
2 lads and a 6 banger
More videos with David, please!
Well done mr. fletcher
From across the pond this yank looks forward to each new video narrated by Mr. Fletcher. He has become the face of Great Britain to those of us interested in AFVs and serves his nation well. In the shadow of Churchill he reminds me of British pluck, when the island nation stood alone against the NAZI barbarism. Rule Britainia and God save the Queen!
Informative and love the dry British humor.
Finally saw this - fantastic!

GOOD to see thank you for the video.
Jolly good job old boy

Thank you .
Thank you mr fletcher! brilliant as always. Ive always had a love for the light tank class in general and these vickers light tanks in particular. wonder what would of happened if someone had the forethought to stick a autocannon in there like a qf1 but better, as good as a panzer 2. Turret probably too small though i guess.
3.00 " Good dog,you fetched this thing. Now we can throw it on the enemy again and you fetch him again." That was the way, military dogs had been trained before tank tactics advanced.
Wonderful
The tanks are very well interesting, but that's the most amazing mustache I've ever seen.
The British seem to have spent an enormous amount of energy and resources on tanks, armoured cars and other paraphernalia that proved to be absolutely useless. But, despite all of this they triumphed. I really enjoy David Fletcher's honest and at times quite funny comments.
Could be a good little unit for zipping down to the local shops, perhaps not quite big enough to intimidate the Trak Tractor set particularly on the school run [think soccer mums in large 4 x 4 SUV's], might have to find a suitable APC instead.
Great!
This looks like a terrific go-anywhere, run all day vehicle for reconnaissance. Just stay out of the range of the enemy. 25 HP engine means that you don't burn up a lot of fuel
Thanks.

Thank you Mr. Fletcher. These videos are excellent. You mentioned that the tracks were manganese steel. Was this the same steel used for the track segments for the Universal (Bren) Carrier? I'm poking away at a '42 Mk1*. Just curious. Cheers!
David can you do a video on the French saint chamond? or Jagpanzer

A 'reasonably accurate' reproduction of unhardened plate wouldn't be terribly expensive to produce if you had access to a proper shop, and were able to team up with a group like the Tank Museum to take accurate reverse engineering measurements from things. Might even be able to make a tidy profit off something like that really if you build a few copies of various lighter tanks. Rent them out for movie production and such.
Nice video, thanks TTM, one query though, albeit strange; the tank commanders going past the lady on 50 mile marker, got an eye full at 2:51
Footage of Light tank II a with crew (left) and commander far right 3:00.
Good tank:)
America: our military has raised more hell than anybody Britain: hold my colonies
"queered their own pitch" lol I'd never heard that before.
Interesting video but I had to rewatch it because I was wondering what the hell is that metal horse was in the background
I love the photo that shows this thing being dwarfed by a dog.
Why is there a sort of skeleton/robo horse in the background? Two of them, in fact. I cant stop looking at them, now that I have noticed them
The turret seems especially large considering the turret ring. I’d pop the turret off and replace with a Browning M2s or Breda 20mm If I were an Australian in the desert.
interesting, the weakest tank have a more proper driving setup than most of other british tanks.. sprocket at the front!!
"They completely queered their own pitch"...my ribs!
I'd love it if this man were my grand-father. :-)
Oh bloody hell it looks like Herman Goering’s willy!
Can't wait until this whole bloody Covid-19 is finally over for good, so I can come and pay visit to you all. (Man, how come your train tickets are so damn expensive?)
3:50 Is that a Straussler designed pontoon attached to this tank?
Cemented means that the surface of the metal has more carbon than the middle.
why is nobody talking about the horse in the background?
Hey, where is his sweater?
YEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
I hope to God I can create something like this in my old age.
Battlefield 1 has 3 tanks available from 1917-1918, the Mark IV, the German A7V Sturmpanzerwagen and the French Renault FT17, I was wondering, were there any other tanks put into service during those couple of years ?
@insovietrussiavodka
7 жыл бұрын
I think there were still tons of armored cars around. , The first couple of SPGs if I am not mistaking. The Battlefield was filled with prototypes as well but thise tanks did see service. -Char Saint Chamond featuring a 75mm gun (1917-400 made) -Schneider CA-1 was possibly faced out sinse they were made in 1916. -Mark IX (APC) -Mark V with 1 man driving rather then 4 -Whippet tanks -Medium tank Mark A and B Many prototypes were also made in 1919 such as FIAT 2000 If those tanks are not in your game... Then it is really just a typical spin off and you might as well stick with NecroVision from 2009.
is that the same bottom half as a bren carrier?
Mechanical horse in background??
Without the turret removed, this would look a lot like a Panzer I, am I right?
The British Empire brought peace, security and stability everywhere surely?
Is it me or is David always wearing bullet proof gear under his shirt?
british pz 1 i suppose!
whats your opinion on the Vicker's 6-ton light tank?
Yes, but what about that robot horse behind you?
