Tanju Tuzer | Tribute

An accomplished professional dancer on the international stage, and one of classical ballet’s greatest ambassadors, Tanju Tuzer was a true artist. The art form flourished in his hands. As a man, he was a craftsman, an avid fisherman, a gardener and a beekeeper. To his core, he was an adventurer and a lover of the human spirit.
As an artistic director and teacher, he was maestro, a brilliant oracle of dance who had a passion for connecting the body to the soul while teaching students, whom he loved dearly. In these young minds, he cultivated tenacity and discipline. Through his commitment, he imbued generations of lives with his strong character. He taught that the true magic of dance was not found in powerful jumps or turns, but in the ability to transcend the mundane and take the audience into a higher, ethereal plane.
Tanju, you have influenced and inspired so many. We miss you dearly but your spirit lives in our hearts. Your voice echos throughout the school and your passion lives on through us.

I could write a page about Tanju Tuzer, but I’ll just keep it short: It was an honor and a privilege to know this man.

I danced with Tuzer Ballet in the mid 1980's. Both Tanju and Pat were such wonderful instructors. Tanju had a way of making every one of us in the company feel valued and beautiful. He saw us as individuals and valued each of our strengths. His unique gift was weaving together our strengths to create such beautiful corps work as well as pas de deux pieces and solo work. I will never forget our venture into some of his personal choreography and how much fun it was dancing A Night in the Tropics. I am so sad to learn of his passing, but take so much joy in knowing that he continued sharing his art and passion for so long. (Love to Jennifer, Ben, Anne, Kedra, Shana, and Kristi, Christy & Lisa. Hope you all are doing well. - Amy)

I first met Tanju and Pat around the summer of 1978, when Tanju was teaching for Bill Martin-Viscount. In 1979, I moved to Dallas to study with Tanju. He had me take a two hour ballet class in the morning followed by classes from 4 to 10 finishing off with an intense aerobic workout. He had me stand where I could not see the mirror. He said," I want you to feel the correction and the position!". He contoured my training to maximize my strengths while strengthening my weaknesses. I never felt as in shape and prepared to dance as when I studied with Tanju. My petit allegro became very fast and clean under his tutelage as he referred to me as his "dancing flea". I joined Compania Nacional de Danza within a year of training with him promoted to soloist roles with a few weeks. Both he and Pat made a big impact on my life and career. He was an artist with a strong support from his lovely wife Pat.
