Anybody else have any of the other Tamron primes?

I have the Tamron 24 2.8. It is a very good lens, perhaps my most favorite lens now. But things can change if I get a 35mm.

I own the 35mm and the 24mm and I'm happy also because I can use the same filter and they are very light.
This lens is mostly seen very critical and, of course, mostly with reference to its focus motor performance and noise. These aspects are indeed not ideal or comfortable, however you should not forget to consider its strengths: 1) Its IQ is SUPERB. No compromises here, not at all. 2) Very close MFD > closer than any other 35mm. See other lenses that can focus up close, these are not the fastest at focus, too. 3) Very good form factor: right on the edge between too small and too big. Very handy, good grip. Innovative lens hood, adding no size or length to your lens. 4) Focus for photos is reliable. It is noisy, but it isn’t as slow as in Sony’s 50/1.8 and doesn’t let you down until it gets really dark. This happens with more expensive gear, too, and can be fixed manually. 5) Rubber gasket for weather sealing is really massive and trustworthy, unlike the ones on Sony and Samyang lenses. The main point of criticism is AF for video. It is noisy, and the worse aspect: it tends to micro-adjust all the time, resulting in an image that is shifting the whole time (at least it feels like that). Solution: MF. Not as convenient, but what do people expect? This is a 180€ lens that weighs 210g. It cannot be small, light and perfect all in one. You can turn this and ask people with 35/1.4 GM why they spend 1600€ on a lens that suffers from some of the worst focus breathing I have seen in more recent times (same for the 50 GMs). This 35/2.8 is a gem that you have to make proper use of. Every lens DOES have a weak spot, it is up to its owner to draw the line in which area he/she can live with that.
Another great review with humor hahaha. Nice job. Happy new year Chris!

You are full of surprises, Chris! I never would have thought of you actually buying another Tamron lens, haha! I can't think of a reason for me to pick this one up as I already have a good used copy of the Sony /Zeiss 35 f2.8 which now can be purchased on Henry's website in a "good used state": for almost the same poutine $$ as the new Tamron. Thanks Tamron , you have forced the prices to drop! It only weighs in at a mere 120gr. making your Tammy quite a beefy girl by comparison. Auto focus on it is extremely snappy and silent and it is sharp. It also has the same integral hood design with a rectangular opening - quite cute! The construction is metal and it is made in Japan for those who care. One downside is that it does not have a close minimum distance so no interesting macro -like shots. Although, I don't mind the build quality on the Tamron zooms for Sony, I find these new primes a bit ugly looking ( too "stubby") but they are certainly a welcome addition as affordable and small lenses for Sony interchangeable lens cameras. It must hurt you to use this lens, though knowing what the 24 GM can produce! Happy New Year Chris!

Could have sworn I replied to this already but I guess I didn't!! Glad to see someone else utilizing poutine dollars haha.
I enjoyed this video and i'm getting this lens for photoshoots and i am seeing it as a nice challenge to learn how to work my way around the AF, so that i can still use it for videos. I love the lens for the price it has!
Hi, do you suggest this on an "old" Sony A7II? It looks like a perfect lens for me (travel, trekking, climbing) due to its lightweight and optical performance.. but I've read some reviews talking about slow AF... Actually I have a 24-70 F4, can this Tamron AF be compared with my actual lens, or is it really slower? I'm wondering to buy this the new Sigma 35mm F2, or the Sony 35mm F 1.8.. I would love the Tamron for the 2:1 magnification ratio, the price (I will use it during trekking session, or Bike Travelling, so a small and cheap lens is best) and for the complete tropicalization.. I'm only a bit boubtful for the AF.. (I will use it for stills at 90%)
Just got me the Sony 24mm f1.4......oh dear lord,what a bit of kit....😍😍

Great video! Would you recommend me getting this lens for $300 CAD or the Samyang 35mm f/1.8 for $400 CAD -- for my Sony a7iii ? This tamron looks so sharp and I don't mind 2.8 but the autofocus looks really slow. Appreciate any feedback
Great video! I wonder if the auto focus reliability issue can be addressed with firmware update. It’s not as bad as 28-75 when that first came out but this is still bad. Also the sound uhhhhh

i dont think so, it sounds and feels like a cheap/older AF system
Hi Chris, is the AF good for stills in low light?
Focus by wire still moves physical lens elements. The difference is that there is no direct mechanical connection between the focus ring and the lens elements that move.
Awesome review👐🏽👐🏽 it’s 199.00 now

Would you recommend any other lens for the price now in 2022 ? And is this lens good for photography I mostly see comments saying about video but me being a car photographer would this be good ?
I've just bought one to use on my Sony ZV-E10. I also have the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN, which would you keep and why?
When you used the monopod as a selfie stick you were tiny on the screen. Seems to me you proved that the lens would be perfect for vlogging with that sequence.
I hope Tamron is coming with a Version II of this lens with way better AF. Because apart from the AF it's a pretty great lens.
Between this one and the Samyang, which do you prefer?
Hello Cris ! One question, what do you think is the best option for portraiture and family sessions or events? sigma 30mm 1.4 or tanrom 35mm 2.8? Thanks for the answer and greetings from Costa Rica

from where?
I wonder with lenses like this if they speed up the focus motor but then it over-shoots, so the camera has to correct, thus a hunting occurs. as opposed to some other lenses that don't over shoot but might be a bit slow. Obviously, while sony made lenses, including sony zeiss lenses, are nearly perfectly calibrated.

0ooTheMAXXoo0 There’s no doubting the image quality. Comments about noise are merely out of curiosity, not being an owner of the lens. In the end, glad there are cheaper alternatives to the high end options.

how was your experience with this lens so far? here in london is one seller selling box (brand new only opened) lens for only 240 pounds. @chrisbrockhurst
4 жыл бұрын
I like it for what it is. A basic 35mm. AF is slow for video but thats my only gripe
I have the tamron 24/2.8 - very sharp - very versatile with macro range - ergonomic - heavy barrel distortion easily correctable - af sound stopped bothering me after a day of use. For stills AF is for the most partvery accurate - evenfor macro. Detail on sony a7r4 is excellent and no other 24mm gives this kind of MFD. Used it in the national museum in new Delhi yesterday & could do extreme close ups - several ft high sculpture & wide images with excellent detail at 1000 iso. For the 24 focal length I do not need a faster lens but one that gives more resolving detail and macro flexibility. DMF works well too

Hello Chris great video. I'm doing some real estate videos and photos, I have a Sony A7III, and I would like to know your opinion about the alliance for this kind of works. If you tried the laowa 12mm zero D? Hello @@chrisbrockhurst . I was searching through Amazon and other marketplaces and I couldn't found this lens is it for Sony? Is it a crop lens?
@rodrigosilva-hu9hv
4 жыл бұрын
Well 12 mm is a nicely wide full frame format, if sigma can handle the distortion nicely, lets see. I currently have a 12 mm it is crop sensor, and it distorts a lot! If I don't place the camera on the right places some cases I can't use the fotos even after Lightroom corrections. And it does chromatic aberration in some light conditions :( Thats why I mentioned the Laowa, been see some critics about it, despite the price, if does the job right, since I dot a lot of Real Estate, it Will pay of. But if this sigma proves to be better, its a brand I know and relly so would go to Sigma instead. Will wait for your review Chris, my best regards
I have the A7iii, the tamron FE 17-28 mm, Sigma APSC 30mm and 16 mm, but i am looking for a good 35 mm Prime. Which would you recommend better for mostly street photography (and casual friends' portraits): This Tamron, new Sony 35 1.8, or the Sigma 1.4?
@chrisbrockhurst
4 жыл бұрын
probably the sigma
I am looking for a 35 prime lens and I am between this one and Samyang AF 35 f1.4. Tamron is cheaper, lighter and focuses very close, Samyang costs more, is heavier, but is 1.4 and has a better bokeh. Any suggestion?
I'm looking for a light weight macro lens. The recommended 90-105mm are too heavy for me. Could this one do the job or can you recommend something else. Thanks

The lens hood is shaped like that to properly shade the small front element but large "housing" of the lens. If it we're just a large ring like what we consider normal it wouldn't be able to properly shade the glass.

@stevemulcahy5014
4 жыл бұрын
I went with the 50mm as it was much cheaper (but also available) when I got my a7iii, and when I used my G85 and 25mm, was really happy with that 50mm focal length. So far, the 50mm hasn’t had any slow or missed AF issues for me, but it is a bit on the noisy side. I then rented a Tamron 17-28 over Christmas, and it was amazing. Even at f2.8 rather than F1.8, it gave some nice bokeh and low light performance was there still too. I used it exclusively at Beaulieu car museum and loved the results. The AF was great and it was neigh on silent. If this lens had the 17-28’s AF, I’d consider jumping on it rather than the 50mm, but I’d rather putting the extra $200 away for the 28-75 or sigma’s 24-70 instead...
Was half interested in this lens until i seen the DP review and how poor the auto focus is. The size for a 2.8 35mm is enormous. I went for the Samyang pancake 35mm 2.8 used, very sharp and good auto focus. £399 is too much for a 2.8. The close focus is good but i don't think Tamron have done anything groundbreaking with these primes unfortunately.
