Tamiya Aqroshot DT-03 speed comparison runs

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A few months ago I bought what was advertised as a GoolRC 4300KV #S3650 sensorless brushless motor and 60A ESC combo. Which I was going to put in my original Tamiya TA-02 AMG Mercedes touring car to have some fun trying to drift it. But when I swapped it and took it for a test run it looked slower than the 20mph of the Absima brushed motor. So I took it out and shelved it thanking the lords it had only cost 25GBP and kind of forgot about it until I got my new Tamiya Aqroshot DT-03 #58610 and decided I would test it against the stock torque tuned brushed motor with my GPS speed meter. This video is the result. See what you think!
There are three runs in total
First run. The stock 25T brushed Torque tuned motor
Second run. Brushless motor wired matching colours to the ESC
Third run. Brushless motor with two wires swapped to the ESC
All three runs used the same 17 tooth pinion gear and 3300mAh NiMH battery
Many thanks to my mate Mark for videoing, some driving and co-hosting.
Hope you enjoy it.

Great work rob, the only thing I don't like about this is that I don't have one. These Tamiya beasts are great fun. The wife just bought a Castle 5700 kv by accident she says right after she bought a kyosho dodge challenger. The drive shaft explodes in them so she better order an alloy drive shaft. Put her Camaro on brushless and the drive shaft became a skipping rope! Ha,ha,

It is a very cool buggy but bleeding useless off road with those road tyres on but I think there are plenty of off road tyres that fit. OMG 5700 I don't think I would dear put it in anything myself lol. Ahh I remember drive shafts so thin and bendy they would look like skipping ropes even with a stock silver can hehehe. Many thanks and all the best you and your wife mate.

Thanks Charlie. Admittedly with the stock tyres on and Torque tuned motor it was a lot of fun on the tarmac anyway, on grass the wheels just spin and you are lucky to get it up to 5mph lol. I'm going to swap the motor to the 10.5T that is in my Wild One to see if I can get it over 30mph. Thanks for watching and your continued support my friend.

Well mate - that was a blast! The Dt-03 is a great handling RC and I need to get one too! Although the wheelie was a bit of a fluke, it was great to catch it on camera! Always fun running the cars with you, let's do more soon! :))

Hay Mark. I still can't get over we caught it on camera (not like us at all lol). I dread to think what the handling would be like if I could fit those wheels and tyres onto my Wild One!!!! But now she has those ground assault tyres on I'm hoping it will be as good as my racing fighter on the dirt. Think we need to get them both on track?

Hi Nikki. The wheelie was a pure accident, one of those moments where you don't normally catch it on video lol. It only managed it because it hit the curb. We did try a couple of times after but no luck. Due to how stable it looked I am planning on swapping the motor with the one in my Wild One and putting in a 19T pinion to see if I can break 30mph on NiMH batteries lol. Since I got the GPS meter my mate Mark and I have been trying to get at least one car to 30 without success. I will hopefully be doing more with the Aqroshot, if the rain ever stops lol. Thanks for watching and your very kind words Nikki

That was very interesting Rob. I use steel 19t pinions in mt DT-0's which give the torque tuned a bit more speed. I haven't got anything to measure how fast they actually go, but fast enough for me. It's not the first time I have seen brushless not making a big difference in some RC's.

Hi Derek. Yes just got a 19T steel pinion to fit. I have to say I don't think this motor is 4300KV. After it's pathetic performance in my AMG I did some research on T' web and found a guy who analysed the same motor and he only got a max rpm of 20000ish and after taking it apart and upgrading bearings and other things only got 25000rpm. So I think it may be a fake one branded as GoolRC. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend mate.

Good runs Rob!!! 😎👏👏👏👏👏 Makes sense, if the ESC was reversed, you'll only get about 75-80% Throttle in Reverse - which you were running as forward.... Did that make ANY sense?? 😱 Anyway it did make a difference, cool runs! The Wheelies were EPIC!! Carmine 🚂 🚙

  • @robbrennanrc

Hello Carmine. Thanks man. Yes it did but I'm still trying to get my head around why I had to then reverse the throttle on the transmitter lol. Unfortunately that was the only one and it only did it due to how it hit the curb. the tyres have so little grip there no way it would wheelie without assistance, but when I swap the tyres for the ground assault dirt tyres and swap the motor for my 10.5T it may well make it a good wheelie machine and hopefully a bit faster. Thanks for watching and have a great Sunday mate.

.... Because when you swapped the two wires on the Motor, you regained maximum Speed, according to the ESC.... But then your Transmitter, still wanted to run the same direction as before - but you REVERSED the Buggy itself! 😱 It took me a LONG time to get that concept.... A 10.5 and decent Tyres.... AND an 8-Cell NiMH, should net you some impressive Speeds!!! 😊😉

Pyrex is fire proof but I have seem them explode if they get too hot dude,. In all seriousness if you are talking about Lipo I would highly recommend a fireproof metal box after seeing how easily they can catch fire on the program Mythbusters Juniors. Hi Rob! Nice test! Very interesting. Reversing it made a difference, but I’m still wondering if it’s a 4300 KV? I can get my DT’s to about 35 kph with the torque tuned, a 19T pinion, ball bearings and buggy sized tires (Neo Fighter). And I think about 45 kph with a 3500 KV, a 17T pinion, ball bearings and buggy tires (Sand Viper). But nontheless 40 kph is plenty for the DT’s with a 17T pinion (in my opinion) so the motor seems to do the job ☺️

  • @robbrennanrc

Hello Mikael. Yes I just told Derek I think it is a fake branded GoolRC hence the really cheap price. But with swapping a couple of wires I got an extra 8kph using a partially discharged battery so could get a bit more on a fully charged one. So at the end of the day I was relieved that I hadn't wasted my money. I just got a 19T pinion for it to have another go. Both Mark and I are still trying to get one of our cars up to or over 30mph/48kph on NiMH lol one day maybe. I am thinking of swapping this motor for the 10.5T one in my Wild One as it's just too fast for me in the Wild One with it's twitchy steering and with the 19T pinion I might just make it over 30mph. Thanks for watching and have great weekend mate.

Hi Gaz! I recommend you always discharge NiMh and NiCad batteries after every run - and never store them with any charge left. I have a NiCad from 1990 and it still performs as well as my new batteries! Always run as soon as soon they are fully charged to get the best out of them, run them flat and you will have many years use out of them! All the best from Mark... :))

Hi Rob. Nice speed test vid. Interesting about swapping the wires. Don't really get that other than it might have actually been in it's reverse mode which is not always 100%. I haven't really used brushless with nimh batts but I'd have thought you might get a few more mph. 25mph ain't bad though. I had a 4300kv goolrc set in my Blitzer Beetle and although I didn't have a GPS to test the speed at the time it was mentally quick. You could probably up the gearing. Not sure if I mentioned it in my Aqroshot vid but I have put in a 19t pinion and obviously the big wheels. I would have thought you'd get 30mph out of yours as it's a very light car. Are you against getting into lipo batteries? Obviously learn from my experience and keep them and charge them in a metal box if you do! They do have a load of punch compared to nimh. Here is one of the vids I did of the Blitzer with the 4300kv Goolrc set - kzread.info/dash/bejne/m5N6pK2sZsKxdLQ.html

Hi Pete. Me neither mate. I have a 19T pinion to go in it and to be honest the third run was on the same battery as the second so was probably almost half discharged so a fresh bat would possibly have given it an extra mile or two per hour. So for the next run it will have full bat and 19T pinion and if that doesn't get me to 30mph then out will come the big road wheels, the same as Mark has used. Initially I was considering Lipo, but got really confused about all the different specs (mainly the C number?) and couldn't work out which would be OK with the TBLE-02. Then you had your accident (hope you are all sorted now mate?) and then what finally made my mind up to steer was seeing an episode of Mythbusters Juniors where they tested the myth 'Can a Lithium battery cause a catastrophic fire in a bin lorry' and it was really scary how easily Lipo's could be made to catch fire. Oh yeah also watched a Drone Racing program where they have to pit to swap batteries and in one all the guy did was plug the battery in and it burst into flames almost in his hands. So to answer your question yes absolutely against having them anywhere near my home or cars. Just watched and commented on both videos as you will have already seen. Great stuff mate and thank you for your continued support Pete it really means a lot to me.

@@robbrennanrc Yes a 19t pinion, bigger wheels and fresh battery ought to do the trick. I do understand why you wouldn't go with lipo, especially after my disaster. I feel that my new regime which involves charging them in a fire proof bag in a fire proof box on the concrete floor of the garage should be safe. Also I don't put them in the RC's till I've got to where I'm going and I carry them in the metal box. Anyway hopefully all this precaution won't be necessary and none of them will go up! Keep up the good work with the vids 😀

@@robbrennanrc Hi Rob, I found it hard like you to change over to lipos. But once I changed, I'll never use NiMH again . . . due to the much better power to weight ratio. Lipos are much lighter and much more powerful. Basically, Lipo batteries used to be dangerous before the modern smart chargers were invented, because if you overcharge them they catch fire, and that's what used to happen - overcharging. But once you know what you're doing and have a good smart charger which has all the safety features, then they're safe. And never leave them unattended while charging, that's the trick. After use, you have to put them back on a storage voltage (around 40% of full charge) which is approx. 3.82V per cell. And I store mine in the oven for safety. Never had an issue in 4 years I've been using them. I sleep with peace of mind because all my Lipos are stored in the kitchen oven which is the safest place should one of them catch fire. Cheers!
