Taming the Monkey Mind with Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo (filmed at KMSPKS Singapore)

Tibetan Buddhist nun Venerable Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo shares basic Meditation techniques to calm the mind and to focus better. She also shares how you can transform your life into an ongoing Dharma practice through cultivating qualities such as Mindfulness, Patience, Generosity, Compassion and a good heart towards all.
Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo (born 1943) is a bhikṣuṇī in the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. She is an author, teacher and founder of the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in Himachal Pradesh, India. She is best known for being one of the very few Western yoginis trained in the East, having spent twelve years living in a remote cave in the Himalayas, three of those years in strict meditation retreat.
Vicki Mackenzie, who wrote Cave in the Snow about her, relates that what inspired the writing of the book was reading Tenzin Palmo's statement to a Buddhist magazine that "I have made a vow to attain Enlightenment in the female form - no matter how many lifetimes it takes".
Filmed at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery in Singapore on 11th January 2020.

Tenzin Palmo saved my life from total underground. She was the one who taught me what love is and that people do wrong when they confuse love with attachment/addiction. When I saw her first time, I suddenly knew that Buddhism is the godforce (holy spirit / aether). Believing in Buddha way = living with love = godforce

Thank you Venerable for your enlightening sharing! I learn that in wishing all others well and be happy, I do not impose on them what I deem to be signs of happiness or behaviors that they should exhibit. Such as when I smile at others, if they do not wish to smile back; let it be. I will just wish them all Well and Be Happy. And to remember that when there are people around us (our aging parents or siblings; family) who don't say what we want them to say, do what we want them to do...these are our opportunities where we can really practice and cultivate the important qualities to fulfill our human potentials. Cultivating kindfulness, mindfulness, awareness, patience, gratitude and compassion. Om Mani Padme Hum

36:33 -> very very important and useful step in our spiritual lives, because normally we are so identified with our thoughts and feelings... So the ability to step back and observe our thoughts and feelings... as not me and mine. (First must have clear awareness of breathing, can't skip a step). We are not our monkey mind, if we were-we could not step out and observe the mind stream means we are not the mind stream - there are more levels beyond the conceptual. Normally we are so immersed in thinking we don't know there is space there - other parts not immersed in thought. 3 times an hour -> what is the mind doing at this time? Be aware of what state the mind is in at this time.

It's an interesting perspective. In the Vedic tradition as Prashant Trivedi teaches a different perspective: First is to train our human body as our human body is slower than our mind, so it's easier to control. We train our human body thru centering/meditating. Once our body is centered, our mind will be more balanced and when both our body and mind are functioning better they both are in alignment with the spirit. He called this being coherent. As far as job goes, he said, our main job on this earth plan is to control our body.

Enjoying the state of happiness is as worst as a thing of suffering in the misery therefore that must also be left behind and maintain neutralness. That means be in the state of mind in between of being unhappy and being happy or content or confident or satisfied or fulfilled. Just like a vehicle at neutral gear and is poised free from going reverse or forward.

Very educative. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

the most effective meditation method for taming monkey mind is an ancient Chinese method called standing still, its an open eyed meditation done stood upright in comfortable position,i tell you this with ten minutes a day just listening to the breath using this method, taming of the mind is absolutely guaranteed in a very short space of time, the mind centers,it breaks the past/future time continuum of the mind,it is that which pulls a person in two, this method wins the battle of the klishes very easily, theres an easier method find a buddah, his company will do this for you

Instead, look at them without judgment And then on the other hand: 2. (Some of the) thoughts from the monkey mind are "stupid" If she's saying the thoughts are stupid, then this isn't non-judgment

@@jiminy_cricket777 I see, maybe she spoke of it in such a manner for the sake of presentation. I would simply recommend keeping an open heart and non judgemental ease whilst you meditate. If you wander off in thought, just breathe and come back to your awareness. Slowly, it will become easier. Thank you.

I think the problem she is addressing is that the mind is easily distracted and influenced (polluted) by everything experienced by our senses, as well as the beliefs and cultural behaviors we naturally adopt in the society in which we are raised. Thus, we do often have "stupid" thoughts. The trick is to be aware of (not banish) those thoughts. The result is that we 'train the monkey mind' to observe and recognise the thoughts that might cause us to react in ways that are not beneficial or benevolent.

I met this woman, didn't know who she was but as she looked familiar I enthusiastically and respectfully asked if she lived at a temple I visited in London. She said no, somewhat puzzled I began to ask where she was based, when she arrogantly dismissed me, as though shooing me away, saying I can't talk I have to go. I didn't act like I was minding my own business going to my car and she came in front of me about to get into her chauffeur driven car. My point is that whilst they put on piety when in an audience with the Dalai Lama or fake wisdom on camera. If you encounter them in person they are worse than ordinary people, who would generally give you the time of day. These supposed religious people have more vices than the rest of us, and gargantuan egos. This happened at a small celebration of select people for the Dalai Lama's birthday. Hence people truly involved with Buddhism, not some random people. People find your own way, don't listen to these charlatans in robes because they're in it only for themselves and will not help you. Once a fishmongers daughter always a....

So just because she didn't treat you the way you thought she should you think she is a charlatan? You clearly had a preconceived idea of how monastics should behave. Take good a look at yourself.

Your holiness. You are a Nun. We all know the first Nun to be ordained by the Buddha was Prajapati Gautami. The Lichavies of Vaishally got together and donated money to make the new living quarters for the newly ordained Nuns. So the structure which the Lichavies made will be the first NUNNERY IN THE WORLD. You are a Nun. Don't you think it is important that the world, especially the world of NUNS be interested in locating the exact spot where that NUNNERY once stood. I have found it. It is within Amrapali's compound, and the compound is huge. Won't you be interested in showing the world where that NUNNERY stood. Doesn't Maha Prajapati Gautami, Amrapali, and the 500 Nuns that were ordained by the Buddha, deserve recognition of that sort from the world. Doesn't the world deserve to know where that Nunnery is. I am an ordinary unknown researcher. I don't have the power to take it to the world. You have the power and popularity. Buddhists listen to you. Just by visiting the spot, that ancient nunnery will come alive.
