Re. "second language is Spanish"...no such thing! Our official language is English, but the first language most Jamaicans learn is actually Patois (pronounced Patwa). Unless he/she belongs to a family that has Spanish (Hispanic/Latin) heritage, a Jamaican child usually learns Spanish at school. For most of us, foreign languages are learned at high school, but kids who attend prep/private schools may learn them earlier. So, to recap...Jamaicans don't speak Spanish as a second language!

oh dear god!! Please, Please Please. If you dont know anything about Jamaica, PLEASE DONT MISREPRESENT US. Our official language is English, definately not Spanish. Most Jamaicans speak Patwa and i think that this is our first language. Patwa is the language that comes naturally for about 95% of the population. Even when we speak english there is an element of patwa mixed in with it. Some people say that our official language is "Standard Jamaican English".

Michele Matthews I usually read the comments before i actually watch the clip. Someone in the comment section was being "all knowing" about Jamaica. I just got a bit pissed. lol. Since Tess has been in The Voice there are alot of people stating "bullshit" and others who only know Jamaica through the internet believe the "bullshits". Just wanted to set the record strait a little.

There is a lot of debate going on in Jamaica now about the official and second languages of the country. The official language is English, but given that most of the people speak Patois/Patwa as their first received language, the academics want English taught as a second language. The politicians, who keep an eye on our economic integration into the hemisphere, want us to declare Spanish as the official second language since two-thirds of the Western Hemisphere speaks Spanish and for economic survival we'd better get with the programme. It is ironic that both the academics and the politicians converge on the fact that whatever we do, we can't move forward with most of the people knowing only Patois.
