The reason why this may sound odd to Trinis is that this fails to represent the spontaneity and “extempo” qualities of traditional Tamboo Bamboo or other Trini music. We don’t hear the distinct bass fuller and cutter which often become second nature - even to school children beating desks and playing bottle and spoon. And frankly, these replicated instruments produce a different timbre than Trini Bamboo. That being said, I disagree that this is cultural appropriation. These talented students haven’t been going to school to learn how to play the bamboo. And to call them rubbish or to mock their interpretations not only conveys ethnocentrism but also works to dissuade future interests in learning and understanding other cultures. I would challenge anyone to pick up one of these student’s instruments and step on stage to perform in an ensemble having never heard or seen it before. Don’t get me wrong, I get very sensitive and defensive when people appropriate or poke fun at aspects of other cultures - but let’s be considerate when we’re dumping out the bath water.
