Talking Watches With Roger Smith

Ғылым және технология

Today we're delighted to have with us one of the most respected figures in watchmaking: Mr. Roger Smith, who among many accomplishments, worked for many years with Dr. George Daniels, the inventor of the co-axial escapement. Roger continues Dr. Daniels' work today from his own atelier on the Isle of Man, where he makes about 10 watches per year to his own exacting standards. His goal, as he tells it, is to create a modern watch, but hand-made, and using traditional watchmaking methods, which advances the art and science of mechanical horology rather than relying on solutions discovered in the past. In his view, watchmaking is at its most interesting when, rather than depending on known quantities (such as the lever escapement), it probes its own boundaries, always seeking real improvements in precision and reliability as well - as you'll hear.

What a brilliant video. What a brilliant talent. And as an owner of a 1991 Sub and a 36mm Explorer, I am so glad to hear what the Maestro had to say about the quality of Rolex's movements.

I’m certainly glad that this gentleman endorsed Rolex. He basically said what I’ve been thinking about their movements: “Why reinvent the wheel?” Improving upon what works is more than sufficient. And his daily watch is an Explorer! Excellent interview - more like this would be greatly appreciated.

This is my favourite TW to date. We need more of these types of interesting interviews. Forget the so called sports stars or TV celebrities that have more money than taste, we want people with a genuine deep rooted interest in watches!

I fully appreciate what Roger Smith said at 5:46 about the escape wheel missing the jewel. For educational purposes, I made a few wooden models of the coaxial escapement and the duration of the two pushing actions on the relevant pallets, one directly on to the balance wheel and the other through the lever from the central coaxial inner wheel, the relative duration on each of them depends on the radius of the pallet on the balance wheel. The larger the diameter of the pallet on the balance wheel, the shorter the duration of the other. I made the diameter of the pallet on the balance wheel consecutively smaller and the ratio of the duration of push on both pushing pallets changes considerably. The Audemars Piguet escapement uses only one push directly on the pallet on the balance wheel which has a small diameter and that is rather easy to design and make. The coaxial escapement is very very tricky as what one gain on one pushing pallet, is lost on the other pushing pallet. Accuracy and precision are of utmost importance as getting two pushes out of that geometry have a natural mathematical limit relation that one cannot avoid. George Daniels must have looked and looked for hours on end at the Piguet single push escapement to realize that he could get another push from the escapement wheel through the lever and not directly to the pallet on the balance wheel. That must have been a moment of jubilation until he worked out the geometry only to find that he just can get away with it. I tried to work out the optimum conditions required to maximize the overlap on both pushing pallets so that one need not work with great precision, but as yet I have not succeeded, in finding the radius of the pallet on the balance wheel.

Sean Lynch Well said! Many collectors don’t seem that interested or at least very knowledgeable about the technical intricacies of watches as much as aesthetics (important though this is) the prestige of the brand and the investment value. So refreshing to have Roger Smith on who is one of only a handful of truly complete watchmakers in the world, and obviously on a completely different planet to any collector when it comes to understanding how watches are put together and work.

Yup! It's the difference between a multi-millionaire who collects rare and expensive Stradivarius violins, who knows the entire history and provenance of every instrument in their collection, but can't play a C major scale on one, and couldn't explain why the violin maker made the choices he did in . As opposed to a collector who's a master violin maker and who also happens to be an excellent conservatory- trained musician.

What an amazing humble, down to earth guy Roger Smith really is, he is down to business designing and improving his movements and achieving superb watchmaking like no other and yet his relatively humble collection tells an interesting story and his day to day piece is a simple Rolex Explorer given to him by his wife! what a wonderful individual.
