Talking Watches With Phil Toledano
Ғылым және технология
You don't meet people like Phil Toledano often. In fact, I can't say I've ever met someone quite like Phil Toledano, ever. By name, you might think he's a working-class guy from Jersey. He's not. Born in London to a French-Moroccan mother and American father - an artist himself - Toledano is a conceptual artist of some note. His razor sharp wit and jovial sentiment - that type that produces one-liners by the minute - has made Toledano something of a cult hero in the art world. He'll say things like, "I’m English, so I’m not frightened by death, or the shame of a large urine spot on my trousers," one minute - ever the light spot in any conversation - while simultaneously creating haunting, and truly personal work that reveals a much deeper look at the world around him. He's also a watch, and car, collector. This is your official Talking Watches with Phil Toledano. For the full story, go here: www.hodinkee.com/articles/Talk...

one of the best episodes yet... so realistic
I’d love for a second Talking watches with Phil his knowledge and collection have greatly expanded since this interview and he is such a fascinatingly lovely person.
I like that this guy doesn't have a billion dollars worth of watches. Makes it much more interesting to me anyway. A much more realistic collection.

Sometimes it almost seems like when people get the money to choose anything they can..... they all go for the same thing. That is, the thing that is regarded as most prestigious. One thing I notice on talking watches is that for those people who bought watches before they got money, the collection often becomes less interesting over time. I believe there is one episode where a dude describes how he as a kid struggled to get the funds to buy a IWC MXV because he loved it, and how he used to rock a Cartier Pasha.... and then when he becomes part of the "community" buys a Speedy and a bunch of Rolexes (Submariner, date-just the usual). Sure you might impress some people with the Rolex, but it is better to stick with your own style and not cave under the pressure of having to get specific watches to be a "real collector" or impress your peers.
Very refreshing! Nice to see a collection that is motivated by personal tastes not dollar signs. I enjoy the wide range of collectors you guys cover. Keep up the great work.
M1 in the background and an IKEA table in the foreground - What a contrast :D
That was a great episode, I love phil's awe of the world and the items he seeks out. Very well played and nice collection. No snobbery!
My all time favourite episode is the one you did with J.J. Redwick. This one comes a very very close second. Really cool vibe in this interview.
Just another great interview with Mr. Ben C. I can't tell you how much criticism i get from my wife and kids when there bindge watching Netflix and I'm watching repeat episodes of talking watches. keep e"m coming.
This day just turned into a great one

Agree 😌
I just respect everything this guys collected simply because this chap right here is just class. He got his own way of thinking and perceptual about the world. Respect!
nice to see something different AP, Patek, Rolex, Hublot ugghh arent we sick of em. i mean its nice to have those ( not hublot) but its sickening seeing them over and over again this is a very nice collection with rich story behind which is really interesting than a bunch of 40k$ watch
Out of all the talking watches episodes would have to say this collection is amazing
seems like a nice guy, nice speedmaster and awesome motors
This guys collection is the best. Not particullary because of the pieces, but because why. And because his love and simplicity of it
The last line is brilliant! I love it! Great video. One of my favorites so far.
Merging two wonderful passions,, cars and watches, the perfect combo
Ahh cars and watches, wonderful episode as always!
The best talking watches episode ever and it’s not even close.
This is a beautiful episode. His back story to every little piece whether it’s a watch or a car is mesmerising. Bravo Hodinkee and Ben!
Some great watches and dito cars. Nice work!
This is one of my favorite collections featured. All of the pieces are obtainable by most collectors, but it still shows great taste and horological history.
Talking Watches the best thing to watch on KZread shame we only get to see it once every 2 months.
What an absolute gentleman
One of the best episodes yet.
Fantastic collection, loved it to the core!
Wonderful watch and car collection. Thank you both.
love the watch/theme of today's show.
this is the collection i like the most.
Yes I would like to have a drink with this man great story nice watches and cars just great 🇬🇧
Weeeee finally!!! New fresh episode!!!!
Wow, so amazing to see something unique to vintage collecting! I think collecting has so much to do with the individual and that's what we have here, something that appeals to him. It's not about having the most complicated or the most expensive timepieces, absolutely great to see something different in someone's collection.
Love the watches, the cars, and the rationale behind both collections. The M1 is spectacular. ...
FInally a new episode. Thank the heavens.
I LOVE THIS GUY! His cars are on petrolicious and are AMAZING
Ahh, another long awaited talking watches, my fav on hodinkee's youtube!
Love this episode. I believe to call yourself a collector, you don't need an expensive or high end collection but to appreciate what you have that suit your personal taste. Those vintage watches and cars aren't posh or super luxurious, but definitely a collection with good personal taste.
Phil great knowledge great host for talking watches, love that seiko wow, longines also great collection
Fantastic video just like all of your others. I like his taste in Breitling a lot. Most of the collectors I've seen have been into way more expensive watches such as AP's and Pateks. It's good to see a truly modest collector who takes extreme pride in all of his pieces. I sincerely like his taste. Keep up the good work Hodinkee! ⏱⏱
Truly amazing car collection!
One of my favorite
Terrific content, some of the stories behind the cars and the space capsule, loved the watches as well. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to enjoy watch collecting.
I do love these.
Robin Van Persie drives nice cars and collects great watches!
Really like the vibe in this video.
Dude has some of the best taste in cars that I have seen in a long long long time
they always end with a kickAss line in Talking Watches
Really interesting guest with a unique perspective on design. I think it's time I gave vintage Breitling a second thought!
Great episode
some great watches and very interesting cars. Cool guy.
I like how this guy thinks about his collection.. 😂 I can relate to him. Love how the scratches looked in those watch..
After watching this one, I now believe I have a chance to be on Talking Watches. Still a good episode though as this guy has great style!
Nice and Funky! Love the Speedmaster.............
Finally some breitling. Yay
This is my favorite Talking Watches episode. Please do an episode with Conan O'brien.
Love it!
You should do more cars and watches conversations, there's definitely parallel to appreciation the mechanical majesty of machine and its connection to man.
It might be the watch everyone has, but I am happy to be wearing my 806 right now. I am sure the same could be said for the Speedmaster.
Funny how his collection has changed since this video
Great taste mate!! Really good taste..... both in watches and cars.
Great stuff!
That Speedmaster & that Lancia 037. 😍😍😍😍
Probably one of the coolest talking watches
Love to see some seiko! I’m a beginning collector and can’t afford some of the heavy hitters yet. But I do ha e a Rolex day date that my dad passed to me when he passed but I still ha met made my own purchase yet. And I wanty first one to an omega. Not top of the line by any means but a milestone that I want to achieve before I can make things happen way later in life. I love this series! Just need more!
+hodinkee About bloody time!!! just kidding. great video. nice to see a obtainable collection.
'By name, you might think he's a working-class guy from Jersey' Urgh you can be so up your own arse sometimes Ben.

I don't really see the point, Ben himself has a working-class name and America has no aristocracy so what is this all about?
@chrisdahlman8170

c'mon guys. It's a super working class american thing to go by short version of name... "Phil" most fancy pancy english or europeans go by long version of name, I think it's a compliment.
Great taste in both areas
I love the fact that a speedy was featured on a talking watches - makes me feel like I made the right choice in getting one.
Ben, we gotta see your collection!
car collection on fleek wow
That M1 is a stunner
I like this guy...cool watch collection. I am surprised there isn't a milsub in that group of watches though...
This guy seems like a great person
An M1! And an 037 stradale! Wow props to you mr.toledano
A person that uses this kind of NATO straps, is a photographer and car collector has all my respect.
Saw this guy on petrolicious and I saw one of his watches, great to see him on the show! I wonder where is his stratos
Ben, can you take over the talking watches again please, the last ones were a disaster! It is such an important brand intentidier as hooding to have a nice, enthusiastic interview. Please please please come back. Because of you I finally pulled the trigger in a AP royal oak 15400.
I can hear Archie Luxury now, "ALL SHITTERS!" LOL!

There's a Seiko though
Short story: That Orange M1 reminds me of a purple one I saw “in the wild”.... I was looking through the driver window when the owner walked up behind... “like it?” He asked. “Uhhh...yeah....” I answered. I noticed you have almost 70k on the clock.. “I know.. I love driving it around, what’s the point of buying something this nice if you can’t enjoy it?” I smiled. And he proceeded to slowly drive off in that glorious beast of a car. One of two I’ve ever seen in person, and they look so much better in person, much like watches.
What an interesting person
Fire watches. Even more fire cars.
That BMW M1 😍😍😍 That Lancia 037 😍😍😍 That M-B 190-evolution II 😍😍😍 That Alfa Romeo Sprint Zegato 😍😍😍 As a car enthusiast, I am in heaven.
Really missing my Speedmaster... I may have to pick up a vintage one now.
Thing this is the first time I'm in the first 1,000 views of a talking watches episode
Can we have a second episode with him ?
When I saw the thumbnail I thought to my self "ooh I want to watch this"
Phil Toledano is the type of dude who stores his expensive watches in ziploc bags.
That M1 😍
The navitimer is stunning
I love the Alfa Romeo SZ
Need a TALKING WATCHES PART 2 for MISTERENTHUSIAST ASAP PLS!!!!!

I'd give two thumbs up if I could so I'll leave a comment. Precisely what a 7 minute video about a dude's cars and watches should be.

190 I think.
Notice that Phil's watches are keep in ziploc baggies, Phil's very casual about his watches. Guys I thought I was the only person obsessed with "Talking Watches "videos. I have sent Ben and Kevin numerous post regarding more TW videos. I told two of my buddies today they should be on this. I watch the videos over and over.. Cars are awesome his watch collection is cool, maybe a little rough doe to condition of his pieces.
Just bought that Seiko. Now I'm wondering what went through my head.
