Talking Watches With Greg Selch, Father To An 'Orphan' Watch Collection

Who's Greg Selch? Well, you won't find him belting out this summer's hottest hit on Spotify, nor will he be sinking threes in the NBA. He works in the furniture business and once invested in a company hoping to revive the use of airships in commercial aviation.
What he lacks in name recognition he makes up for in an all-star collection of vintage watches that most enthusiasts typically overlook. And he isn't just collecting - he's done quite a bit of scholarship around the watches, too.
Years after meeting him, I finally had the chance to sit down with Selch and thoroughly discuss a few pieces from his collection of what he calls "orphan watches," or to put it more generously, watches that don't have a large following. At least not yet.
Watch the episode and see if he can convince you why they should.

This is the type of Talking Watches we need. Not the same kind of nebulous stories with a clear intention of just wanting to spend some money.
This is exactly what I wanted to see from Hodinkee. An interesting, humble, unique collection and a knowledgable watch lover. Not just somebody collecting the same three brands.

@@tryitout-701 Obviously I would absolutely love to own a watch from any of those brands, but what I was getting at is that talking watches has been feeling very repetitive. Like John's collection. They're all cool watches but we've seen them a million times, it's just "This Daytona is slightly different to the millions of others you've seen, therefore I spent your entire neighbourhood's life savings combined on it." It gets so boring and depressing. This video actually taught me about watches I hadn't seen before and reminded me of watches I forgot existed. And what's even better than that, I can afford them.
One of the best episodes so far. Mr Selch - amazing collection, it's great to see so big variety of watches and no single Rolex/Omega/PP/AP etc. etc. congrats !

I see you wear a Seiko...LOL, jk. This chap has some bizarre pieces.
I really like Cole’s calmness and certain positivity in his approach. And the collector...truly appreciative and lover of horology.
My favorite Talking Watches yet. So humble and excited about his orphan time pieces.
I get pretty tired of the same ol' high-end watch brands, but this was so refreshing. Lots of stuff I've never seen before. Reminded me why I collect watches. Great video!
Would have been nice to formally introduce Greg to the audience. I had no idea who he was. I had to google him.

Absolutely one of the most compelling episodes so far. Great collection focusing on pieces with real history and a guest that marches to the beat of his own drum. Fantastic stuff.
One of the nicest collections I've seen in a long time. Welcome change from all the (overhyped) new stuff 😊👍🏻
This episode is truly amazing , the fact that they are worn and unrestored , tells a great story , i have been watching a lot of watch videos , but i have never seen anything this genuine , till now , and i have learned some new things !!
One of the top 3 or 4 episodes ever. This is what TW should be.
My favourite Talking Watches to date. Here's someone who doesn't follow but leads.
Ah finally an episode :o
A true collector. An interesting, humble, unique collection and a knowledgable watch lover. Not just somebody collecting the same three brands.
That Doxa Military seconds hand dragging a piece of dust around with it KILLS me! Brilliant!
Now this is the collection of a true watch lover! Thank you Hudinki for this episode!
Absolutely amazing episode. This is what collecting means to me. All the pieces are unique, rare, special, yet unseen, unknown, waiting to be discovered... Please do make more of such collectors!
So glad this series is back!! This episode was very cool, you get the impression there is a unique search/journey behind every piece.
I must say that this episode has been refreshing and highly informative throughout - great to see a collection which captures the essence of watch collecting.

I clicked this on a whim and this it has to be one of the best episodes of Talking Watches. I have a lot of research to do after seeing this!
I keep coming back to this one. It's like a movie for me about the real joy of collecting. This is the good stuff!
Wonderful collection. These obscure gems are where watching collecting gets really fun and exciting. A history lesson. Thank you.
Just brilliant! Greg is one of the nicest guys on Instagram, a true enthusiast and a gentleman. Bravo Hodinkee bravo 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Great episode, love the shear amount of history on display here! Particularly like the UGs and the Gallet!
What a fantastic episode! This is what talking watches should be about. Kudos!!
The OG Plaubel Makina on the shelf is awesome. I have a Plaubel Makina 670 and it's the best camera I've ever used.
This is, without any doubt, the best Talking Watches up untill now with the possible exception of Jean-Claude Biver. Less "Rich Boy Stars" and more commun and very uncommun very savy peole and collectors like Mr. Greg Selch ! Amazing interview ! Congratulations ! More of these, please !
This is the type of talking watches that i will watch over and over again
It is indeed about time we had some of this proper watch nerdery - fascinating collection. Now if only old mate Pulverine can get some of this action on the pod... wouldn't that make for some interesting listening. Bravo Cole - congrats to Greg on an incredible collection of watches.
This is so much better than looking at the same three pateks over and over again
This is what i like to see. No hype, carefully curated and proper vintage.
One of the best episode in hodinkee..No hype, not pretentious and amazing host.Proper collector, proper episode.
Someone I've always wanted to see on Talking Watches is Conan O'Brian. Not sure why, but every time I watch a clip of his I see his watch and wonder about his collection

This is a massively important episode of talking watches. I love Goldberger, Mayer, Fred Savage, and many other talking watches episodes. However, this is a democratic episode of talking watches. This is what people need.
Love how most of his watches are now "obscure" brands that most people don't know about. A true enthusiast. Absurd collection!
This is a fantastic and unique collection, and a killer Talking Watches episode after a long time.
Now that’s a collection a watch enthusiast can appreciate.
I hope that this episode gets a lot of views to emphasize to the Hodinkee editorial team what the audience wants. Put it in Reddit, share it y’all!

Great guy and awesome collection!
Appreciated to see a collection showing his thoughts and personality.
Breath of fresh air, not just a unrealistic collection of golden pateks. More like this please :D
This might be my favorite Talking Watches. Thanks for the knowledge Hodinkee and Mr. Greg Selch. 🙏
This feels like a return to the original Talking Watches. Great interview. Authentic and fun! Reminds me why I love this hobby.
It is lovely to see you back again
What an eclectic collection of vintage watches. Great interview.
A kind of the episodes which restores my faith in watch collection, not anyone who keeps collecting different Rolexes or Omegas. This is the humble and true collection... something which I have been trying to do with my collection. I really appreciate for making this episode. Please make more of them!!
Fantastic video - pure and to the heart of collecting by a genuine enthusiast! Well done Greg and Cole!
Wow! What a great episode. This was fun. Watches are fun.
Oh I loved just listening to Greg talk about watches. This is exactly what I needed!
Finally a collection that's not all rolex and patek.
Very very nice video!. So refreshing to see a true watch collector talking watches out of knowledge and passion.
Great episode, love how he has just a duffel bag full of watches. Great job!
Awesome video, thank you so much for that, loved it!
Hands down the best talking watches episode.
Working on a Valjoux 72 or 72s is a test in watchmaking competency IMHO. Sorry, I keep posting but this is my fave episode so far.
this was such an educational episode, i learnt so much from such a well-curated collection. it felt like an actual collection and not a showcase of rich people buying rich popular watches. thank you so much!
The best TW yet! This guy’s passion and knowledge is infectious
This is 10x better than most TW episodes. He has passion, knowledge and history. More like this please.
Insanely beautiful collection! (no polishing, it's extra extra!) It was a pleasure to watch them thank you.
Thank you for this interview. Greg is a true connoisseur. 🙏🏼
Much enjoy collectors like this so much - real passion and explains and showcases in a fun way! Not flexing, even for rare and obscure items.

Great episode. No offence to the series, but so refreshing to hear someone talk about something else than their Submariners and Seamasters and Pateks. Lots of cool and quirky pieces here, when will we see someone talk about their Vostoks and Raketas?

What a fascinating guy with an amazing collection of great wristwatches which he researched, collected and wore as these were meant to... more "vintage" Talking Watches please !!! Edit: Hoping there's a part 2 to this...
Always a good day when a new Talking Watches airs.
Amazing episode. Really opens up your mind to all the vintage brands out there
One of the best episode !
My attitude to watch collecting changed after watching this, a true collector
Very impressive vintage collection. More of these please.
Finally an actual enthusiast and not just a “let me roll out the same watches you’ve seen in every video and call it my watch collection” video. Great episode, great collection
