I’m partially fluent in Japanese and a Japanese couple came up to me and my family asking for directions in broken English when we were walking around downtown. I asked them where they needed to go in Japanese and they blinked and took a second to register that a white girl living in America knew their language😂 They finished the conversation with me and complimented me on my Japanese and thanked me. Needless to say I think my family was more shocked than they were😂

It's not just the pronunciation of the words, but also how well they enunciate the word, as well as how well they differentiate the four tones that is part of speaking the language. A Chinese would be able to differentiate two people who can speak it well and another that can only barely pronounce the word, something that people that do not know the language wouldn't be able to catch. Maybe also because english and chinese have pretty different pronunciations too, it's quite difficult to speak the opposite language well. ~from a multilingual

竟然来我外了 哈哈哈 我想说 我们学小语种的 因为每天脑子里都是小语种 尤其是大一和大二的时候 对象国语言会和英语混在一起 发音和语法 还记得我大一的时候 上英语课 竟然连we都不确定怎么读了 看到那个葡语大一的学妹 仿佛看到了以前的自己 真的很真实了
