    Pointers I can think of: Never leave the beeps until you've got money in the bank. Never change circling directions mid thermal. Blue sky days are hard. It's never the gear, always the pilot. Big sink vario sounds always happen before big beep sounds! Loved this video Woody!

    One I can think of - dark things should reflect more heat than light thing. I'd think the forests and parking lots would cause more lift than the open sandy fields he kept trying.

    @@hornetnz I believe its the material of the ground that matters more than the color. Yes the black pavement will get the hottest but it might not conduct the heat into the air as well as, say, yellow dirt.

    Trees absorb thermal energy so dont give it off, think in a forest in summer its cold. Pavements are too small and many parking areas absorb heat all day until evening. Ploughed fields and rock are the best triggers. Fields heat up quickly and have a lot of surface area, rocks keep heat overnight and when hot will release that energy quickly when full

    My experience with free flight is that parking lots and dirt fields just reflect the heat into the air. Low dense vegetation like corn fields trap the heat and hold it until it builds and breaks and produces a thermal. I once flew low over a gain bin shining in the hot sun for about 5 min but no thermal. look for tall grass shining in the sun and like Kyle said. Blue skies are had. Cumulous = Thermals on the up wind side of the cloud. Great footage as always !

    Hey Woody, some tips from a hang glider pilot on thermals: -Learn about clouds, they are your best indicator of whats going on -someone once told me "if you turn the world upside down, every point that water would drip off of is where you will find a thermal" Hope that helps; have fun and fly safe!

  • @kalbic
    @kalbic5 жыл бұрын

    Coming from a HG pilot here. Fields are good choices but also look at all those houses and asphalt, those are great thermal generators. Thermals can come in all shapes and sizes. They can be broken up in bubbles or torn apart by winds, shear. One of my best tips for thermals is this, sometimes one side of your wing will get lifted and this will put you into a turn to the opposite side, go with the turn and come back around, the lift is usually a edge of a thermal and you can circle right back around into it. This technique works great with hang gliders, not sure about paragliders. Also, thermals start as bubbles on the ground and sometimes they need a trigger to let go. Wind can trigger them, cars can do it too, watch for vehicles moving below you, tractors moving in a field are always a good trigger. When you get to the top of a thermal it will get bumpy, or what I call bubbly, like you are floating on the top of a boiling pot of water.

    Great video Woody. I love doing this type of thing too. To add to your comments about preparing to land being more of a priority when your getting low.....i would say that is the greater priority, taking a collapse, or asymmetric at such a low level due to a punchy thermal can be a hair raising experience at best ( believe me) at worst it leaves you insufficient time or altitude to do your fancy recovery magic! And if you are wearing a motor.... Just land and go again!

    A tornado isn't actually the updraft - that's out ahead of the storm in the inflow region, and forms the larger mesocyclone (which is the part you can actually see rotating with Doppler radar). The exact process that leads to the tornado isn't completely understood, but all signs indicate it's related to the rear flank downdraft, the descending cold partner of the updraft - whatever it is has to come downward to transfer the rotation from the storm down to the ground.

    I don't do mid day flying....at least not yet anyway....however, I really noticed that our part of the country (the corn alps - the midwest) when you go over black dirt, you can really get some late day thermals going......not so much on the dirt that has vegetation on it......the same for blacktop......that stuff heats up so fast.....or a good sized pond....great video...it was nice to take this flight with ya! ;)

    Learning how to read a Skew-T (the vertical temp/humidity/wind profile from weather balloon launches, but you can get simulated versions from models too) should help you find days with good thermals. High pressure will definitely be a problem though because of the large-scale sinking motion - that clear sky is the giveaway. Look for approaching warm fronts, surface-based CAPE, the sort of days where you get lots of light cumulus in the afternoons.

    There are two core concepts to thermals. Heat accumulation and triggers, which you are talking about here, but also the macro side of things, where thermals actually are and how big they are. A thermic "area" will shut down lift near it, sucking all the hot air into it instead, so regardless of how good a field looks, if it's not in the area it won't generate lift. A general rule of thumb is that if you are at 2k agl or less (maybe higher on a pg, depends on the size of thermals and your glide performance), if you are in what feels like an active thermic area and you genuinely leave that area and go on glide, you're going to land, so you need to find lift in that area. The taller the thermals, the greater the distance between areas. What vario do you have? It kinda sounds a bit diseased XD

  • @entelin

    @entelin

    5 жыл бұрын

    Also consider that it is of almost equal importance to understand where where sink lives and where lift will be suppressed. Certain wind patterns shown on lakes / crops can be telltales. Patterns of clouds, downwind of lakes, etc.
