Talking Style: Why I Don't Really Like Playing the Song "Kiss"
It's no secret at this point that Prince is, has been and always will be my favorite “B.A.S.E.” Player - him and just about anyone who had the salt to hold the chair in his band. Yes, I’ve got my preferences out of that bunch as well but we’ll rap about that later!
In this episode I’m going show you why I don’t always like playing the song “Kiss,” and why I do - when I really do! I’ll show you some of my favorite bass lines from his live arrangements from the late 90’s to 2010.

It's about the Blues too, funky blues.
Nice picture of Prince , nice groove , much thanks. Happy New Year 2017
everything you said and played was golden, thank you!
I really like the differing perspectives/mini history lesson you present on this tune, both because of the points you make about space and groove and because they illustrate that there's more than one valid way to approach it. If I end up playing this tune with a band, I imagine that I'll play my own line, but it will be informed by the lines and ideas that you presented here (and I'll go back and listen to a few different recordings of it). Thanks for taking the time to post this.
MORE PRINCE PLEASE ! I love him. He was my biggest inspiration and whatever I write here is just not appropriate to express what I feel when I just think about him and his music... so please more Prince, more analyse and all that stuff. I love analyse his music but I'm interesting how it's your POV on his music and his legend. Anyway thanks :)
Great stuff. Big help ... love the variety of approaches.
Thank you soo much for sharing this toughs and research, all this is very insightful .
Dude, this video is ace. I play in a history of blues show at the edinburgh fringe festival every year and this year we are doing a a pop medley to show off how the blues gets everywhere. Anyway, we are doing this tune and I've been trying to find a way to get the bass in (at the bands request, tbh I'd rather just stay true to the original track). This video has given me the tools I need to keep the band happy and not over play on the song for no good reason. Great stuff!

I love the blues and especially funky blues.
Hi Blyss, love your videos. And Prince is the reason I fell in love with the Bass! Can you please do one on "Get it Up, The Stick, Call My Name and Do Me Baby" sometime this year?? I heard all those songs live in concert and they are funky as hell. And thank you for doing what you do!
Really good, I just sent your video to my bass player, cheers!
I really liked this video. Thanks. I'm connecting now.

It's not quantity it's quality.
You're right. Musicians often play too much. In addition, there are songs and artists we better should not cover in top 40 bands:. Prince, Michael Jackson, Elvis. . . they were all very special and unique. To study bass lines like I want you back, Jackson 5 or Lets work, Prince, Suspicious Minds, Elvis is great and very helpful. But to pay tibute to their legacy we better dont cover them except for we are in a briliant TOP 40 band ;-)
1, 2 and a pop, pause. 1,2 and a pop, pause. I like the third one, there's a lot of space like you said. @ 6:50 that's the ticket right there. Or you can be like -1 e and a 2 and a pop - I can hear Larry doing this, at least once.
First line sounded like 17 Days
Blyss- what's the name of that Karaoke drum groove?

Thank you Blyss! I'm cool with downloading it legitimately. As basic as it is the drum track has a nice feel/sound
5 years ago, still relevant. I'm checking this out today and funny thing. I'm slapping with flatwounds too. And! I know D.A. but, I'm using MAGMA flats. Because, D.A. doesn't keep up. I guess the P-Demic was P-Rivate. Music is language, Let's Talk. Mark Anthony San Francisco/New York
The title nearly put me off, so am glad I persisted.
the song i played before was, sam and dave Soul man xDDDD

I think for this song, the opening bass is very hard to place, I don't play a lot for this part of the song. I think Nik West version is pretty funky, my version is pretty funky, but nobody else covers this song cause Prince hated covers. Oh well, so sorry your Purpleness. The second half of the song, it opens up then I play a little more for verse 3. "Women not girls, rule my world. I said they rule my world". Leaves us with a outline as a bass player, it's blues guitar right ?. D, A is the key, It's funk but that's all we are really dealing with here, funky blues is what they used to call it. You need to respect blues style to even really try this, I think a lot of guys just do not have the ability to play with Prince. It's like imagine some Jazz dude trying to play Master of Puppets, now you have most guitar players. Prince was predecessor to James Brown, not an easy guy to cover. Definitely helps to have a blues background. You got it though dude, just wait until that third verse and then you can let it hang out a little bit. have fun.
Sounds exactly like Maze & Frankie Beverly bass line. Who cares tho, its funky. And that is a funkey tune. If Mono has covered it then its funk. Not to deviate from the poetic justice of paying mad respects to the man, the myth, the legend but if you get a chance can you do a lesson on Madonna's Papa Don't Preach? I kno, i know ... its cheese but I like cheese. It goes well with my whine. Great lesson as always. I made a tiny donation to the cause. Mad respect and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm a sound man by trade and if I had a quarter for every time I've heard Kiss butchered ..... ooo lawd. Muso's! Pay attention to the acronym! Keep it simple, silly.
