He sure looks like a happy boy to me. So many people anthropomorphize these animals and think they must want the same things people want. Even a house-cat is not fully “domesticated.” In certain settings they can even become feral. He has tons of space and toys and shelter, thousands of square feet to be a wild cat. It’s amazing to me how big cat owners project so much onto these wild cats that deserve so much more than they could possibly offer.

Does Simba get the physical affection that a hand raised cat would expect? I know you have a hands off policy for most of the cats, but Simba was a house cat. I cannot fathom how the previous owner could give him up. They must have been moving to a smaller place, a place without enough space for Simba or with a no pets rule. Simba certainly seems willing to actively engage with everyone in a convivial fashion. He must love tour groups.

i don't think any of those were the issue. they tried very hard to get the owner to keep the cat. i think he just needed more care and attention than she was willing to give him. i mean you can hear how vocal he is. stupid people that think it's some kind of status symbol to have a cat that should be in the wild. i do feel that since he spent most of his life with people and he, i'm sure was petted and cuddled that someone should be doing that. he seems to be missing his owner. it makes me sick that this poor sweet boy is sad and lonely because of another ignorant human!!

Mariah Martinez Yeah, and using that stick to feed a cat that lived in a house, laid in laps, and was scratched for a decade and a half is BS.... I get that they can’t have unpaid volunteers with no training in his cage for insurance and legal reasons, but the vet, and TRAINED members of paid staff should be going into cages and giving loving to the cats that were raised in homes when they are showing certain signs of wanting physical attention. I am glad BCR does what it does, but seriously, it is just as cruel to deprive the animals of all physical contact when they are used to it and especially showing signs they want it....

Because people are selfish and only care about themselves-- they don't stop and consider that animals have feelings too. I feel especially sad for this one, because he had human interaction for what will likely be more than half of his entire life span-- his whole life he's known nothing but human touch and interaction, then when his people, for whatever selfish reason, decided they didn't want him anymore, he's now forced to live outside, in a cage, without any human touch, which he had for 14 years-- that's a long time. What a pity.

They are easily leash trained and DO NOT REQUIRE A RAW MEAT DIET. Almost zero health issues. They can eat regular cat food. There are only a hand of the usual suspects for states that take issue with these cats. Surprisingly CA isnt one of them. The whole west coast is free until Denver then Texas... Actually if you read his story of why he ended up there you would know he did not enjoy that sort of attention. His owners turned him over because he was aggressive. • @TiffWaffles

His previous owners abandoned him because they didn't want him anymore. Unfortunately, there's a lot of stigma surrounding these cats as they have caused a lot of problems with people that don't bother doing the research. A lot of breeders don't care. They won't socialize the cat before it is ready to go to a new home, and a lot of the time these cats grow up to become wild cats that have the ability to cause serious harm. So many jurisdictions in Canada and the United States are coming up with laws to prohibit these cats. Savannah's may be gorgeous and some may even be excellent pets, but so many people are finding it difficult to have them because they are wild. It's sad. Simba is a beautiful cat and I would love him, but if he attacked his owners the same way that others like him have done, then he belongs in this sanctuary. Sanctuaries normally kill Savannah Cats. They are not adopted out of local animal shelters, and if they are seized or given up to the animal shelter, they are usually put down. I think that the people you should be most angry with are his original owners. Wasn't he abandoned at an airport in a cat carrier?

When he wasn’t sleeping in bed with us at night he would walk around talking or like I said singing to us. It tore me apart when he passed. I had him from a kitten and he moved to three different states with me. Always riding in the car with me the whole way to our new home. He stayed in hotels with me too. He was my best friend and I will always love and miss him. Not a day has gone bye that I haven’t thought about him. I couldn’t imagine having a pet for 14 years and then giving it up. I have had Bengals for 17 years. He talks exactly a Bengal. My Bengals have always hated being picked up, but loved hugs and kisses. My Bengal-Tobin, who I lost last year, at age 15, to lymphoma, despised being picked up, but he would sit on the back of an upholstered chair and chatter at anyone going by. Then he would give "head bumps " and keep bumping you with his head until he got hugs and tons of kisses on the top of his head. If you tried walking away, he started with th he came vocalizations that Simba uses. I think he is saying. In Simba words, that he needs...not just wants...but I think he is saying he needs that physical connection. The physical demonstration of love. I cant even imagine, with the intelligence level that this guy is working with.... I cant imagine, with his intellect, what in the world must be going through his mind. People are fast to say that they are just animals and lack the int err lligencecthst humans have. Well, my Bengal (first cousin of s Savannah) showed problem solving intelligence and deductive reasoning. My brother committed suicide several years ago and we had to wait weeks for the medical examiner to release his body, so we couldn't even have a funeral...I wouldn't eat and stayed in bed except for using the ladies room. One day, as I moved the blanket, I found s pile of dry cat food because Tobin had been bringing me his food! No he is not ivy league educated, but certainly he showed intelligence and empathy! My point is that Simba is a complete being requiring, like a human, much more than food, water, and shelter. I hope there is a way to give him the physical contact that can try to ease the loss of the physical and emotional bounds that were torn from him. God Bless you, for all you do for God's creatures like Simba, who find themselves discarded and unwanted. My heart cries for Simba.

It does seem really backwards but it's good to keep in mind that savannahs are bred with wild cats, and you get a truly tame cat through selective breeding over several generations, essentially trying to breed submission into the cat's descendants. If this is an F1 Savannah, he might find himself less stressed overall in a setup like this, where he can do stuff that savannahs might like to do that doesn't fit well with the "house cat" lifestyle. I do think because of his upbringing this cat should be held closer to humans but over time he might make the switch to the big cat life very quickly.

I really don't like comments like yours. While I also genuinely hate an animal being abandoned, there are circumstances that can arrive in life that are unexpected or sometimes cause a person to make a choice they don't want to make. The cat was a pet for FOURTEEN years before having been let go. I highly doubt the owner just willy nilly made the decision to give it up for some mundane reason. How could you possibly know the reason behind the owners situation hmm? You don't. You don't know shit and you should just keep your mouth shut until otherwise. For all we know they could be heartbroken at having to get rid of the cat. How absolutely ignorant, rude and disgusting of you to say such things as smashing someones teeth out with a brick over a situation that you know FUCK ALL about. Personally what you said, makes you out to be a more despicable human than the original owner of the cat. Actions speak louder than words, and the actions of the owner at least resulted in this cat being taken to a safe place where he can be fed a treated well! Which is alot more than you can say from behind your computer screen talking shit link a blind idiot.

*Big Cat Rescue - **_Please explain!!_* Simba was kept as a _House Cat_ for 14 years (nearly ⅔ of a domestic cat's lifespan); therefore, he was accustomed to being treated like a PET which most likely included physical affection, play..., etc., until he grew bored with it. Isn't this breed a cross between a Serval or similar "friendly" wild Asian or African small feline and a domestic Bengal? When I listen to Simba's loud, angry vocals plus watch him skirting the fence, I can't help but feel he is begging for physical attention. Ear scratches or chin and cheek tickles may be sufficient for him to acclimate to the staff and volunteers. Not once did he appear threatening or I could be reading his body language & vocalizations totally wrong. I can't help but feel a golden opportunity is slipping away along with Simba's acquired tameness.

Savanah cats are hybrids. Part African serval, part domestic house cat. The generation can influence a lot of behavior, particularly in F1 or F2 generations. That being said, why on earth is this cat kept so separate from humans? He's 14, clearly accustomed to the domestic housecat life (though he's a 3k $ wild hybrid, but still); I can understand wanting to give him an outdoor enclosure, since Savanahs are notoriously high strung, and need lots of room. But I see no reason to treat him like a wild serval at this stage in his life. Look, I'm a wildlife rehabilitator, so I totally understand keeping wild things wild. But this poor cat is not wild, and having lived with humans for so long, could at least have been given a much slower introduction to the outdoor life (the video maybe belies that; i can't tell though from the footage if there was a more gradual absence of human contact/human settlement or if he was left mostly to himself right away). Having said that, I understand completely that the situation was difficult, and you guys did what you thought was the best for him. I've rescued foxes out of similar situations, where they were kept indoors as pets for their entire lives, and therefore held no behavioral semblance to a wild fox. In those situations though, we try to keep the foxes socialized with people, like they're used to. We play with them, feed them treats, and eventually find them new homes, since they can't be reintroduced to the wild. Perhaps behind the scenes, you guys did more for him that we just don't know about. I can respect the decision, if there was one, to leave that out of the video, since you guys are an educational group. But if not, then that doesn't seem very fair to the cat, from the perspective of the public or myself.

Savannah cats are not much larger than domestic cats; they are taller, but weigh no more than a Maine Coon cat. They are a cross between a serval and a domestic cat, and are not wild cats. This particular cat was raised from a kitten and for 14 years as a house cat. The reason for his abandonment is not given, and this sanctuary is better than being dumped on the streets. BUT this IS a house cat, NOT a wild cat, so I don't understand why this facility insists on treating him as if he were wild or with some possibility of being released into the wild. It is bad enough that he was abandoned, but it is cruel to dump him, cold turkey, into a large strange enclosure, even as nice as it is, with no TLC. So BCR, would it really be such a huge burden to provide him and other cats from close domestic environs with some petting, lap time, hugs, and luvin', especially when the animal clearly wants that contact? Perhaps you need to establish an "Intermediate Care" department for these animals, or actively seek appropriate forever homes for them.

J Bello Their enclosures give the animals a great amount of space. You can’t really see it in the video. They have lots of places to hide too.

If you have it outside, it needs to be enclosed or it will run away. They have lots of other big cats too, but you can't put them together.

Think of it,,,, Your parents leave you forever!!!!!! He felt the same and maybe worse!!!! So sad!!!!! Looks like he’s doing well!!!!! Why couldn’t the owner find a forever home for him?!??? At least he didn’t just let him go somewhere. So many owners will just move away and leave their cat feral. So scary for them 😔

Pathetic taking a house cat and shoving him in a cage,my neighbor has three of these cats ,yea, they aren't kitty cats,my dogs love playing with them and they get along so well, very intelligent animals know how to open doors and sliders and windows so have to keep everything locked up or they'll get out and terrify the neighborhood, not lap cats unless they own you on their terms, love bites.walk em on a leash like a dog,so sad to see this.

Why do they keep them on a leash? Probably because they're still wild cats and would run for the hills and never look back if they got out. My domestic cats choose to come home every day….

@@EleonorS I live in an area with lots of busy streets, large owls, and occasionally even coyotes (though they usually don't come to this part of town). Back when I had a cat who had any interest in going outdoors, I got her a leash, because even if she might have wanted to go off on her own and would've came back, it just wasn't safe. She was bold (like most Savannah cats are), and even with me there, she still nearly managed to get into a fight with a stray once (and good look keeping an eye on your cat while its running loose). They had a leash because its better safe than sorry.

@@EleonorS They keep them on a leash because they have to be walked and if they are not on a leash they can easily run off. No they are not "wild" look up information on them before calling them wild. What you have here is basically a very energetic house cat that is being kept in a cage.

While I appreciate the work your team does overall, in this instance you are torturing an elderly cat that has spent its life with human companionship, affection and socialization. While a hybrid, he is clearly adapted to human interaction and being a pet. His former owner maybe a shitbag of the worst sort, but BCR is compounding the horror. Yes, I am saying Big Cat Rescue is torturing one of their cats. The body language and vocalizing , such as the pressing his muzzle through the cage bars shows this. If it would put your facility at risk to properly care for this senior animal, you should have arranged for a foster that COULD properly care for him. Again, I generally adore the work your team does, but I despise this action and the entire team perpetrating this onto poor Simba. Insert a barrage of foul language directed at everyone involved. You could have abd should have done better, and this animal will suffer a solitary existence at your hands.

I wonder how much effort was put into trying to re-home him? He was a house cat for so long I have to wonder how happy he will be living in an enclosure and having so little direct human contact.
