Talking Parrot's Reaction to His New House

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is the first time Apollo, Soleil, and Ophelia have seen the house we're moving to. Apollo handled it pretty well all things considered.
Apollo is our 4 year-old African Grey parrot we've had since December 2020.

Such child-like thinking. I remember a lot of friends having to have goodbye rituals for their old houses. Their littles needed that closure to understand moving on. How do you explain this to a bird?

Same thing with "i wanna go outside". He doesnt want to be in the scary new place so hes asking repeatedly to leave.

@SnappyGW He does too. He is going to have an aviary for outside time. A pet parrot isnt like a wild bird. I rescue dogs. And people often dump dogs in the wilderness thinking theyd be free and happy. But doing that is like dumping a 10 year old kid out there with a knife and telling them to go be free. They are domesticated animals that rely on humans. They die out there. Even feral dogs live in or around human settlements. Apollo and the girls are the same. They arent wild, they are human raised birds. Even if you took apollo to a flock of wild greys, he wouldnt be accepted nor would he know how to communicate with them, find food etc.

I do genuinely believe they associate words/sounds with certain actions, but what is more I also believe they're capable of using words as commands for us, to express their wants and needs. My Churchill (African Grey) is 4 now, and he's not particularly keen on the hoover. He is not afraid of it but he does not like it all the same... so he has taken it upon himself to continuously mimic the sound the hoover makes as it is turned off, and loses suction. The noise of it losing suction he will repeat continuously, and I genuinely believe he's trying to tell it/me to stop hoovering. Very intelligent...

Aww he was so scared. Kept his feathers so close to himself. I know he'll adjust but he was so funny when he said, "Do you want to go back?" I know you know this already but be careful around the painted trims and walls as it's an older house and more than likely it has lead in the paint. Congrats on the new place lovely wood flooring. Best of luck. Love Luna and Nova.

I have now been a bird guy for over 20 years. Never had any kind of bird until I had a giant macaw for my first bird. You did the right thing by taking them over and introducing them to the new digs and then taking them back home, if that's what you did. These birds have great memories and they find comfort in things that are familiar. Y'all are great bird friends. Always great to see the way you treat them.

4:10 Sounds like Apollo found a new bad noise to make... unless that one isn't quite as loud as the first bad noise, but there's a lot of reverb heard after the one in this vid. I wonder if you will have to disconnect the door alarm or whatever that was so Apollo doesn't make the noise.

I feel like this shows his feelings because when you finally get in there and take him out he says "ready go back?" and it's like wow he really knows. You guys have done pretty amazing in training him to really understand things. Also super great that he took it so well despite not taking the treat. Birds are so sensitive to changes and I think you guys did a wise thing by having them come check it out before moving everything in so it's not so much of a shock. I was actually surprised the girls flew on the window seal like they did. Hopefully they'll help him feel better about it all as time goes on. Even though they're not the same species, I feel the fact that he isn't alone does really help that process out a lot. For all of them too though, not just Apollo.
