Talk to Al Jazeera in the field - African migrants: What really drives them to Europe?

Thousands of Africans put their lives at risk as they go on a boat journey in search of what they think would be a better and easier living. It is a journey that begins with hope, but often ends in despair.
Most of them depart from Libya late at night, travelling across the Mediterranean Sea in broad streams with Italy as their central destination.
Last year, more than 170,000 migrants arrived there, representing the largest influx of people into one country in European Union history.
Most of the migrants are Eritrean and Syrian but numerous Africans from sub-Saharan regions also use this route.
This year almost 2,000 people have died trying to make this crossing. And the Libyan coast guard intercepts many of the boats transporting illegal immigrants from across Africa to Italy.
We travelled off the coast of Libya to meet African migrants risking everything for a future in Europe.
Who are they? Where do they come from? And what do they expect to find on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea?
Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid meets three young Africans who are in a Libyan detention centre: Patrick Jabbi, 27, from Congo; Baba Lami, 19, from Gambia; and Alima Bakhari, 23, from Nigeria, who was one of the few women on the boat that was boarded by the Libyan coast guard.
We find out more as Patrick, Baba and Alima talk to Al Jazeera in the field.

*To any would be African migrants planning to go to Europe who may be reading this* (somehow): There is no Free House, Job, Car and Money waiting for you in Berlin, Rome, London or Paris. It is unlikely, you would be living in a luxury villa in the French Riviera, driving a Ferrari on the Autobahn or getting a free education in Oxford. The likelihood is (as it is for many migrants who do get to Europe) is that you'd end up homeless, jobless and possibly hungry living on the streets of Rome or London or squatting in a slum in Calais. It's better to stay home or apply legally (as difficult as it may seem).

infinitecanadian i think there is a less than one percent chance someone who is in their situation will see this video or comment. i know immigration is a hot topic issue but stories of migrant I look at these kind of stories with empathy for the struggles of everyone involved. i see people suffering and its hard but the truth is europe is not the answer so its sad because you watch this and know they are screwed either way. so i feel for the whole situation. we all have to count our blessings to the little to big luxury we get to have by just being born where we are. the solution is that countries of the migrants be fixed but if its going to happen it will take a very long time.

***** I actually recall watching a BBC documentary about Indian and/or East European migrants in Britain who were living illegally in Britain but given they can't get a job, housing or anything, they're actually now paying people smugglers to actually take them out of England and back to where they came from. Reason the Home Office won't deport them is because, they destroyed their passports and travel documents so they can't be deported.

I'm Nigerian and I'm not only ashamed that my country is so bad at helping its own people help themselves WITHIN our country, so much so that they go through these kind of journeys to Europe; I am also ashamed of the Nigerians women rhetoric at the beginning that god will get her to Europe and also her underlying assumption that life will be better for her in Europe, as if things are so easy and peachy in Europe. I remember when this crisis first started I criticised the idea that no differentiation between migrants and refugees were being made and that Europe was just adopting this liberal, arms wide open stance where we'd all blindly turn our eyes to the realities and difficulties taking in a large population of people who may not assimilate into countries and cultures different from their own and who seem to have an assumption that Europe owed them a certain standard that they imagined they deserved, as if Europe didn't have its own problems that would hinder that. I'm so disappointed by the outcome of this crisis in 2017

i can understand what you are meaning...but probably it's the lack of higher education plus very one-sided stories about europe. the migrants who stranded in my region, mostly west africans such as gambians and nigerians, they didn't know about the difficult migrant laws in germany. some just have seen social media posts of people in europe, standing in front of fancy cars and wearing designer clothes. sometimes reality just hits them, when they receive letters about their planned deportation. it's a huge drama, but the system is to blame, not the individuals. nigeria needs its youth to build a strong and modern country

Listening to that women was just disturbing. Not only is she a religious lunatic with her prophecies that she will survive the trip because she "believes in God", what was most annoying is that she believes it is her right to be in Europe because she wants a a better future for her family and a "sweet life". WTF. You are not the only person on earth that wants those things. Honestly the only thing I got from this video is the utter sense of hopelessness most Africans have for a better future. The best thing the West can do is promote family control and economic development and most importantly hold those governments accountable for the rampant corruptions, I believe those things will go a long way.

Green grass is watered by citizens of a European country. Africans must learn to water the ground they are standing on so as to produce green grass in the future. There are utility bills, rent, food to be paid for in a European country. There's nothing for free in the world. Even the woman you love, you still have to pay a dowry to marry her.

To anyone saying Africa is poor because Europe plundered it: 1) 100-200 years or so seems too short a time to both conquer an entire continent and drain most of its natural resources with the knowledge and technology available at the time. (Even today it would be quite the challenge.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonisation_of_Africa#Scramble_for_Africa 2) Europe was technologically more advanced at the time. Youd think that the natives would have learned something useful from the white man during the colonial period. 3) My personal opinion is that Africas poverty has its roots in its too rapid decolonization. The continent lost too many experienced leaders in too many fields in too short a time resulting in the collapse of the system and chaos. 4) If life is so bad and they are constantly facing hunger then why are they having so many children? To anyone saying that white people should pay for enslaving black people: 1) Noone should be punished for his forefathers crimes. By such a logic everyone on the planet should be punished because somewhere down the line we have a forefather that did something horrendous. 2) Before colonization Africans sold other Africans into slavery. www.understandingslavery.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=368&Itemid=227 3) Most Europeans were not involved in slavery. They did not own or trade slaves. If they did Europe would have a much larger non-European population since long ago. Slavery was something that the wealthy people of the time did. 4) There were white slaves (Irish for example). In fact serfdom was in some cases basically slavery. (Serfs could not move to a different region, had to work for their lord, could be beaten if they slacked off. Serfs could be bought, sold or gifted although usually that was just part of the transaction with the piece of land they were tied to.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serfdom en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadtluft_macht_frei To anyone saying Europe should accept the refugees: 1) Not all the refugees are fleeing from war or persecution. Many are just looking for an easier life and we basically have no way to sort them out, no way to even be sure they come from where they claim to come. 2) Why are the refugee boats mostly filled with young able bodied men? If they are fleeing then who will restore order in their countries of origin? Who will protect the women and children? 3) Africa is 3 times the size of Europe, why cant the refugees find refuge in African nations that are culturally far more similar? The whole continent is not in a state of war. 4) No nation or nationality should be obligated to take steps towards its own demise.

nipi tiri Europe still takes an enormous amount of resources and wealth out of Africa. Just think of French Total, Royal Dutch Shell or BP and how they used African oil to finance WW2 and to rebuild Europe again after WW2. In West Africa the French had even established their own currency, so that they wouldn't have to pay Ghanaian Oil in USD. Or think of the coltan and diamond mines which are controlled exclusively by a few rich shareholders from London. So what Africa has received from us in return, comes close to nothing compared to what we got out of it. It's a tinyminey fraction. And the little we paid was paid in large as bribery and weaponry (well, to defend our resources). Slavery was only the prolog if you will. It's an ongoing systematic exploitation of a whole continent and the people who live there which lasts for more than 500 years. That's a huge amount of dough and blood we are talking about, don't you think?! But I give you that: when the first European arrived, Africa has been strongly underdeveloped, this is true even now. The reason for that lies much in the geology of the continent and the fact that in large parts the African landmass spreads out "vertically" and not "horizontally" like the Euro-Asian continent does. Why is this important? Because "horizontally", i.e. along the same geographic latitude, agricultural and technological knowledge tends to travel steadily from one culture to the next. If you understood how to grow oranges in China you knew how to do it in the Mediterranean as well, just because of similar climatic circumstances. Abel_N talks to Abel_N+1 and Cain_N to Cain_N+1 so to say. Now let's compare this to an ancient Southern African farmer around 1500 BC who wanted to bring his tomato-growing-knowledge into other regions of the continent, he ended up traveling north, had to overcome rivers as far as 25 km wide and 200m deep, endlessly thick forests, wild animals, sickness, deserts and other inhumane conditions until he finally reaches a spot on the "other side" of the equator with the same climatic and agricultural properties. But all along his way, anywhere else between those two regions his tomato-growing-knowledge would be useless 100% of the time, simply because tomatos don't grow in the savannah. So maybe given those preconditions it is impossible to create an advanced society that spreads across different climatic zones. And this gets even less likely if we take into account that Africa contains not one single animal species that could be tamed and used in agriculture or for traveling long distances. No one has ever convinced an antelope to plough a field. So when there is no horses, there is no effective ploughing and no Alexander the Great. On the other side our juicy orange could have traveled from China, which always had the most fertile soil one can dream of (nourished by Australian wind erosion of its outback), to the Mediterranean conveniently on the back of a horse, a camel or even a donkey. The ancient Americans lived under similar conditions before the Europeans arrived. They also had no idea of domestic animals like horses or donkeys. Most of them (estimated several thousands) then died quickly from a couple of diseases and viruses brought in by the Conquistadors long before they had the chance to actually meet an European in person.

Deo Hans "Europe still takes an enormous amount of resources and wealth out of Africa. Just think of French Total, Royal Dutch Shell or BP and how they used African oil to finance WW2 and to rebuild Europe again after WW2." Lets put WW2 aside as it was pre-decolonization of Africa. I would argue that what you are pointing to is just globalization and we are all exploiting each other. Would they be able to develop these resources all on their own? And again its a "some rich people" thing as most of us dont own said companies and dont reap profits from them. Currently Africa does not have much to offer besides natural resources. Most of the population is poorly educated and the infrastructure is lacking. Instability of some regions should also serve as a deterrent to outside investments. Should we stop trading with them and leave them in economic isolation? Or should we provide everything for them at our own expense (hand them everything on a silver tray)? "Slavery was only the prolog if you will. It's an ongoing systematic exploitation of a whole continent and the people who live there which lasts for more than 500 years." "In 1870, only 10 percent of Africa was under European control." Decolonization started in about 1950s. This is why in my very first point I was talking about 100-200 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scramble_for_Africa. Animal traction existed in North and South Africa long before the colonization. You seem to be right about the rest of the continent. www.africanafrican.com/folder12/african%20african%20american/tutankhamun/Starkey-HistoryAnimalTractioninAfrica-97-draft.pdf Geology isnt really anybodys fault. I guess some/most Europeans should whine about not being able to grow anything in the winter. (Personally I like to think that winter just forced us to be more creative and work harder in the warm period.)

I often say this on vlogs like this.... Many African nations rid itself of what they called European imperialism following WW2 as they often felt they could go it alone and do better for themselves. Over the years we have seen famine, AIDS pandemics, political corruption, failed economies, poor education, Asian communities expelled, white flight etc. as many of these nations have become basket cases. Then we hear the Liberal arguement that we once rules these nations and we are responsible or we are inhumane. The view that Europe should open its doors wide open and tax payers should fund housing, social care, medicine, education & social security, when it often doesn't have the infastructure in place to cope with its own internal demands.
