TIME STAMPS: 2:20 -- Tom explains the origins of the sling he's currently sporting, which traces back to his infamous failed attempt at dunking a basketball late last year. They also discuss some of Tom's childhood memories growing up in Ohio, what it was like being raised by immigrant parents, and his mother being an amazing storyteller and a natural comedian. They go on to talk about Netflix offering Tom a special when they heard he was Latino, doing full shows in Spanish on tour, and how challenging those sets were for him, using his second language. 12:19 -- Tom shares about his overdose on the date rape drug GHB when he was 18 and slipping into a short coma, as well as how much of that experience he's talked about over the years, how it has affected his perspective on drugs and alcohol since, and Jasmin shares her first experience taking ecstasy. They go on to discuss Tom's affinity for hip hop, the fact that 90% of the music he listens to is rap, his fascination for sampling, immersing himself in the genre and his friend comedian Russell Peters being a next-level hip hop fan. 22:43 -- Tom speaks on early days DJing for his college radio station and doing what he could to get hip hop more air-time while he was there. Tom's early day job writing transcripts for reality shows is mentioned, he's asked what advice he would have for comics who are trying to find decent daytime gigs, and they discuss the importance of obsession when it comes to finding success as a comedian. They also talk about Tom's relationship with his wife Christina Pazsitzky, how they met, and the 'Your Mom's House Podcast' that they've been producing together since 2011. 34:21 -- Tom is asked about his 2014 Netflix special 'Completely Normal' and they discuss comedians turning down big payouts to retain ownership of their own productions. They go on to talk about Steven Seagal's reputation as one of the biggest A-holes in the industry with Tom re-telling several of the outrageous stories he's heard. They also discuss Tom's 'Sup Kane!' story of him shouting to Big Daddy Kane getting out of his Limo. They go on to explore him later using the story in his stand-up, getting the chance to meet him at Russell Peters', and collaborating with BDK on 'Sup Kane!' merch. 45:43 -- Talib brings up Joe Rogan and him being one of the most influential voices of this generation. They discuss Talib taking issue with some of the things Joe has said over the years, Talib tells about when he finally met Joe and how he responded to Talib telling him he's said things over the years that didn't sit well with him. They discuss the interesting overlap of fans by association that artists sometimes share, being able to disagree on sensitive topics and still remain friends, and Tom expands on the story of how he became friends with DJ Maseo of De La Soul. 54:55 -- Tom is asked if it feels different to him when someone he respects takes issue with any of his jokes. They go on to discuss Tom saying, "you have the right to be offended by anything, but you don't have the right to do anything about it", how Netflix has mastered algorithms with their cover art and often strange write-ups, Tom's podcast buddy Bert Kreischer from '2 Bears 1 Cave' and their weight loss competition, Tom's hilarious bit 'I Saw A Fight' where he talks about the lack of "white guy solidarity" as well as Tom bringing up racism in his material. 1:08:13 -- Tom goes into his experience attempting to visit the Nike Factory Store in Portland and being told he couldn't shop there because he was an entertainer. He explains how the whole situation unintentionally turned him into an Adidas influencer and Talib then tells about his personal experience shopping there. Tom also speaks on his 'Ball Hog' bit where he talks about his friend giving fellatio to the Wu-Tang Clan, afterwards having some anxiety over members possibly being upset and tells what happened when he shared a flight with Method Man. 1:15:23 -- Talib brings up more from the 'Ball Hog' special when Tom mentions his father's quote of, "we all like watching black people have fun". They go on to discuss the notion of black joy being a counterpoint to black pain, Tom growing up admiring black culture, being an ally, encouraging people to manage expectations in life and pursue their dreams, Tom evaluating his trajectory as an artist every year, Tom's real concern for his comedic peers during quarantine, as well as getting a kick from his fans trolling Garth Brooks over social media.

Talib's voice is beautiful. Both in terms of content of his thoughts and the timber of his vocal output. The fact we can all listen to this for free is extraordinary. Cheers Tom and Talib.
Here we go mommies! Have been itching for another Tom/Talib sesh.

If tom loves hip hop then maybe he didn't know the difference either
I'm a big Tom Segura fan and this is the most likeable I've ever seen him.
The 1st time I saw Tom was when he opened for Russell Peters, he was wearing an Ol Dirty Bastard t-shirt & I had a feeling he was gonna be mad funny. He crushed and started headlining at the club shortly after, it's always dope to see comics come through right before they blow up and have those memories of seeing them when they aren't that well known.

That's an awesome memory. Can't wait till I see a comedian blow up. I saw slipknot open for powerman5000 before their first album was released. I've never seen a headliner get dusted so bad. It was a great concert.

@@dustinb1070 I have plenty of them... Seeing Ralphie May do almost 3 hours to a room of about 70 people on a Thursday while we just sat and smoked cigarettes/got drunk, Mike Birbiglia killing sitting in an empty seat in the sixth row and telling jokes for 15 minutes, Bill Burr asking me if their was another way to green room without going through showroom ( I walked him around back and he said " shit, I didn't mean for it to be this big of a deal ) Aziz Ansari during a snowstorm with only 50 people there and him yelling at some drunk dude about pronouncing Ghostface Killah wrong... I even held the door open for Talib when he showed up to watch Chappelle when they were in town for the documentary he did hahaha!!!
I grew up in a rural area listening to Mr. Kweli. Instantly knew he was on a different level. Great to see him evolve into the 21st century. Great to see him connect to the comedy world. Even the name is so great. Party people. People's party.
59:37 the most genuine laugh 😂

I just found this podcast because you interviewed Tom. I know this is probably sacrilegious but I have never heard any of Talib's music. So I listened to his conversation with Tom on Tom talks and downloaded Blackstar. A new fan of the music and the podcast. Grab as many comedians as you can they make for great podcast content.

Tom is where he is today for a lot of reasons. Being able to have the humility and intelligence to work with other native Spanish speakers on his sets and treat himself like a newcomer is one of the many reasons.

I love your show and also love the Joe Rogan podcast. Quality was one of the first 20 CD's I bought in high school and I started listening to Joe back from his first few episodes.
