What a classy actor he was, Cushing! Underrated only because he was associated with the horror genre.

He's so afraid that he did the unnecessary thing of poisoning the blade. Mensur is not a duel to the death, he didn't need to do that... but all must surrender to the PLOT!!

but as he well said like that: man do strange things under fear... and of course, it was done because he didn´t believe what he was doing... just only in absolutely rare occasions that a man will fight honorable... if he believes down to his soul what he is fighting for... being wrong or right it doesn´t matter, only if he believes...

This was in 1982/1983 when his career was tapering off due to health problems and a lack of roles that appealed to him. (It seems like he was still getting horror offers, but the movies offered struck him as increasingly distasteful). Even so, you'll notice that he's in a handful of scenes in one location that could have been shot in a day or two.

Thanks for the upload, I'm binging on these at the moment! I love the premise of Tales of the Unexpected, and they featured some terrific actors, but all too often the stories just aren't clever enough. When the twist finally comes, it's usually a 'So what' moment. A shame because the potential is there for some really superb self contained, classic short dramas.

The twist is that the two guys are elderly Nazi (or Nazi-adjacent if not actual Nazi party members) war criminals still in prison. The narrator seems somewhat repentant of his crimes and accepting of his punishment, and traces his cowardice in working with the Nazis to his cowardice in poisoning the blade for the duel in his cadet days.
