Tales of the Okefenokee (1968) - Professionally-Filmed Sample Reel, c. 1971

Ойын-сауық

The unedited, watermark-free rip of the classic footage is finally out! This film contains shots of every scene in the ride save for the Crow Quartet's greeting and the arsenal cave. The audio appears to be an original part of the film (note the fuzzy quality), although both Crow Quartet songs are pitched too high for some reason. The lighting you see in this footage is the result of some specialized arrangement involving use of the ride building's work lights, and does not represent the colored gels that were used to illuminate the scenes under normal circumstances. Also note that several animations, such as Mr. Fox's vibrating hands in the kidnapping scene and the arms of the drumming rabbit in the washboard band, were not functioning for some reason or another during the off-period most of the footage was shot during. Special thanks to Skip Elsheimer and A/V Geeks for preserving this wonderful film, along with over 25,000 others!

    God i LOVE the way that mr fox and mr bear’s legs animated when theyre running away from the bees. The crows’ mouths unhinging in such a stilted manner, the water melon’s entire upper halves moving outwards, i think the way these things move is so hilarious and charming. Can definitely tell they were on a budget. Its so great to see them from different angles too, so used to only having the photos of these scenes. Love this ride

    The Okee redesign required a pretty hefty budget, actually! By non-Disney standards, those animated figures were top-notch stuff at the time of their creation. On the subject of the ride's primitive animation, I think my favorite examples would have to be the pink puppeteer rabbit's head jolting around like he's being tortured with a voodoo doll, Fox and Bear in the fishing hole _incrementally_ leaning forward into a gravity-defying Smooth Criminal tilt, and the horrifying snapping motion and possessed unison of the carrots. Animations I think were actually pretty decent include the head of the cow, the head of the rabbit in my profile picture (the one controlling the Mr. Fox marionette), and Mr. Fox's very subtle "quivering" jaw in the ghost scene.

    Wow, I just love the whole psychedelic 1960's appeal of this very quaint ride. It really reflects the style of its time, right down to the character styling and music composition. This is one of my favourite dark rides - I don't know why, it is probably just the charming way the effects feel both ahead of their time and sometimes cheaply executed.

The only actual work I'm doing here is creating pet projects such as audio mixes and that still-outdated queue model I need to finish revisions for. The "uncanny valley" factor of the Okefenokee is what got me interested in the ride in the first place. Most of the character designs were cute in their original acrylic forms as illustrated by Art Lozzi, but more often than not they didn't translate perfectly to animated figures built under the technological limitations of the late sixties. Many of the models suffered from bizarre body proportions, unflattering fur texture, and confusing facial expressions. The carrots in particular stand out as the absolute worst things ever made, pretty much. On a related note, the reason my profile picture is the face of the yellow puppeteer rabbit in particular is because he's always stuck out to me as being one of the only "cute" rabbits in the attraction, not being a victim of any of the detractors I mentioned previously in my opinion.

    Did the crows have the same problem like the rabbits fur? Was the Okees water soapy as seen in the silver 1967 film? This was a bit of a dumb question but what if you swam in the okee’s water? Where the size of the figures huge or a bit small? What could the interior of the okee smelled like? Was the okee considered a family dark ride? Or did teens go to the ride often? What if the okee exist for a few more years until the late 1990s? Was the ending of the okee stuck with boats at one point as seen in the castaway kids footage (Shows at the end boats stuck)? How where bull boats operated?

  • @okefenokee_rabbit

    @okefenokee_rabbit

    The crows' feathers appear to have been made of felt, as opposed to whatever types of fabric were used for the characters with fur. The crows might not have suffered as much from the humidity as the furred characters because of this, but I really have no idea. The Okee's water only would have been soapy along the ending scene circa 1967 and '68. After the bubble machine was removed, it wouldn't really have made sense for there to be soapy water anywhere. If you tried to swim in the Okee water, you would: a. Have to be a very tiny goblin-like person b. Come up covered in filth, because the water was probably filled with an accumulation of sludge, pieces of garbage, and cigarette butts by the end of each day I've seen numerous accounts of Monster having a very distinct scent to it - something like dirty water and rotting wood. I would imagine the Okee had the exact same scent. The Okefenokee was definitely a general-audiences type of ride. The air conditioning was a big draw, and teenagers in particular liked it because it (sometimes) provided a secluded place where they could make out, although this was presumably only possible on days when the park was very empty. The Okee would have needed a massive overhaul to survive past 1980; something on the same impressive scale as Monster. Imagine if AVG, for some bizarre reason or another, had opted to reuse the Br'er Rabbit characters instead of coming up with something new entirely. Everything in the ride still would have been thrown out just like in real life, and the scenes, art style, character designs, and soundtrack still would have been drastically changed as well. This is basically the only way the Okefenokee could have lived on. SFOG needed something totally fresh in that building; a few minor improvements here and there wouldn't even have begin to cut it. Even if the Okee had survived until the late nineties as a modern audio-animatronic dark ride, any video recording would be of the upgraded version anyway. The worst thing about this situation is that the ride definitely would have been replaced by some garbage like Scooby Doo or Looney Tunes in 1999 or so, as opposed to something made with passion and artistry like Monster Plantation in 1981. The boats probably only backed up at the end of the ride under two conditions: a. The ride happened to be particularly busy b. Loading operations were too slow for whatever reason The Okefenokee's boats were held in place at the loading queue by a gate in the trough on either side of the platform. When the gate swung to the side, the boats were carried forward through the trough by way of the water current alone. There weren't any mechanical parts in the boats, not counting the wheel-shaped bumpers that prevented them from spinning around. They were quite literally just fiberglass tubs that floated along at whatever speed the number of people inside of them allowed for.

    The Okefenokee crows could very well have been based on the Dumbo crows, but I suppose there really is no definitive answer. All of the characters in the ride were most likely designed by Hanna-Barbera artist Art Lozzi, and knowing that several of his concept illustrations for Tales of the Okefenokee were indeed references to several of the old Disney storybooks based on Song of the South, it's likely that they were.

    Whether or not a kid would have been creeped out while riding the Okefenokee largely depended on age, I guess. If I had personally been around to experience the Okefenokee at the age of five or so, I probably would have been horrified nearly every second of the way through. If I had ridden it around the age of ten, though, I might have been vaguely unnerved by a few things every now and then, but otherwise unphased. It's also important to note that while we may view Tales of the Okefenokee as being quite odd overall, during the late sixties and early seventies it was stylistically modern and technologically impressive, not only greatly resembling the colorful, inoffensive cartoon designs of the era (and with a modern sound to its music to boot), but also being quite cool from an engineering standpoint as well. (These qualities, however, definitely weren't holding up by the late seventies, so I'm sure the ride ended up scaring more and more kids as the years went by, especially after the terrible cosmetic overhaul of 1976.) One instance of absolute proof that the ride did indeed end up traumatizing a lot of young kids can be found in the 1972 audio recording I have on my channel, in which you can hear some kid screaming in the distance at one point, presumably at the carrots.

  • @okefenokee_rabbit

    @okefenokee_rabbit

    4 жыл бұрын

    I'm not really sure how to structure a reply to such a broad question, so I'll just make a bulleted list of random observations regarding the 1967 version: - The queue song seems to imply that early versions of the kidnapping and ghost scenes existed within the attraction prior to the revamp, presumably in the same spots their Krofft successors would occupy beginning in 1968. - The June 1967 issue of Southern Living Magazine, which features many never-realized concept sketches for SFOG, contains an illustration of riders in the Okee floating past a scene of the tar baby from the Br'er Rabbit stories. Assuming this actually made it into the ride, it probably would have been located where the puppet show was placed for the overhaul. - The "wheelbarrow scene" was located in what would become the cow-milking scene in 1968, and the most likely reason behind the set-up is that Mr. Fox was meant to have fainted at the sight of the mock-ghost and was being carried back into their cave in a wheelbarrow by Mr. Bear. - In the original version of the arsenal cave, Fox and Bear were probably meant to have been plotting some devilish scheme or another, and there may or may not have been foreboding voiced "wind" if the queue song is anything to go by. - Fox and Bear almost certainly appeared in the original "dark swamp" scene that was retooled into the storm for the '68 season. Not only does the queue song bring up the duo being equipped with lanterns, maps, charts, and traps during this section, but the Mr. Fox figure seen on the cover of the June 1967 issue of Southern Living magazine is holding what is clearly a sheet of paper, and what could a sheet of paper in this context possibly be aside from some chart of sorts? The theoretical Mr. Bear that would have appeared alongside Mr. Fox here likely held rabbit traps. - In the original ending scene, Fox and Bear (both entirely static) were seen being "chased away" by a line of rabbit kids proceeding toward them. The most likely scenario here is that the pair had been defeated by the rabbits so many times by that point that they were terrified at the sight of even a small handful of unarmed bunnies. Strangely, to the left of the rabbits playing instruments at the very end of the ride, another Mr. Bear figure (and possibly another Mr. Fox figure as well) could be seen. - Overall, it seems as though the primary reasons for the 1967 version's poor reception were its unimpressive animation, ugly character designs, and seemingly-poor ability to convey a coherent story.

    I wonder what exactly was the reason for how all this turned out. Like the different ways of filming (one on a boat with riders, one filming the scenes from different angles, and possibly other ones following riders), exclusions of parts of the ride, the inclusion of audio from the ride over scenes, how the owls from the beginning are put together with the ghost scene, the way the audio sounds, and maybe more. Do you have a theory or any more ideas about this? (though I think you mentioned in another comment why the “warning crows” are included and the ones from the beginning aren’t).

  • @okefenokee_rabbit

    @okefenokee_rabbit

    2 жыл бұрын

    The film was shot from a multitude of different angles because it was presumably meant to be a compiled source of Okefenokee footage for use in promotional films. The whole ride needed to be filmed so that later filmmakers would have plenty of shots from each scene to work with. (Although the guys who filmed the sample reel still didn't end up getting any of the arsenal scene for some reason.) The contradictions of the ride's chronology, such as the transition from the owls to the ghost scene, were simply done because it didn't really matter how things were ordered. Once again, this film was made as a grab-bag of footage to be copied and edited down, rather than an accurate portrayal of the ride. Also, the first two sets of crows didn't both need to be filmed because they were virtually identical to each other. They happened to film the warning crows rather than the greeting crows, and so the greeting crows simply didn't need to be captured due to not being sufficiently different.

The footage is public domain simply because Six Flags never bothered to copyright Tales of the Okefenokee (or any of their early attractions, for that matter). I couldn't tell you how much the carrots may or may not have deteriorated over the years; I don't know the specifics of the exact material they were made from. I have no idea what you're referring to with that third question. All I can say is that the boats in the Okefenokee travelled faster than the ones in Monster, because the Okee's water current was stronger. (Okee was four minutes long while Monster is five.) The original Save the Rabbit song was almost definitely still used after the fire; it wouldn't have made sense for the watermelons to even be there to begin with if the song had been removed.

    Outside of Disneyland, theme park animation circa 1968 could only be executed via simple, non-computerized methods; the Okee in particular using both pneumatic and rotary devices controlled by basic electric motors. Because attempting to create animated figures that could have accommodated such space-consuming devices in more than just a few places would have proven mostly useless, it only makes sense for the characters to have been restricted to only one or two simple movements. Actual animatronics were still in the future back then, and in fact, I'm pretty sure Monster Plantation was the very first true animatronic dark ride to open outside of a Disney park.
