Tales of Assassination of the Aged

Tales of Assassination of the Aged
News of the Times Episode 347 | 1893 & 1897
Today we look at two cases where the intended victim was of more senior years.
The first case from 1893 is a terrible crime using an axe on the woman running the shop. The police took the case very seriously and managed to trace the suspect to Belgium and extradite him - a feat rather more difficult in Victorian Times. The police and Home Office were unswerving.
The second case from 1897 Ireland caught our attention right away. Seventy some Dennis Kelly is still happily running his farm of 6 acres and lives in his house with his son. The father has taken on some domestic help as his wife has died and he needs help. The son suspects that there is a relationship between the two and that they are planning to cut him out of his inheritance. A highly cruel and torturous murder of a son on his father occurs due to jealous suspicions.
Two Tales of assassination of the aged is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

The son, in the second story, got his just deserts. I can't imagine killing a parent or anyone for money. How evil can one get. You did a great job relating the story. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you - we thought it was really interesting. And the manner in which he killed him - and then to think he could get away with it. The whole thing is so very odd. Thank you, as always, for your kind support!🙏

It appears the unfortunate Mrs Pearcey was murdered for her money and goods in her shop!! What a HORRIBLE way to die!! Poor Dennis Kelly was not just brutally murdered!! He was betrayed by his OWN son, nephew, and ex friend!! His so-called "friend" even egged the others on to commit the murder!! The three culprits should have got charged with murder, NOT manslaughter!! Well done on another FANTASTIC video, Robin!! 👏💕💞👍❤

Thank you - just apalling. We could not believ it when we read it. The first case to us was interesting just from the standpoint of what it says about the times. He is a hawker - but does not speak English? How does that work? And the police tracing him to Belgium and extraditing him form there - not so easy in Victorian England - we think there is more ot this story. The second story - just horrible. You can picture it happening by the descriptions. Poor man. We still do not really understand the bizarre motivation. Even if he did manange to have another son at 73 or so - the property would still go to the first born? That relationship must have been toxic. The two lived n the same small house together. Poor man. 😔

@@newsofthetimes The given motive in this Irish case, I agree, makes little sense at all. It makes me wonder whether, with a young woman so much in the house - and perhaps on terms of some familiarity with the father, however innocent - the unmarried son (and perhaps the nephew and friend as well) were motivated by more than simple greed. There's no mention of whether the nephew and friend were married, but testosterone + repression can be an explosive combination.

@@bethanyherrera4787 Great point! The woman, apparently was in her late 40's, mid 50's. Quite possibly past the age of childbirth anyway (back then). The father and son lived n the same house. We think the real reason was his anxiousness to get the property. With his father clearly hale and hearty and possibly lasting anther 20 years, and the woman who cleaned seeing him everyday, poisoning was possibly out of the question, because he would be spotted. We think the jealousy thing was a feint. 🤔

@@newsofthetimes Yes, why WOULD the police go all the way to Belgium to extradite Mrs Pearcey's murderer?! It must've been expensive, plus it would have been like looking for a needle in a haystack once they got there!! Bearing in mind there was no Interpol back then too!! I agree!! In the Kelly case, the motivation was greed!! I also imagine that there was no love lost between Father and son!! I'll bet they didn't have the most loving relationship way before this incident happened anyway!!🤔🤔

In the second story in same ways it amazes me. On one hand justice in the UK can sometimes be mind numbing harsh and awful but in this case it was far too lenient for these terrible men. Of course to be fair, the judiciary over here has now become quite fascist so there is no telling what horrors they have in store for this country. Insanity reigns supreme!! Thank you for another well researched story, much appreciated.

We agree - we found the punishment very lenient given the cruelty. That story took place in Ireland. It was the whole question of pre-meditation - to us, gatherng a crowd together wth cans and hanging out where the father will pass is pre-meditation. We also find the motivation behind all this bizarre. There as, by all accounts, nothing at all going on between the farmer and the housemaid. 🤔

Thatis a great description! We think the whole 'jealousy because of the housemaid' was a feint. We think he just wanted his hands on the property that much sooner and that he would much more difficulty killing his father with the housemaid coming in every day and watching. 🤔

Carrickmacross isn’t far from me so I found this story so sad and interesting , the poor father but how strange to murder him with so many people involved and presume you’d get away with it perhaps he wasn’t the full shilling as my father used to say Yes , sentence too lenient especially for McMahon , thanks 🙏

Thank you - a very sad case indeed. We know he lived wth his father. Our theory is that he was greedy for ownership of what he saw as his birthright and wanted to hurry it along. With the new housemaid in daily, poisonng his father became difficult. We think, ultimately, he was a coward and required the other people around him to encourage and help him to do the deed. Yes - how on eath did he think he could get away with it? So very tragic for the father. There is no good way to die, but we find this just horrific, and as you say, quite sad. 😔
