Talaria Sting Motor VS Sur Ron Motor Inside Look!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Working on a really cool project with the GritShift Talaria Sting. This bike's name is Franky, why? Because we are testing some of our own custom-made motor parts in the Talaria along with some Sur Ron components to make the first real Sur Ron killer! So yes this will be a Frankenstein build and who knows it could be brilliant or a total fail!

GritShift is a highly specialized and precisely dedicated place for real extreme dirt junkies, guys, and gals who are looking to spend every single minute of their free time muddy, happy, and off-road. This project originated from Dirt Legal, our sister company, which is dedicated to legalizing off-road vehicles. When they realized that quality parts for dirt bikes and UTVs are very hard to come by, GritShift was born.

Just noticed the Sting’s interior casing is painted black. That lowers the emissivity of the aluminum surface so it absorbs and dispels heat, as opposed to reflecting it back onto the motor. Nice touch!

It can be any light color but not shiny, ie. mat-color (absorbing), but the out box of motor is dark which has influence of few degrees higher. And just half shiny. I would repaint it all outside "silver or white or aluminum -shiny".
Thanks for making this video. I really wanted to see the internals of both side by side.
Love the info. Thank you.
Great video my friend keep up the good work
valuable info sir, keep going...
Very thorough presentation so I brought all these thumbs ups for ya algorithms 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍💯
Awesome video.. finally answered one my questions..👌🏽👌🏽
Thanks Appreciate what you just did here great Info.
That’s mad you guys dig into that! If my bike was apart for that long but I’d loose my mind 😅
Shocking how these motors are priced so high for what they are. Small, puny magnets SCREWED ON! Neodymium magnets are vulnerable to centrifugal forces because they are made with soft, powdery metals. Screwing them into position puts extra pressure on these thin magnets dramatically increasing the possibilities of catastrophic failure. Also, the windings are loose, increasing the risk or ware on the cable coating from vibrations and bumps of riding (especially off road) leading to shorting of the phases.

I agree. It's almost like they've tried their hardest to make it as fragile as possible. A bit like planned obsolescence. The qs165 is a lot cheaper and yet a much better motor.
Valuable information, thank you, but I have a question, which of the engines is more powerful and has fewer breakdowns?
You guys should make more content 👍 Still can't decide if that gearbox is worth it over the SurRon, the motor sure seems closely designed.
It would be nice to see the Talaria MX4 interior permanent magnet (IPM) vs the Sur Ron surface permanent magnet (SPM) motor. The Talaria’s MX4 “R” IPM motor’s rotor, with the magnets imbedded inside the stack of laminations.
Love my new sting. Just waiting for the upgrades. They here yet lol.
Is it possible to convert a talaria to be belt driven with a Luna or sur ron shop kit? Not for off road riding, just want a silent street bike. Thanks.
Yes you had it backwards talaria is an encoder motor surron uses hall sensors
OK so in your opinion which motor do you think android to givebox specifications which one do you think was the last longer or take more abuse
The talaria magnet is the same style as for the Zero motorcycles motor. The magnet field is tangent to the axis and the sensor is probably a SIN/COS encoder. These are more precise to tell the exact rotor position to the controller. However they are often pain in the ass to calibrate. There is no keyway on it because whatever the angle it is on teh rotor shaft, the offset angle is compensated when it is calibrated i think.

Ya I've been saying this the talaria motor uses a encoder just as the zero motorcycles do. Its supposed to be better newer tech but it's limiting options for controllers and upgrades.

@@MotoAlias I just watched a video on a Talaria with a bac8000 but I know that the Talaria has an encoder motor and the ASI controllers are designed for hall sensor motors, so what is going to be the process to make this work.
@MotoAlias
2 жыл бұрын
@@LarryRichelli I think they're removing the encoders and putting hall sensors in. Personally I don't think this is the way to go. I'd like to see a controller use the encoder motor as is. I've reached out to far driver controllers they run encoder motors but they need a motor to sync to.
@kmschwem

Why would it need calibrated? There’s no TDC to worry about. Used for driving the different motor phases?
What about water proofing? Any water protection there?
Can you do this with IPM motor.
Which is better stock vs upgraded?
I wonder could you put the hall sensor in the talaria motor and then run a bac4000? Not that you'd really need to if sintech really works and If we're able to still order them from Russia then that's the go to I'd say... but having cheaper options would be nice... I've reached out to far driver they can run encoder motors but they need a motor.

@@gritshift the plan is putting hall sensors in the talaria motor? Did you see dirtybike uploaded a video uses a bac8000, I wonder if that's what they did or if they got it to work another way??? What are your thoughts on far driver controllers?

Hello GritShift, Can you tell me how you get the black ring (ferrite ring for hallsensor) of the shaft? I have a similar Motor and must change the bearings. I have to remove the ring, but it’s glued and i am afraid to break it. Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer. I would call you, but I'm from Germany. I was afraid that removing this ring would not be easy. I would like to completely equip my motor with new low-friction bearings. I cannot pull the bearing off without removing this ring. worst case scenario, do you know where to buy these rings?

I did it 😊! It works with a puller, rust remover and little bit heat from a heat gun. Thank you very much for your advices.
How many pole pair??
that would be great if you could get a Gaussmeter in your hand and measure the maximum flux of the magnets. On both of thwe X motor i have, both measure 4250 gauss max when the rotor is out of the stator. also could you measure the number of winding strands in paralle per phases? I have measured 24 strands of 21 gauge for each phase (equivalent to gauge 7). The phase to phase inductance is about 50uH. The DC resistance phase to phase (manually measured with 4 wire kelvin method using Fluke 189 milivoltmeter and Xantrex XFR 100-12 current source: Yellow to Green: 10.158miliohms Yellow to Blue: 9.907miliohms Blue to Green: 10.098miliohms

measure the circumference of a coil multiplied by the number of windings and multiplied by number of connected coils. then divide resistance value for that gauge by the length. from your resistance values i get 7.18m per strand this is just a way of confirming if you are right
Will you or can you load up the Talaria motor with ferrofluid like you see some hub motors being modded with?
@yodab.at1746
2 жыл бұрын
Not sure why you'd need to with the stator on the outside and rotor being spun in the centre. The stator has good contact with the case, which has fins, for better heat dissipation than a hub motor which only dissipates heat to the centre and axle.
Hi Grit Shift Team, I have a question. I just bought a Talaria Sting second hand and it seems like the bash guard was dented inwards pretty extensively. I took it off and the phase wires (the orange ones) have some minor cuts through the insulation from being pressed on by the bash guard. I can see the wires inside some of them. How would I go about fixing this? How worried should I be? I slapped on some electrical tape for now, is that enough? Thanks!

@@gritshift Thank you for the advice! I’ll get on it ASAP. Appreciate you guys. Out of curiosity, what would be the course of action needed if the phase wires themselves were cut? What if they are a little frayed? Do you need to replace the whole motor?

it is, talaria power tech (their manufacturing company) has been making the motors for surron since the start, it's why there is a lawsuit between surron and talaria.
