    There are a number of other female virtuoso bass players. Tal Wilkenfeld's appeal is not from being any type of virtuoso, but, rather, from being a bassist who has "chops," but also substantial, intelligent musical taste.

  • @Gregorypeckory

    @Gregorypeckory

    3 жыл бұрын

    Frank Zappa was asked "how do you get the London Symphony Orchestra to play your music?" He answered, "you pay them". "But they're a pretty prestigous orchestra". "you pay them a lot". Tal is great, so don't misinterpret this, but Vinnie is an incredible session player that has made a great living because he's good enough to command a high price. He seems to really enjoy the gigs I've seen him play, but "the best in the business play with her" doesn't tell you anything, except that she's an honorable person whose checks don't bounce, and successful and intelligent enough to spring for the best players.

  • @somersetcace1

    @somersetcace1

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Gregorypeckory Actually, you're wrong about that. Don't get me wrong, he gets paid, but Vinnie found her. Not the other way around and he basically got her the Jeff Beck gig, Dweezle Zappa and several others. A lot of famous musicians have taken her under their wing because they see something in her that warrants it. It's not all about the money.

  • @Gregorypeckory

    @Gregorypeckory

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@somersetcace1 I didn't intend to imply anything about how they met, nor that Vinnie doesn't appreciate her talents, nor recommend her for great gigs, all of which I don't doubt. But I stand by pushing back on the implication that the fact that Vinnie was on the gig is proof of her greatness; it is proof that he was hired and showed up, because everyone involved is a pro musician, and they care about their reputation. Obviously Vinnie is unlikely to be hired by hacks (probably not many could afford him anyway), but you have to judge musicians on how they sound, not who they hired for a gig.

    I'm impressed by how much coverage she's getting with that 3 fingered fret board technique. Reminds me of Django Reinhart. She's very musical and has obviously been influenced by some of the great contemporary fusion players. She's still young and growing as a person. She'll be an even more mature player and musician in 10 years. Wow, to be backed by Vinnie C. at such a young age. It'll take years just to appreciate that fact.

    I love my country but our culture has gone down the toilet. If it was here it would be Miley Cyrus or Justin Beiber or the like. I hesitate to say that they have 0 talent because they have a lot more money than I do but it's so depressing to look at the charts and see RAP dominating here and one has to look elsewhere for music of substance. That's why Marty Friedman moved to Japan and if had the money he has I'd probably do the same thing. I'll expand on my statement from the original post. I wish they would play good music on any medium over here, let alone TV.

    Funny he mentions bass as an "unusual" instrument for a young lady--I've been teaching Middle School strings for almost 2 decades, and some of my best bass players have been girls.

    stringendo1 I'm an old man now and have been playing bass since 1972. Before that I started playing piano at age 6 and finished when I got to do my A-MUS. I taught myself how to play bass. The point I'm getting to is, that I was surrounded by more talented musicians who were all GIRLS. Wilko is just a presenter and I doubt he's been anything else.

    As much as this album exceeded my every expectation, her second release was a complete disappointment. Tal has so much vision, skill, and passion that I wonder why she felt digressing into folk, pop and vocals was the right shift. I truly hope she finds her way back to jazz.

    it is unusual. Playing this kind of music so close to the bridge for so long takes a lot of endurance. I'm an in-shape guy who can barely do this stuff. That is why there aren't many attractive female bassists, whereas there are a ton of great looking guitar shredders.

    she's really good. i think she or some engineer has to take that seemingly muted on her bass. crank it up a little, more treble, slide the equalizer up on every thing. her bass playing should be more foreground. its not just this performance but in most of her performances live its a shame her playing is turned down. yeah yeah i know bass players are supposed to be more background but if it was ok for Jaco to play full blast why not her and others?

    "Unusual instrument for a young lady"? I thought bass was what girls played? If there's ONE girl in a band and she's not the singer, she's the bass player. Just look at Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Pixies, APC and Ash. Then there's session players like Debra Killings (Outkast, TLC, Monica and more).
