Taking Over as the Ship's Chief Engineer | Seaman Vlog
In this episode, I'm going to show you the handing over procedures when a crew member joins the ship. It's a very important procedure in order to bring the new guys up to speed on the ship's situation.

As someone who has no real connection with the maritime industry, I can't help but be inspired and amazed at the life that you live onboard, and taking the time to show that side. I can't commend you highly enough on the quality of your videos. Well done.

B Smith Well said, friend! I wanted to say exactly that! (Hmm...great minds think alike, it’s said!)
Chief, I just discovered your videos and I enjoy watching them. There is just something about the sea! Our experiences were quite different. I was in the US Navy from 1971 until 1978 in electronics. Even though our jobs were quite different, I did get to visit many of the same ports. I can tell that you are a very intelligent and diligent man. It would have been great to have known you. I did get to visit the Philippines twice, Subic Bay both times and all together spend about 6 months there. Be careful and have wonderful voyages.
There's such a lot on KZread regarding flying and those involved which is great. It's seriously brilliant that you can give us the insight from a mariner's perspective on day to day life. I hope that as you progress with your vlog we will experience the experiences of other members of the crew, for example, the duties of the deck officers, and ordinary seamen. (Though they aren't in the least"ordinary!") This should be shown on prime time TV . Thank you so much.
I like the way you narrate every thing with rgard to the vessel, the duties and responsibilities, etc. Quite a lot to learn from your motivational words despite being away from family and friends for months together. Eagerly awaiting your videos.
I used to be an engineer with The Holland America Line and never get enough of your video presentations - many thanks and have a safe journey.
CHIEF you rock. Especially your voice is soothing and your style of speaking is very nice.
Chief Makoi, Your English is soo beautiful and perfect and your videos are so beautifully edited ..It's such a visual treat to watch your videos..May the Lord Bless you and Your family...

Hello Chief, having worked on defense contracts & commercial aircraft most of my life, I truly understand the phrase "lots & lots of documentation". Stay safe. ✌
We NEED a video giving the career path for working on ships - passenger & work ships. Tell about unions, countries crews come from, & what 'doing a contract' means. Thanxs
Your videos make me fee very proud of the thousands of Filipino seamen on whom the global shipping industry depends. Salute!

If I recall correctly 25% of all mariners worldwide are Filipinos.
You have a great eye. I really like your episodes. Thank you for letting us see you life.
Great quality videos "Chief Engineer"......many of my Filipino relatives are seafarers and one is ranked at Captain although semi-retired now. I forward your videos to my Filipino relatives for inspiration. I am a foreigner in the Philippines and with my filipina wife have a 60 foot fishing boat to create jobs for a fishing village.
Chief, your videos with your descriptions and your eloquence all make it an absolute joy to watch.
well done, thanks for explaining the importance of accounting for all the mechanical equip. and personnel under your control. and the safe operation of the ship and crew!
Chief, The way you explain and clarity is fantastic.
Chief another excellent blog look forward to your next adventure.
One of the most interesting vlogs I watched .I'm becoming your fan Chief.Just subscribed to your channel.Kudos!
New subscriber ... REALLY enjoying your channel .... Learning to MUCH about a seafarer's life !! Very interesting to me ..... "Thank you for all your GREAT content that you share with us all !!!!! Rick (Massachusetts, USA)
These videos are so good, I'm drawn in to binge watch. Good job, Chief--you've got a real talent for this! If I lived near a port of call, I'd try to meet you sometime! But, I'm in the Midwest US...
Hello chief .....i enjoy your channel ....and the memories IT brings back....i wish You many safe trips ....and thank you 👍😁
I always love watching and learning of your interesting way of life at sea, your wonderful personality and professionalism are always outstanding. I really enjoyed watching your video of y'all fishing together over the side of the ship, all your smiles and the large basket of fresh caught fish made that part of your story most enjoyable for me. Thank You Chief for sharing your life with with all of us. :)
Here we go again, another really GREAT video...thanks Chief!!!!!!!
Really appreciate your effort bringing life at sea to us. It is my wish to join soon. Currently in the maritime academy and I hope to make it through... Salute
I admire your desire to join this ship, and the desire to move up to electronic engine control systems. Being savvy and experienced in old schools systems is awesome because is where the fundamentals are, but waniting to move to better technology is also great because gives you more security for the future and then you can go back and forth between engine management systems to suit your desires. Pretty much to write your own ticket. I did the same in aviation and I'm enjoying the ride, and enjoying companies knocking on my door asking if I wanted to jump ship. So being unemployed is not in my future, as long as health is good. Life is good. Fair winds.
New subscriber here. Learning a lot about your profession and life on board a ship. Take care and I wish you and all our countrymen on various ships all over the world safe travels. God bless.
So much Love for this video! God bless Chief!
Such a huge responsibility ! Congrats !
This is a remarkable channel. The chief is astonishingly articulate, and tells a story well. How many of us carry his responsibilities, i.e., the lives of twenty men, a vessel and a cargo worth tens of millions of dollars, a husband and father, a mentor and teacher. Bravo.
Chief you are good at this...keep up the good work.
I would love to get into the shipping industry after discovering Chief here, such a great boss he is..
Your videos are amazing in quality and very interesting. Thank you.
Chief, Your english is almost perfect compare to our Captain. So simple and well understood 👌
Love your gentle quiet spirit.

A gentle spirit is something that is passed down from one seaman to another. You won't grow old on a boat by being inconsiderate. Inconsiderate of what you say, inconsiderate when preparing coffee. The things you say and the things you do to others; ripples and amplifies while on a boat.
The quality of your videos is outstanding! I really enjoy watching them.

I've said the same : they're very polished and a lot of work has gone into them. Just a mundane scene might have 4 different camera angles, with edited shots from each. Like you say it is very high quality.
This Blog Is a Blessing for Me! Thanks you Chief!! :)

Hey Chief, Unsure how I happened upon your channel, but so glad I did. My Father has been in the Merchant Navy, predominantly sailing foreign flag and on tankers, forever. He was on cargo liners in the 70s, joined Sanko Line in the early 80s, progressed through the Engineering ranks until achieving his Chief Engineer's certificate with Teekay. He's now with Hoegh, and I couldn't be more proud of him. Why? He gave me a life of wonder from an early age. Each summer holiday we spent with him, on his ship, wherever it may've been. One Christmas holiday we were him (awaiting loading off Bonne), we were involved in an accident that ended up shaping a number of the SOLAS conventions. We sailed through the Shatt al-Arab between the Iran/Iraq wars. I walked around Basrah in 1989. We went to India before it became somewhat gentrified. I've sailed through the St Lawrence Seaway, through the Thousand Islands, and throughout the Great Lakes. I've seen my brother spew in Fujairah, pulled a tripwire in Khor al-Zubayir, walked around like a millionnaire in Kandla and fished in Jebel Ali. My Dad has given me an amazing life. Nobody I know has seen what I have. I met my (now ex) wife, and became a step-father and father as a direct consequence of this job. I live in Rotterdam. Had Dad not done this, I wouldn't have been here. Simple fact. Me now? I'm 41, and a shipbroker. I have a ship loading in Rotterdam for India right now. This afternoon I confirmed a ship loading in Ain-Sokhna into the Persian Gulf. I adore the scale of what I do, my experience and memories of what my Dad has given me propel me. I am dealing day-to-day with the likes of Norden, COSCO, Oldendorff, Clipper, and it's bloody wonderful. Shipping is the most infectious career, in whatever form it comes. It's not the money, certainly not me. It's the feeling of being responsible for people. And this is how I can do it. Brilliant channel. Much love.

another great video chief it is nice to have you back. If it is possible could show some of the work the deck department handles. On these bulk carriers do you ever have a problem with rodents since you haul different grains? Will this ship fit through the Panama canal? thank you again I look forward to your voyage
Amazing video mate.

This was one of the most interesting videos I’ve seen on ships. Consider me a fan. I’d like to ask you some questions some time as I am a 40 year old transitioning into a life on the sea.
