Taking on the Hammers with GRDLOC and The Trail Reaper

The Hammers in Johnson Valley is home to one of the most difficult land races on the planet, King of the Hammers. We decided it was time to test GRDLOC out on some of these iconic obstacles.
Teaming up with Scott Durkin, @TheTrailReaper, we tried our hands at Chocolate Thunder, Jack Hammer North, and the infamous Back Door. Featuring some awesome action from buggies and more.

    at a glance, I couldn't imagine that there were rocks where the Grdloc can't climb up. as we saw, the weight matters, that new rig jumped up easily on the gigantic rocks. love the Trailreaper LJ as well with it's 43'' MT stickies. but Grdloc is mesmerizing me!!!

    In no way am I implying these trails are easy, and rigs are SWEET!!! But in all the videos I'm watching - the MT baja pro's don't seem to be all they're cracked up to be. Traction looks marginal at best other than at sand hollow, which anything grips well at sand hollow.

    How come y’all don’t run RCVs in your axles vs u joints ?

  • @parkeryj3135

    @parkeryj3135

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jku Stockaphobia when you’re turning the axle doesn’t lose integrity. Your more likely to break ujoints at full lock but with rcv it’s the same strength everywhere

  • @RockstarGarage

    @RockstarGarage

    4 жыл бұрын

    We have run RCV on builds and some do have them. We run YUKON super joints in GRDLOC because they are not a standard u joint they are a CNC chromoly joint that’s rebuildable and strong as hell and easy to maintain. Check em out

    My 92 yj Jeep I understand , that’s why I was wondering why they don’t have RVC but instead they have the weaker u joints (at least at full lock like you mentioned)

  • @RockstarGarage

    Thats what i thought. I’ve seen it crawled with ease. Yes during the hammers when its dug out. I wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t see it. It’s more of a wheelbase thing. Longer is better. Not saying these rigs are short.

    In your cause 8 bolt fails b4 the spline does fail safely, which is good design. Your spline is harder than grade 5 or 8 bolt.

    how come the axle splines don't hve a starter or actual key way to take the load & save the splines. The beg of spline could b 1/4 or 1/8 turn diff then rest or raised or lowered section or 3 key cuts then full spline. U don't want it so tuff u can't blindly line it up but still want key lock vs just 1 spline cut hits limit fail. If u hve 3 key way chances all 3 shear & leave u stranded is v/low, vs striping spline chance high esp in weaker spline set ups.
