As a novice 4x4 driver myself, I was a bit apprehensive, especially after I heard horror stories from other 4x4 enthusiast. My stepfather and mother were in the bakkie in front of us, towing their self-built caravan. At one point they did get stuck in the sand and we utilised all resources to get them out (by using grass, leaves, etc.). After we got out we never got stuck again, but experienced some challenges with the steep sand dunes following that. The first few dunes were scary but afterwards we successfully got over it like pros and had an uneventful trip to Motopi followed (mostly on L4 drive). The next day to Mabuasehube, we mostly driven in H4 since the sand was not as deep as on the Nossob-Motopi road.
