I like this lesson. My parents very often lecture me on how to be healthier, like sleep earlier, exercise, or eat better food. And while I understand those are healthy lifestyles that would lead to a longer lifespan, and lose weight, more often than not, I find myself ignoring or resenting their lectures. They keep beating it into my head, which only makes me want to resent more. They're not really helping me, they're just _telling_ me what I _should_ be doing rather than coming up with solutions to help me actually have a healthier lifestyle. I'm a night owl, I'm also a writer and a gamer, so I don't get a lot of exercise on my own, and I tend to prefer food that tastes good, like pizza or tacos, generally food that aren't good for you. Just _telling_ me to eat food I find tasteless or disgusting, or force me to change my sleep schedule or that I should move around more doesn't really help me do any of that. All that does is make me feel like a stupid, lazy, crappy, worthless person who can't keep herself motivated or straight to take better care of herself. What I would prefer them doing is have them work something out for me. Maybe give me a schedule when to walk outside the house that doesn't cut into my writing or gaming time, or actually buy some of this health stuff that I'm very ignorant about, and am very hesitant to try for myself, and let me eat it along with food I actually enjoy in case I may not like it. They should just leave my sleep schedule alone because I get enough sleep to be functioning instead of stubbornly being insistent on that I _need_ to sleep earlier. If you've actually read all this, congratulations, you had a lot of patience of reading me ramble on about my parents.

I know all too well. My family are all military and health and fitness is required for the job. Where as I, not going to join the military. More or less... i can't. I have Autism so that makes me "medical unfit" to serve anyway. And before anyone tells me I can. I've tried. My mother would always lecture me about health and fitness in middle and high school and I hated. I was already being bullied or harassed for me body that being people touching me when I didn't want to be touched or make fun of me to how my body developed. I became a target. But my mother couldn't see past that. It took me coming forward at 20 to my mum telling her I had been sexually assaulted and attacked for her to realised why I put my physical and mental health on the backburner. It's because I became a target. She started to help me being helping me with the police, finding a good therapist and having my other Dad to teach me how to eat good food without me being repulsed by it.

I'm reading these comments two years late. And while I don't get this from my parents. I do from other forces, especially my ex friend who seemed more interest in controlling my life rather than doing anything productive. In fact, I now have acid issues because she wouldn't leave me alone about my preferred choice of beverage, I stopped at the drop of a hat and now my bodies being eaten from the inside out. And I don't see it reverting, ever... So yeah. I get certain things are better for you, but there's a right and wrong way to do things as well. Human bodies need time to adjust, and you mentally need time to adjust as well. Develop productive habits, and things that are both good and enticing. Not just being told to abandon something, or do X instead. There needs to be transitional periods, stomachs especially take time to adjust, it's literally an entire micro ecosystem living inside you. And it's not just humans either. Animals in general need time in order to get to the point where they can digest certain things, even if those things would be good for them. And I recognize this is a slightly different topic but I do think it's related enough. And the reason for this is because I often am the one telling myself the problems I have. Having the opposite issue of others not listening to me, or telling me things that only cause MORE or even worse problems for myself. I once told a counsellor I wanted to "fix my sleep schedule" and hit yelled at "TWENTY FOUR HOURS" she repeated I don't even know how many times until going on to say "hurting people is a coping mechanism and you get sent to jail for it" yeah, you want to elaborate on that one? I haven't seen any credentials for your job, and it sure sounds like you have personal experience with that one. And to think she's working for a school. So yeah, I stopped talking to anyone about my health only for it to spiral faster for it. I don't like people being pushy about things any more than anyone else. But being ignored or screamed at for acknowledging your own problems isn't any better. Two sides of the "I'm not listening to you, instead going to tell you how to live your life" coin.

@@rizkit1752 Yeah, I get that all the time too, trust me. It's never easy, even as an adult. I work part-time at a clearance department store and take care of my house the rest of the time, and yet to my parents, it still feels like I don't do enough. Like, I'm another person on the spectrum (hence my KZread moniker) and the way my parents push me to do stuff does not help at all. If anything, it only makes me hate them more. Sometimes parents need to learn to let kids do stuff on their own time, to let them do their own things as they grow up. *(Sigh)* If parents had learned that sooner, the world would be a _much_ better place.

The more I think about the lesson from this episode, I'm reminded of the lesson from "Mysterious Mare-Do-Well", do the right thing for the right reasons. These lessons go hand in hand. If you are helping people for the sole purpose of helping, that's the right reason. Not asking for praise, a reward or anything else except the satisfaction of helping another person. That's what I love to do. I have worked in multiple customer service professions and I really like to help people. I consider it my goal to make people satisfied they met me by helping them as much as I can. If they pay me or even thank me for helping, I consider that a bonus. I just like the warm feeling I get when I help someone.

I love the message about respecting others, even when you're trying to help them. It's my main issue with SPEW from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. (For those who haven't read the book, it stands for the Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare, and it's a club Hermione Granger created with the goal of 'helping' house elves.) It's undeniable that Hermione had good intensions, and it's possible that the globalized freeing of house elves is a good goal. It's never really made clear if we're only exposed to a few bad owners, or if the relation between house elves and wizards is symbiotic, or if it's almost like having a working animal like a sheepdog. However, Hermione decides that the best way to help is to forcibly free house elves that are happy where they are and may not have anywhere better to go. Even if house elves are slaves, which they may be, Hermione's attempts to force them into freedom ended up upsetting them all and undermining her own cause. If she had taken the time to understand the house elves' culture, maybe asked them about bad previous masters and things that could be done to help those in bad situations, she could have been effective. Instead, she just upset a lot of people.

Asking for help can have different interpretations depending on the culture, especially if, in the history of that particular culture, appeals for aid have had largely negative consequences. It is possible that, in Yak culture, the notion of asking for help from an outsider has a very negative connotation.

I relate so hard to Pinkie Pie and Prince Rutherford in this episode. There are times when my Mom wants to constantly help me with everything and, even though I know she means well, it annoys and sometimes angers me because as an adult, I often feel like always asking for help makes it look like I can't do anything on my own. Then there are times when I legitimately cannot do something by myself and need help, but my Mom refuses to help me because she thinks as an adult, I should be able to do the task by myself. At several points in my life, I have been Pinkie and I have been Prince Rutherford in this episode: I often say I don't need help because I wanna be independent but then I do need help but just don't ask because I don't wanna be seen as useless or dependent on others. This episode really understands how I feel in either scenario...

  • @RoninCatholic

My usual reason for not asking for help has nothing to do with pride and little to do with not wanting to burden others - it's more a long, long, fairly consistent history of not getting any help even if I need and ask for it.

I can agree actually. At home I can loose things a lot, and when I ask if anyone seen it, some say no. And because they haven’t seen it or probably know what the item is, I don’t ask them for help. Even if I am throwing a tantrum, no one helps. But if it’s the other way around, they actually expect me to help. I haven’t seen the item, I don’t know what it looks like and I wouldn’t know where to start if they didn’t know. Instead they shout at me for not helping and I’m left with no choice but to help helplessly.

Prince Rutherford's pride, especially over the starving children, was why I hated him more as well as this episode. While accepting help would make him look weak and having his authority figure undermined, there's also a responsibility when being a leader! Strength or not, it is just as important, if not more important, to think for others if you're a leader. There's a reason for that role. So he got stuck in a hole and manage to get out? Good for him! Have others though? You can't assume that to others! Everyone's different! If anything, refusing help makes you look more irresponsible on top of having your authority undermined by having children starve. Yeah, great leadership there, Rutherford! I applaud to your negligence! Ever since then, I referred Rutherford as Prince Ruthless.

I think I am one of the rare few who liked the Yaks from the start even though I could see people's issues with them. Josh your line about, "Forcing help on others" really got to me because unfortunately that's one of the reasons why I can't stand it when people try to force help on me. Sad, but it's a reason why I chose to separate myself emotionally from my parents as much as possible. OMG It was great seeing Green Scorpion here! Loved this collab! Or better still, to help with the incompetence of your solders, get a reprogrammed T series tactical droid to supervise when you and Ari are away from the base. Oh just one last recommendation for comedic effect, replace the party howitzer for something with a higher caliber. I like old machines an found that a Schwerer Gustav replica rail cannon would be good for sending those intruders an extra twenty miles. But then again you'd have to make a railway to use it. Oh, and I must say that it was funny seeing Tricky taking up the role of Ari's magic hat again, seems like steady work. He'll need a steady gig now since his KZread channel got taken down.

I do like the discussion about asking for help. Everyone has their own language too. One of my friends owns a small business that was halted because of the virus. She's a single mom and not the richest person. I knew she was having trouble, but she has a hard time accepting gifts. But she did accept me paying triple price for her products of my own offer and will. One of my other friends does accept gifts, and in return she'll cover when you need her. I'm one who can't ask for help. I guess in my case it's pride. I'm so used to doing things alone. One of my friends described me as someone who acts tough but drops it once the door closes behind me. And he's right. He actually had to encourage me to ask for help when I hit a really dark spot in my life. I was so afraid of being sent to an institution that I just couldn't ask for help. Finally after so many days, I talked to my psychiatrist and therapist, and now have an antidepressant. Things still get to me from time to time, but it's worth it. Honestly asking for help is harder for me to say than anything else. I apologise for pretty much everything I do, so I don't think my pride is that strong, but it's strong enough for to have a hard time asking for help. I'm terrified of being vulnerable. I act big and tough but honestly it's just a facade. As I'm sure many people experience.

I didn't really care for this episode when I watched it, even though I chuckled at some of the jokes and was happily surprised by the moral. But thanks Josh, you just bumped it up a few notches in my mind. And you too, scorpion. I also had difficulty asking my parents for financial help while I was in college, so I related to your story somewhat.

When I first watched this episode, I was a bit awkard, as it almost felt like "Trouncing other people's cultures is good and you know better." But I may have been taking it too seriously (*BA DUM TSS") and going by the "Do the Right Thing if only because its the right thing" is something I like A LOT more, especially because I feel like the media has gotten so cynical and obsessed with subverting more traditional morals for its own sake. On another note, I've never really minded the Yaks. Pinkie stole the show in their debut episode, and they have gotten better showings in the comics, so I can't say I hate them. If anything, Im slightly indiferent to them.

Due to past experiences, "asking for help" (from my old grade schools) was impossible if you have teachers like Joan Crawford as a drill sergeant. I would get in trouble for doing what the other kids were doing yet the kids didn't get in any trouble. I've been afraid of asking anyone in high school for help if I couldn't understand the problems in my lessons. So, I would pretend I got it, even if I didn't. At first, I thought I was the only one at the time. But, I'm guessing it's a "hidden secret" that everyone has and it's hereditary. My grandma (from my late mom's side) would sometimes ask me to help her with some things that she can't do on her own due to having sore and tired muscles and joints. Despite us having a few tiffs here and there, I don't really mind helping her. When I lost my mom to epilepsy, it felt like a huge reset, and I would have to learn everything all over again. Plus, with ADHD, maladaptive daydreaming, and some anxiety issues, along with some trust issues from family members... Let's just say that I'm "fine" and my normal/everyday face looks like a perma-frown.

So basically the morals of the story are "Keep an open mind" and "Do the right thing for the right reasons". Eh, makes sense. I usually do some things without seeking recognition like this one time when I rescued a bird from my basement window and released it outside or another time when I saved a chipmunk from one of my cats even though it bit me out of fear. I like helping others out, be they human or animals.

Getting offered or asked if I need help is a sore spot with me, as well. I have a history of not being taken seriously and being told I can't do things on my own, or I'm likely to screw up, also of not being listened to and hearing "you just don't want to do this"/"you're just making up excuses". It's pretty much gotten to the point that I feel like I *have* to deal with everything that gets thrown at me on my own, otherwise I'm just going to be seen as a scared crybaby who needs someone to hold her hand all the time, though I'm at least self-aware enough to admit that being seen as a stubborn, angry crazy person is just as bad, but at this point it's been a habit for so long that I doubt I'd ever be able to break it.
