That brown cheese actually has a story! So it's called Gudbrandsdalsost because it's from Gudbrandsdalen, or the Gudbrand Valley and was created by Anne Hov! In the 19th century, Gudbrandsdalen was struggling with butter and grain sales. While working at a farm near the village of Gålå in 1863, Anne came up with the idea of adding cream to whey when boiling, and to boil it down in an iron pot until the fluid content was reduced to less than 80 percent, creating a firmer, fattier, more cheese-like product. This cheese soon caught on, and everyone in the valley started eating it. When she got married and moved to Nord-Fron, she added goat milk to the recipe (fitting for this video). A trader loved it so much, he wanted to sell it in Oslo. To attract investment to the valley, he called it Gudbrandsdalsost (it was called fløtemysost before that; cream whey cheese) and it worked. Hov received the King's Medal of Merit for her contributions to Norwegian cuisine and the economy in 1933 at age 87!

I’ve commented on this channel a few times before, but seriously - you are by far my favourite KZreadr. I’ve been through a harrowing time lately and these videos have quite genuinely helped me when I’ve needed something to help me stay calm. Can’t even articulate what it is in particular, but they’re so relaxing yet keep me interested; a welcome distraction at 2 am when I can’t sleep! Thanks bud!!

Hi Mike! What a lovely travel partner your sister is. Such an adventurous duo the two of you! I lost my only brother in a car accident when he was only 24 years old. Him and i went on many adventures together. We were best friends & I get the feeling that you and your sister are too. Thanks for showing us around Norway, the views are breathtaking! ~Kim
Thanks for all these great videos Michael! It's so great to see a local KZreadr make such great content and let us see the world! Keep it up

Wow! Much appreciated! Thanks so much... Sorry I missed this comment until now. I'm so glad you enjoy the videos. :)
This is the train trip I thought last week's installment was going to be as it is also so scenic. The route is often called "Norway in a Nutshell." I never heard of a zipline there, but of course you two would find one; that must have felt incredible. I've taken this trip and continued from Flam to Bergen by boat, another option.
I live in Bergen and I've been looking forward to this episode ever since I glimpsed Flåmsbanen in the intro to the series, didnt disappoint! Glad you included the Bergen railway as well, while most people in Norway travel between Bergen and Oslo by plane I always try to take the train when I can, such a lovely experience.

Oslo fun facts: Oslo became the capital of Norway in 1299, but it wasn't always the capital as before that, it was Bergen! In fact, in 1600, Bergen was the largest city in Scandinavia at a population of 15,000. Oslo also used to be called Christiania! After a fire ripped through the city in 1624, King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway ordered the city to be rebuilt across the bay, near Akershus Castle, and called the ‘new' Oslo, Christiania. The name Oslo was kept for the now poor suburb where the original city stood, which today is known as Gamlebyen (the Old Town). Oslo wouldn't be restored as the city's name until 1925, because they realized having a Norwegian city named after a Danish monarch didn't seem right.

There are many stories to tell in the Northern Europe! 😍
The Oslo-Bergen Railway is one of the world's best. When you mentioned it would take five hours to Myrdal I was taken aback - clearly I'd forgotten the full line to Bergen is 6.5 hours. It's certainly not boring. Obviously the Flåm railway is also a must do.
Wow I’m in norway now and after seeing this I might have to give it a try 🤩
This is so cool!💯Thanks for sharing this beautiful video from my country 🇳🇴Love from Norway 🤍

You and your sis are very photogenic together and I love the familial wild hair at 3:46. The "brown cheese" is Gjetost is made from slow cooked milk. It's delicious and tastes reminiscent of caramel. Delicious on apples. I hope you and your sister make more vids together, actually I love that you include all of your family members from time to time. Two thumbs up!

My late Grandpa was from Norway, Ive always heard stories of his home. Thanks for showing some of his home country.
Very nice! About twenty years ago, I also took the train from Oslo to Myrdal, and the Flåmsbanen, but rather than taking the train back up, I took a ferry from Flåm to Bergen, which was absolutely stunning, ferrying a few hours through the fjords and along the coast. It's quite some time ago, but that was one of the best travel experiences!
The scenery on this journey is utterly spectacular. Norway is officially on my bucket list.
It genuinely makes my day every time I see a new video from your channel.
I'm from Norway so I'm happy that you liked the country/trip!

Mike, this was the most beautiful thing I have seen ever. I love trains and I have been with you for a few, but this had to hit the top of the list of "beautiful" things to see. I can not imagine being on a train and seeing all this, then jumping on a zip line to go down. I have always wanted to do that, but now I am too old and everyone thinks I am crazy for still wanting that thrill. Love your videos.

The way you announced that you were passing the goats on your bicycle was priceless. I never had a cyclist be so considerate or complimentary to me.
By the way the North wales coastline rail is really pretty. Plus they have the longest train station name in Anglesey. Not sure if they are going to the station ATM post covid. But might be worth a look 👀
Sister Jess is a legend for bringing cards on the train because same. I’d pack a deck of UNO.
I took the ferry from Gudvangen to Flåm 5 years ago but wasn't able to take the train. This definitely gives me a reason to go back!!
I am a introverted home-body but my god. I have binge watched all your series pretty much and they always make me want to travel :O
Your videos are amazing. I'm Norwegian, and have taken the "Bergensbanen" myself. I never saw it in the way you present it though.

Interesting timing! I just took this exact trip nearly a month ago. Absolutely fantastic
That was incredible!! The scenery is stunning!
The views from that zip line were incredible, but I'd be scared to death! I also would have a hard time leaving the goats behind, lol. I would love to stay in one of those little towns dotting the river, the colorful houses combined with all that beautiful green landscape look more like a painting than real life.
I’m not even into trains, but I enjoy your train content as well. It shows that you enjoy it.
those views when you were biking brought me to tears... i can only imagine the emotions of actually seeing that in person!

Great video! I've seen many cab view trips on these trains on RailCowGirl's channel but its nice to see the ride from the passenger's perspective.
We did this train journey 2/3 weeks ago and it was crazy with loads of snow
Very cool train ride, thanks for taking us along! 🚆🚇🚉🚅
I think this will probably become my favourite series! The shots and the view is amazing and good to see you both traveling together. Have a great journey and wish you both the best.
This video brings back some fantastic memories of my travels in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. When i was in Scandinavia i started in Bergen, then took the ferry from Bergen to Flåm, taking the train from Flåm to Myrdal. Then Myrdal to Oslo before leaving Norway. And that train ride was the most incredible I’ve ever been in and the five minute stop in front of the waterfall was one of the best experiences I’ve had. Also in Flåm there were no cruise ships so i could take a swim in the fjords. This video brought back all those wonderful memories to me and i thank you DownieLive. May your stay in the north lands be filled with happiness and joy.
Amazing scenery and loved the zip line ride. I definitely need to go there and do it now. Appreciative of you highlighting not only the scenery and sights but also the different ways of travel

Surprised you didn’t mention the surprise appearance of the ‘lady in red’ during the waterfall stop on that train from Flåm to Myrdal. That was the most bizarre thing I remembered when taking the Flåm Railway! 😅
Now I’ve got a new item on my bucket list. The scenery in Norway is truly incredible!

Next time you come to Norway, you have to do the Golden Route. You just did half of it. When at Flåm, you continue with the local ferry out the fjord and all the way to Bergen. You will arrive there in good time to catch the nighttrain back to Oslo. ❤
Stunning scenery and trains, you can't beat that! Well done.
That zip line part gave me goosebumps. Just so beautiful😍

Gosh SO beautiful! You and your sister make a great team. Those trains are really hard workers. The goat hiding on the edge of the bridge was so cute and all the goats at that perfect coffee shop too.
I am banking on the fact that this will be quite the delightful trip and quite uplifting. Yes, this made me smile! Guess if ever it might be able to come to pass~ this is on my bucket list. Thank you so much you two! 🌻

Hi Mike (and Jess)! Just catching up with a backlog of KZread and other techy stuff after a busy couple of weeks (70th birthday and other things). WOW! I've seen a number of videos and written articles on the Flam railway and wish I had time and could afford to go there. You have excelled in this presentation. I had no idea that the zip line, intermediate coffee shop and bicycle hire option was available and the goats...well... at least those on the bike path gave you a wide berth to pass safely (wouldn't have wanted to launch and cartwheel over that fence). You and Jess are indeed blessed to be able to travel and do adventurous things and be able to share your experiences with the rest of us. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Now I must watch this week's offering on the Arctic Train. Cheers from Michael downunder in Melbourne.
Adding Norway to my must go list!
Thank you for the great content. Norway is beautiful. You are becoming the best travel blog I have seen. I guess it helps that I love trains.
I did this is the depths of winter, good to see it with greenery, thank you.
Yes! I've been excited for this episdoe. I did this trip in reverse: Bergen to Oslo. I lived on a ship and coming into port in Bergen will remain in my mind for a lifetime, along with the train ride to catch up with my ship in Oslo. Love it!
Great Video Mike. I am glad that you are traveling again. Great to see Jess with you.
This is why I love youtube. You are this obviously very talented young travel journalist and youtube provides this platform for you to share these amazing experiences with the world. 2 decades ago you would have to jump to endless hoops in order to get broadcasted, now it's down to your own talent and dedication(of which you seem to have a generous helping of both). KZread is way better for this kind of content that broadcast television ever was. GREAT CONTENT! Keep it coming:)
