Taking many airlayers from one Japanese Maple Bonsai?
Instead of cutting off and throwing away sacrifice branches, one can take airlayers and create a bonsai out of the resulting plant.
Yes, airlayers.
Can you take more than one airlayer from a maple?
Yes you can. This video shows it all!

Wow - this opens up a whole new world of possibilities! Awesome experiment!

It does!
That's a great job. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting experiment. And using mesh tape for the drainage holes is brilliant, I'm so stealing that idea. 👍
Brilliant idea! Last spring I collected a 2-3 meter birch, planted it in the ground and let it settle for this season. My plan was to take air layers one per year starting from the top from 2024 onwards. Never even crossed my mind you could do them simultaineously. Will speed up the process!

Sounds great! Curious to hear how layering Birch turns out!

@@GrowingBonsai This summer I tried on a different birch. It was a total failure. But for this birch it's the base I'm most interested in. If the layers fail they fail. I'll get a few sticks more firewood.
Nicely done!

Actually i have to admit its the first time i see somebody do airlayering without all that spagnum moss and special stuff. Awesome how this works! Thanks for showing Jelle!

Thank you for doing this experiment. I wondered but didn't have the experience to believe it would work. Now that tall nursery twin trunk hornbeam best watch out. I coming for it in the spring with about 6 air layers figured out. Love your videos. Such clear and concise explanations and illustrations. Thanks!

Informative and well-presented video. I suspect you have inspired many bonsai growers to try this next Spring.

Your air layers do well in your bonsai mix. I usually use spag moss might do a combination this weekend. Cheers from down under

Bravo - point made and well demonstrated Jelle :)

You disproved a long held belief that you can’t air layer upstream from a lower air layer on the same branch
@abydosianchulac2

Yup, as long as the lower layer has branches coming off it as well, it's possible

Awesome work! Adding to the "too many trees" complaint, but hey, free trees; who can say no?! Proving that there is no such thing as a "sacrifice".

An air layering frenzy! … love it. I have an air layer on my maple but don’t see any roots….it’s been on for at least 5 months but now it’s autumn…..shall I leave until next year…the top is still alive….thanks

@@GrowingBonsai Thanks for the advice. I have just published another video “Autumn Colours” …. This shows the air layering but also have another question if you don’t mind…. How thick does a branch need to be to be air layered….. can you layer thin branches? Thanks

Something i must try next season. Am trying to propagate f/m black Poplar as they are now the rarest tree in the UK. Only 6-700 left in the wild.

Great tutorial. I have a medium sized Katsura that I can get perhaps 5 decent layers off. Is it worth staggering top, middle & bottom by a couple of weeks each? To give the upper layers a head start.

@@GrowingBonsai I wondered if you'd had success airlayering now for next year? I've got an old Acer Palmatum with alot of crossing branches. I wondered if I could put the layers on whilst it was dormant, ready for spring?
What is the substrate you use when potting
@GrowingBonsai

just regular bonsai substrate
👍👌🙂

Lol whats the rocket science here. As long as there is an uninterrupted flow between the air later and some leaves, you can make 49376242 air layers on one branch

No rocket science at all. Bonsai is not hard

I agree, it’s not rocket science………. but I do work for Blue Origin (we build and develop rockets for space), and in my humble opinion, bonsai is not easy. Building rockets isn’t easy either, but at least we have blueprints and plans for how to do it step by step……….. I don’t get that benefit when working with my bonsais.
