I only recently became medicated for this. (I'm 24). If, a few years from now, it was discovered that amphetamine medications likely shorten your lifespan by, let's say 3 to 5 years even at theraputic doses, I would take them anyway without batting an eye. I'd rather have fewer years of happiness and fulfillment than more years where I probably amount to nothing and die miserable and possibly alone because nobody (through no fault of theirs) could put up with me.

Fortunately things turned out ok .I've been medicated since then and It's almost impossible to picture life without it at this point. So yes, the meds work, but THERE ARE side effects. In my mind though they're a small price to pay for what you get in return.

I really like what Dr. Bradley says at 12:39-12:54, which ought to be true of all parents about all of their kids, after he'd just said that a parent is the shepherd to the child and gets to design the pasture: "Now that comes with it a profoundly freeing view of parenting, because what it means is, although it is important to be a shepherd, RECOGNIZING THAT THIS IS A UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL BEFORE YOU ALLOWS YOU TO ENJOY THE SHOW!"

I love his bit on giving extra time for tasks. He seriously had a Dave Ramsey moment there that was a change of pace. The frustration of not knowing what accommodation to ask for, so you just ask for a generic accommodation is very real.

I love this guy. Dr. Russell is an absolute authority and expert on difficult, complex yet extremely fascinating subject of ADHD. A real expert. (Funny, I added "real" before "expert," like the word "expert" is not trustworthy enough. Is it?) *Have you noticed we live in times where terms "expert and authority" get overly abused? People feel entitled to call themselves experts the moment Alexa explains them what ADHD acronym stands for. Not everyone is an expert, and not everyone is the authority. People in need of educating themselves on ADD often rely solely on their trusted advisor Google which in return gives them nothing less, but 14 million experts on a subject. What a crazy world! Even Buddha would end up with ADHD after trying to research ADHD. Hopefully sooner than later you'll come across a real diamond: Dr. Russell Barkley. Full package: you will get everything, plenty of scientific facts, supporting cases' examples, real life situations. He provides facts, provides examples, he shares solutions, but what I appreciate most: he will stimulate you to do the same on your own: research, keep looking and never give up. He serves you the Truth. Truth about ADHD and true in general sense. He repeats to remind you that Truth is never a single molecule. It is an assembled thing built through integrating across variety of sources. ADHD is a controversial subject, and underestimated condition. When I think of ADHD I see uplifting smiley face with sparkly eyes with sadness hidden behind them. Scared soul looking for answers and reasons of its repetitive failures, "its potential never used". ADHD can become a source of silly jokes thrown at daydreaming individual, or someone who always forgets his keys, and ironically at the same time ADHD can be traumatizing truth behind multiple divorces of the same individual. Not many conditions has that double face. ADHD seems goofy on its surface. Without people like Dr Russel, actively raising ADHD awareness, this condition will remain a commonly used joke, and abused reason to obtain stimulants to survive college years or have fun at the party. Doctor Russel helps uncover the stigma and breaks the stereotype of ADHD. This is a serious condition. He shows that under thin layer of ADHD goofy facade of not-so-serious condition lays complex, serious and difficult truth. This hidden enemy of genetically engraved patterns, behavioral habits deepening over lifetime along with often discouraging, continuously disapproving feedback from surrounding world has proven to be reason of many life failures of people with real and unique potential. uncomfortable

Yes! Very well spoken. There is a shadow truth to ADHD I don’t hear anyone talk about. It is a painful disorder. It is filled with despair and suffering, intense emotions that can’t be regulated, processed, or relieved. Even Russell glances over the emotional regulation impairment brought in with ADHD. It should not be understated. It is very painful, it does lead to suicide. It does kill. It is a horrible life to have and a terrible way to go. So... much... suffering. That no one seems to talk about.

They tried putting me on a "strike card" that teaches issued. When I got 3 strikes I went to ISS. Eventually they lowered it to two...and eventually from there it stopped because it did not work. I personally think the teaching style isn't suited for us in general so we are inclined to rebel.

yeah there is the belief system thing - on the emotional /psychological / conscious / unconscious person which parents most def do have an impact on. there is providing an environment and relationships, sense of the world, and self which all impact on choices and the experience of life that can either allow or inhibit the maturation and even the genetic expression of traits. clearly there are so many types / expressions of ADHD and the like, that these techniques and this advice is very expensive and confusing hot air. be patient with your kids. help them find what they love. they shouldn't be jammed into some commercially viable persona of success with checklists and rewards and careful monitoring by everyone they are supposed to trust. be patient and respectful. don't own them and enslave them.

the first 3 pages of his book is wonderful! When i read them about 19 years ago, for the 1st time in my life, I felt like I had a friend - someone who really understood me FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE!!! - because there was a lengthy ADHD assessment test, and I scored 100% POSITIVE for FULL-BLOWN ADHD. But I couldn't read the book BECAUSE I HAD ADHD! (Why didn't Mr Barkley figure out that PEOPLE with ADHD COULDN'T READ HIS BOOK - BECAUSE they had ADHD????) And there WAS NO audio version. So I wrote him and told him he needed to create one and why. i guess others did too, because about 10 years later, he got off his arse and did it. But the price was (and is) so high that anyone on a meager fixed income can't afford to buy it. So I never did. My dad used to call people like this, 'Educated Idiots', because they'd gone to school, gotten degrees, learned everything the textbooks told them, but had NO common sense! Thank you for writing your book - AND for listening, Mr Barkley. I really enjoyed the 1st 3 pages! The local library system doesn't have your audiobook. When I get rich enough, I may listen to it, unless life gets in the way or I croak first.

Barkley's vested interest in the success of ADHD isn't his brother's death in a car crash. It is the career of Russell A Barkley. Barkley talks about ADHD being scientific. “Does your child have difficulty awaiting his turn seldom, often, or never? Does he interrupt or intrude on others seldom, often, or never?” The answers are then tallied up and a diagnosis is made. A computer or layperson could just as easily perform the evaluation. The child himself is observed only minimally by the doctor; rarely is the context of his behavior-family life, school, friendships-considered. The tidy list of DSM symptoms may look objective, and they may satisfy the discipline’s need to look “scientific,” but they are heavily subject to the eye of the beholder. Richard Fee was diagnosed as ADHD as was John Edwards. Where are they now?
