I attempted this method 2 months ago using java moss on lava rock and setup C02 injection. I used a scoop of greek yogurt in my "moss slushy" and lots of mold formed very fast within a week. I ended up flooding my tank after 3 weeks because of it and was worried this method failed but to my delight moss is just now starting to cover the entire rock and get thick! SUPER excited with how beautiful it's starting to look. I've learned so much from MJ and his aquascaping colleagues. So grateful for you and your team's videos. They are PHENOMENAL!!!!

You can also use finely sieved / or ground peat moss, mixed in with the aquarium moss. You use it instead of aqua soil or yoghurt etc. It looks like soil, and it’s naturally acidic so it’s very good for preventing microbes and mould etc. It’s often used for getting plant seeds to sprout. Just make sure you use peat moss not coco peat, they’re different things. I’ve seen Jurijs Jutjajevs use springtails to eat mould too.

Brilliant approach for all the reasons you detailed. Impressive. I would have liked to see a few minutes more of the application technique, because it didn't appear the moss smoothie readily left your brush or initially stuck to the wood. How long did it to completely apply all that you ultimately did? Also, how often did you need to pause and spray what you had applied to avoid drying-out? Amazing technique and natural-looking results. I just would've like to see more of the process. Heading over to your lava rock video. Thank you.

I tried this with Christmas moss, following your instructions exactly. Maintained a consistent 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the tank, used beneficial bacteria in the water i misted it with two to three times a day, kept it covered, but now 4 weeks in the only thing that has happened is that I wasted a large clump of moss and the wood I used is black due to the aqua soil that was mixed in. Has anyone else tried this with any success or has anyone done it with java Christmas moss? I don't know if I'm unlucky or if this just doesn't work as advertised.

A diatomaceous earth or bentonite clay powder mixed with the moss and water should work well as a nutrient layer and bonding agent. You could even coat the hardscape first by rubbing or painting the mineral clay mud directly on to the hardscape before applying the moss.

I really like this method and could see where a thicker version might be easier to apply - but then it might not look as natural as your results. I am doing my first aquascape ever atm, in a nano tank. I was going to do a dark start, but it is a very vertical tank and I'm thinking that adding plants with water already in the tank will be too difficult as a 1st timer (although I guess as long as your filter media didn't get dry you could drain the tank first, plant and then refill?). Now I'm tempted to cover my rockscape with moss! It is a low tech tank and moss sounds good as a newbie :) Thank you for so much inspiration to make an amazing nano setup!

I am doing this right now, 3 days in at the moment following your method! I soaked my scape for about 3 days and then grinded up the moss and aqua soil. I’m using the Tropica soil with Java moss as I figured that would be an easier moss to try for my first time. I painted it all over where I would like it to grow, mainly on the rocks and particular places of wood. I also have put small, thin pieces of Java moss on the smaller wood sticks, not grinded and not glued or tied down and gave them a light coat of the moss slush. Because there is no water, they are just sticking to the wood with no mess. I have noticed that I need to spray them down about 3-4 times a day so far to keep them very moist. It’s only a 25l so I guess the light is drying it out more quickly. I’m going to leave it about 5 weeks in total, the tank is located in my kitchen which has constant a nice warm environment. Thank you for work, it’s helping me a lot. Wish me luck 🤞

This is a great idea! Thankyou for sharing, I’m soon setting up a tank, will try it. Ps: I’ll have to try the blender part when the wife’s not home 😂

Dear Michael, I've watched many of your videos and very impressed on your achivements. One thing I would like to check with you is that you have mentioned that growing carpet plants from seed would not survive after some period say 6 months. Did you really experiment it. Please advise as indeed there many aquaris do this. Thanks

I heard about adding egg whites to the moss smoothie as it's a natural adhesive too
