the wife is gone, he hasn't his daughter in a while, so he's been depressed. now that his daughter wants to see him, he's no longer depressed. hence why he said "take that depression."

He was kicked out of his home for falling in love with an outsider and disobeying their rules. He was then sent to live in hell for all eternity and was surrounded by the cruelest and most heartless people to ever exist as a lesson for his disobedience. Not only that, but after him and his love had a child, she left him, and his daughter never wanted anything to do with him believing that he was a deadbeat. He had no one but himself for years
