I tried letting him play with a take five karaoke but he’s having difficulty as they are arranged differently. I’m wondering maybe if he uses the one you are using, I think he’ll be able to do better.

    @@fredcavesemusic Oh yes, very funny :-) My friends and I (www.ambiosonics.de) are playing improvisation only, that's why every song is different, new and not repeatable - and, sometimes: funny too Btw, when I hear Paul Desmond playing, it is not only "like a dry Martini", for me it is like "Tinker Bell, the happy pixy, is dancing soft and easy on the first morning sunrays in spring, delicately touching the colored blossoms and the light green leaves covered with dew in the mystic garden". Nice picture, isn't it? Regards from Munich

    The soprano in the alto frequency- the sound of those low notes is more beautiful than alto. Also in classical, an oboe or clarinet concerto is much better on a soprano sax. It holds your attention (you don’t sleep).

    Thank you for the kind words. FWIW... In the video, I'm using a Sopranoplanet "Missing Link" mouthpiece and Vandoren Traditional #1 reed. However, this is not really a "bronze" sax... It's a 1977 Selmer Mark VI which has lost most of its original lacquer. I'm not the original owner. There are some companies that make saxes with an aged patina/bronze finish (I have a Cannonball tenor with their "Brute" aged finish), and some people say that finish gives the instrument an "edgier" sound.

    The original key of Take Five in the version played by Paul Desmond in concert pitch for Dave Brubeck’s piano and for Desmond to solo on the alto sax had 6 flats , that is the key of Db. I play both instruments professionally and there is no point in playing the tune in the original key on the clarinet or soprano sax, but this version of the tune doesn’t sound bad, but cannot compare playing it on the instrument it was composed for !

  • @fredcavesemusic

    @fredcavesemusic

    3 жыл бұрын

    The original key of Take Five -- recorded by Brubeck/Desmond -- was concert Eb minor. That's C minor on the alto sax (3 flats, not 6). And that's F minor (4 flats) for clarinet and soprano sax. You say "there is no point in playing the tune in the original key on the... soprano sax." Well, I just did in this video, I do it all the time on gigs, and it goes over well. But I thank you for your professional insight and look forward to hearing your version.

    This is an interesting question I struggle with. It's nice to play songs in the original key on a different horn, but do you think some songs work better if you just transpose them so that you are playing them using the original fingerings. That way your tone can be closer, and you don't (possibly) run out of low notes? For instance Ornette's "Lonely Woman" on tenor.

  • @fredcavesemusic

    @fredcavesemusic

    3 жыл бұрын

    I like to try to play classic jazz standards in the original key if possible, despite whatever instrument I'm using. That way, the pitch and notes stay consistent to the listener's ear; only the timbre of the instrument is different. If running out of low notes is an issue, taking it up an octave usually works. Also, as a solo musician, staying with the original key keeps me from needing multiple versions of the song's backing track in my library. That said, however, I sometimes do change the key. For instance, I like to play Take Five on the sopranino sax in the same key in which I play it on the soprano sax (F minor). Two reasons for that: (1) Don't need to learn new fingerings for the sopranino, and (2) playing it on the sopranino in the song's original key would take the notes up too high for my taste on an already high-pitched instrument. So, to accomplish these goals, I did have to find another backing track. FWIW, here's how it worked out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIBkq86fh5XYnc4.html
