Take Control Over Your Bagpipe Soundtrack (What's Stopping You From Learning the Bagpipes?!)

Музыка

We all have a story or soundtrack going on in our heads. I'm talking about the repetitive thoughts that stall out any forward progress on your bagpipe journey. I'm also including the mental loops that stop you from having any fun learning the bagpipes. 😣
What is your negative mental soundtrack? "I'm too old", "I'm not musical enough", "The bagpipes are the toughest instrument to learn", "I can have fun only when I'm a better piper". 😥
In this video, I'll share my own negative soundtrack. PLUS, I'll tell you how to take control of your bagpipe soundtrack so you can fast-forward your bagpipe learning and enjoy the journey! 😀

Just got my chanter in the mail. My main “soundtrack”, is “hot damn, this takes so much more air/breathe than playing flute in marching band!”

Haha Jessy! That’s an awesome soundtrack 😂. Your fingers will be so much more nimble confronts playing the flute! Once your breathing catches up you’ll be ahead of the game! 👌👌

YES! Sound track: I'm too old to learn...I've been "on and off" with try to learn for years. I'll never get this. However, once a tune is learned, it builds confidence and helps to change that sound track. Thanks!

Right on Independent TKD!! Taking action to learn tunes is an awesome way to flip those negative soundtracks on their heads. Well done!! 😀

Once I got past simple scales to being able to play actual tunes, then the motivation comes. It reminds me of playing Atari as a kid, when you just can't wait to play and get better (yes, Atari - I grew up in the eighties). I'm still on the PC and would love some advice on transferring to the goose. I have an adaptor to be able to use my PC on the bag, but I'm having air leakage at the adaptor, so I have to wrap and tape and unwrap/untape and it's a hassle. Should I try waxed string to wrap the chanter? I'm just using plain string now. Glad you started this channel. Looking forward to more videos and advice. Thank you.

Haha! I agree Amy, being able to play tunes helps so much!! Great to hear you want to transition to the goose more. Wrapping and taping would be enough of a barrier to disrupt your consistent practice. Waxed hemp could be good to try. Maybe it's worthwhile buying a second chanter, so you can leave one plugged into the goose and ready to play? I didn't actually learn playing a goose, but I think they are a great idea and there are different pipers in the Get Bagpipe Ready FB group who play the goose and may have some other suggestions for you! I bought my chanter and my book about a week ago and I'm having fun, but my soundtrack is, I'm too old to start learning the pipes and I live in Japan. Who the h**l is going to teach me the bagpipes in Japan? And even if I do reach any level of proficiency learning on my own with books and videos, who is going to want to listen to me play? My wife and my kids are already turned off by the sound of my chanter. The only thing going for me is that they never listen to anything I say, so maybe I can get them to ignore my playing too!

I think this is really common Jeremy! I know I’ve felt that way with my own piping at times too. I do like the saying, “ The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is right now!“ That helps me get back into living in the moment of the day, and celebrate my choice to pipe today 😀
