Take a look around Northern's new Class 331 train

Take a look at our new trains due to hit the Northern network from December this year. There's still a few things to finish off, but they're looking great.

Very sorry to hear this. We always put on as many carriages as we can, but at this time all our available carriages are in use across our network. The planning team allocate each day, based on what is available. However the number of available carriages can alter, due to scheduled maintenance, disruption or alterations. We do have brand new trains being built, which have a greater capacity than the trains they are replacing, and will be increasing our peak time capacity over the next couple of years. In the meantime we are also acquiring more carriages from other operating companies. Apologies for the inconvenience caused ^JB

@@NorthernRailwayOfficial I understand my area, Scarborough, isn't as much priority as the larger stations. But when I went to Hull, in the morning our train consisted of 4 coaches, two class 158s coupled together to form 4 carriages, and hardly anyone was on board it. But coming back was a crammed dirty 2 car 158! Do you base where you allocate rolling stock wherever is needed, or put it wherever? Obviously it will most likely be the same type of train for that route! But I'm glad we are getting some 155, and 150s to add more variety! Thanks for the improvements!

camjkerman There isn’t any 4th gen EMUs. And I’d say the Electrostars are probably much more comfortable than the 700s and Aventras since the Electrostars were ordered before the SRA and now the DfT started regulating everything the TOC does and specifying stupid requirements (like the ironing board seats) on all new train designs, so the Electrostars now have decent seats and are perfectly comfortable for both short and long distance

Voted worst railway line in UK - Licoln-Nottingham ;) But when i must go by train do Nottingham or Sheffield i trying to catch EMT - refurbished class 158 is really nice. And usually 4 cars in set - so always some empty seats to choose. Northern rail has original 158's 2 car sets or sometimes 150/1 at this route. Is lower comfort, because of it's age - looks dirty, but ticket cost same money...

Now that we're out of the EU (which I don't agree with btw) it would have made more sense to use Bombardier for new trains. They're based in Derby............not Zaragoza. Northern, for once couldn't you have put the cheapest deal aside and used your noddle instead? .....we can't afford to continue having everything you can think of being made for us overseas. Now we're independent we need to think alot more about these things. But people who voted 'Leave' evidently didn't think of 'these' things. Being out of the EU means being more self sufficient. And this means not having other countries to fall back on in making stuff for us, to compensate for out own shortsighted shortcomings. This is real now. Brexit is going to mean this. Wake up everyone.

Those black lines are just because they were built in the old CAF factory from before they got higher end equipment and the tooling that was used meant the panel gaps had to be larger, so its supposed to look like that. A puff-piece by Northern, but I have no problem with that since these 331s HAVE to be better than the pacers they replace. However, I wouldn't make a virtue of the fact that they are being built outside of the UK. I didn't see any WCs in the video but will presume they've thought of that in the design. Also, a lovingly lingering shot on a UK power point fitted on a "one between two seats" basis is almost bound to lead to problems on crowded trains (try leaving Leeds between 5pm-7pm weekdays) and are at just the right level for a well placed vandal's boot. Even my local bus now provides USB charging points for every seat but I didn't see this in the new Northern stock - a missed opportunity? A positive is the inclusion of a loop for hard of hearing passengers. After years of pacer trains these 331s are a breath of fresh air but sadly not the step change in design for which I'd hoped.

Numb or sore bottoms will be the order of the day with these trains.

British Rail Engineering Ltd made up the concept of a paced from combining abundant Leyland National Bus bodies and High speed Freight Wagon 1’s chassis. After privatisation, they were given to the leasing agents Angel Trains, Eversholt Rail and Porterbrook who lease them to the train operating companies Northern, Arriva and GWR. Blame BREL not Arriva.

  • @agent_605

    @agent_605

    5 жыл бұрын

It was made by BREL in the early 80s using old Leyland National Bus bodies and freight wagon chassis that weren’t needed as it was cheaper than ordering more Sprinters, and the alternative was to close many rural lines Beeching style. They were only meant as a stop gap until BR secures funding for new proper DMUs, although privatisation got in the way, and the government’s who privatised those franchises with Pacers on didn’t provide funding for their replacement, which is why it has taken so long. Don’t blame Arriva for it, they just inherited them from the previous company Wales & Borders (operated by National Express), who inherited them from Valley Lines, who in turn inherited them from BR. It’s the same for the other franchises, no franchise that didn’t have Pacers have introduced them since privatisation, it’s the franchises that had them originally that still have them now

Bombardier however need to finish the 345s for TfL Rail/Crossrail, as well as the 710s for London Overground, the 701s for South Western Railway, the 711s for c2c, the 720s for Greater Anglia and the 730s for LNWR and WMR

Like most modern Euro design units, an ugly looking front end and very stark and clinical interiors.... BUT, they are surely a massive improvement over what we have right now, and for that I welcome them with open arms, even if the design could be much more appealing. The pacers have long outstayed their welcome and anything that brings about their demise can only be a good thing. That said, since they can only run under AC wires, they cannot replace the pacers directly, more electrification is needed.

There is also the 195s which will replace mostly 158s which can then be cascaded onto other routes allowing for Pacers to be replaced, with all remaining trains being heavily refurbished

No, the 319s are being refurbished however the 331s will run newly electrified services and replace the 321s/322s in West Yorkshire and the 323s around Manchester

Annoyingly it seems northern are keeping the 319s and getting rid of the 323s. I guess they value train length and fleet commonality more than ride quality.

PETER GREEN There is some rumours going around that since WMR don’t want the 323s Northern may keep them, especially since they’ve been training crews at Liverpool to use them whilst there currently isn’t a route that uses 323s to Lime Street

This class 331 train 🚊 looks very nice 👌 and comfortable is much better than the crappy 142 and 144 pacer trains 🚂 🚂 🚊 🚊 🚆 🚆. The seats 💺💺💺💺 are cosy, comfortable, soft, nice 👌, trustworthy, good 👍, perfect 👍 🤩 😍, hopeful and finally great 👍. Of course there are 31 x 3 car class 331001-031 and 12 x 4 car class 331101-112 used for Northern Rail. Also there are 25 x 2 car class 195001-025 and 33 x 3 car class 195101-133 are also used for NT - Northern Rail as well and all accommodation is standard class only. It’s a no smoking 🚭 carriage. 👍👍👍
