The outer wheels have flanks on both sides of the wheel, which makes the car always follow the uninterrupted outer rail. One car follows the left outer rail, and the other car the right outer rail. The inner wheels are flat (no flanks at all), so they can travel across all rail segments when the cars meet in the middle of the distance.
