Taiwan's 2024 presidential election: A choice between democracy and dictatorship? | DW News

With just two days until elections in Taiwan, three parties are gearing up for a showdown that will shape the future of the island's relations with China. While domestic issues are a major draw for voters, the influence of Beijing dominates the contest. Taiwanese voters face a choice between three parties, and 3 visions for Taiwan’s future. Taiwan's ruling party DPP is framing the election as choice between democracy and dictatorship. The KMT argues its conciliatory approach will lower the risk of war. And the TPP sells itself as the voice of long-overlooked domestic concerns, while also offering a hand to Beijing. But as ever, looming over this democracy is the threat of Chinese attack. The fundamental question facing Taiwanese voters is who can best prevent that from happening.

It is not a choice between democracy and dictatorship ( as your caption shows). Taiwan is already a full fledged democracy !

Despite the serious environment, I envy the style of Taiwanese democracy. People have (relatively) decent options, and people are interested in a healthy level.

Voting in a country where your ballot has the potential to influence the entire spectrum of U.S. and China's foreign affairs must be an interesting experience. I believe Taiwan is more sovereign and independent than my own country (Spain), which requires EU permission for almost everything and possesses minimal international influence.

As the Taiwan election approaches, China experiences consistent deflation over the past three months. Go Taiwan 🇹🇼! You are a beautiful and strong country. Having a President undeniably means you exist as an independent nation. Support from the Philippines 🇵🇭👍.
