Tailbone PAIN RELIEF for SITTING | 4 Physiotherapy Treatments for COCCYX PAIN

Tailbone pain relief for sitting for faster coccydynia healing with Physiotherapist Michelle Kenway. Learn 4 cost effective ways to relieve and stop tailbone pain when sitting with these Physiotherapy treatment techniques.
Coccyx pain when sitting is often caused because the tailbone is involved in weight bearing during sitting, along with the 2 sitting bones in the buttocks. This is why sitting increases tailbone pain and can result in chronic tailbone pain (coccydynia).
Medical advice to reduce or avoid sitting with tailbone pain to allow healing is excellent advice and should be followed.
Causes of tailbone pain include:
*Poor sitting posture
*Prolonged sitting on a hard surface
*Direct coccyx injury (e.g. fall onto the tailbone, during childbirth)
*Pelvic floor muscle spasm
4 Tailbone Pain Treatments for Sitting
1. Wedge or Coccyx Cushion
Using a wedge shaped coccyx cushion reduces loading on the coccyx during sitting allowing coccyx strain to heal. Repeated sitting on the tailbone increases loading on the coccyx and can delay the rate of healing.
2. Towel Roll Support
A cost effective alternative to buying a wedge coccyx cushion is to use 2 towels (same size) rolled up and placed lengthways under each thigh when sitting. This has the effect of raising the tailbone off the chair and unloading the coccyx to reduce pain and promote healing.
Alternatively 2 angled foam offcuts can be used, 1 under each thigh to raise the buttocks and the coccyx off the chair to reduce strain on the tailbone.
Sit on a firm supportive chair and avoid sitting on soft low height chairs that lack support.
3. Lean Forward Sitting
Leaning forward when sitting changes the angle of the pelvis, tilting it forwards. This takes the coccyx out of contact with the chair reducing loading on the coccyx. Leaning forward can be supported by using a rolled up towel in the curve of the lower back in combination with a coccyx cushion during sitting.
4. Lengthen the Spine
Sitting with the spine lengthened shifts weight bearing from the tailbone forward to the 2 sitting bones. Using correct sitting posture long-term can help relieve tailbone pain and reduce the risk of developing chronic coccydynia.
Additional Physiotherapy Tips for Coccydynia Treatment
* Avoid Kegel exercises with tailbone pain unless medically advised. Some of the pelvic floor muscles attach directly to the tailbone. Kegel exercises that contract the pelvic floor muscles therefore pull on the coccyx and can aggravate tailbone pain.
*Cold pack application to the lower back and sacrum close to the tailbone pain for 20 minutes at a time can relieve tailbone pain.
*Anti inflammatory gel or cream can be applied to the skin over the tailbone for relief and reduction of inflammation. Check with your pharmacist regarding suitability for using anti inflammatory gel before applying to the skin only.

Still watching you and doing my best to incorporate your further tips. You made a lot of observations in this video Which certainly ring through with my ongoing issues with coccydynia. Many of your suggestions, like the need to sit forward and not lean back in any chair - no matter how comfortable that might be for some people , huge benefit and preference for a somewhat firm chair over a soft one, is sinking into a chair is very painful, and finally your assessment of donuts is being pretty useless - - - totally agree with all of this. I have a wedge coccyx pillow, and my only problem with it is that it is too high. I need a low slight wedge shaped pillow, still with the hole in the back of course. I am short and the high wedges available on the market lift me up too high so that my legs are dangling, which of course creates back tension and sway back, totally not the point of using a wedge. I was happy to see that I had actually discovered many of your suggestions on my own. Now I’m trying to figure out how to get my husband to watch this, to show him that I am actually not from Mars. Thanks!😂

Dear Michelle, are there any exercises (e.g. breathing exercises, pelvic floor exercises) that might help in obstipation type "outlet obstruction"?

  • @michellephysio

    @michellephysio

    2 жыл бұрын

@Cordyceps yes there is a bowel emptying technique that I have in this following video that combines breathing and pelvic floor relaxation (bearing in mind the stool consistency needs to be appropriate ie soft and well formed for this technique to work). It can take some time and practice but definitely worth learning to relax the external anal sphincter see here kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3ifm5Wcpr2npc4.html I hope this information helps, all the best

I have a fracture at the joint of the sacrum and coccyx. My PT had me do "windshield wiper" which exaggerated my pain badly. What can Indo at home to relieve the pain? Windshield wipers is when you lay on your stomach on a pillow, lift your legs up behind you, keep feet together and move them right to left several times. It applied pressure in the tailbone area and I've been feeling constant poking in my rectum area and my vaginal area is aching.....this exercise really messed me up. What can I do? It hurts bad

@Jennifer Gillaspy internal hip rotation can definitely cause knee and hip problems however the cause of your individual problem needs to be assessed by a physiotherapist to be sure. A physio consult can also help you determine best future management for this condition too.

I already have 2 years of pain of what I thought was coming from my tailbone. But an expert who did internal feeling discovered my tailbone isn’t causing my pain and is totally fine. What could it be causing pain after sitting too long? Muscles? Its a pain just above my anus. I just started doing the exercises in your video for a few days to see what it does.. some wedges are not really helping as well and still give pain when sitting too long on it.

I have been battling cpps or pelvic floor disfunction.I was holding tension in my pelvic region causing all kinds of pain. Always felt good in the morning. One way to see if it is this is push down your pelvic floor muscles as if your passing gas trying to relax and push down and if you feel immediate relief it could be your problem. Mine got real bad till everything hurt. Most is gone now but still have lingering tailbone pain.

I have no tailbone pain. But....I am suspicious of my experience of sitting or lying when pressure is placed just below the tailbone, and above the anus...and I sense that it is causing anal sphincter spasm or tightness (non painful). Is there a nerve or pressure point below the coccyx which could cause this?
