It's so sad when someone has to surrender a pet because they can no longer afford it. It seems Gooberhead was very loved by his previous owner - I hope he finds a new home that gives him just as much love!

It is sad. It’s never happened to me personally but my mother had a cat before I was born that she absolutely adored, and she couldn’t keep it because it got bad fleas and was spreading to her other cats. She still talks about the cat and how much she loved it. If I had to give up any of my animals I would be devastated but I know it would be for the best.

One of my cats was surrender to us she had some nasty tumors. The vet bills were like 2k and she needed 3 months of on the clock care but she's nice now and lives with us

I had to give up my dog when I was deployed to Germany because they didn't accept Pitbulls. I bawled for days, luckily he went with my good friend and lived with his family.

Yeah really. But tip of the hat to the owners for realizing they can't keep it up and give the animal the care it needs, and know it's better to surrender it. Although it's hard, it's the better choise for the animal.

My big girl Gigantor ended up with rot after a minor injury and we treated it at the vet but she ended up needing an amputation despite treatment. Unfortunately she didn’t make it through her amputation. It was so horrible to experience and I blamed myself for such a long time. I miss her so much. Thank you for taking the time to educate others about this.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Its always a risk when any animal requires a medical procedure but you never think it will actually happen to you. You went to the vet and gave Gigantor the best chance at a healthy life. I'm glad you no longer blame yourself because thing like this are not anyone's fault.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m sure she was loved by and and she loved you too. I’ve always been fond of lizards but haven’t gotten to own one yet. If anything happened to my cats though I would be devastated.

I just want to say this to any owner that gives up their pet for adoption: you’re doing the right thing. You’re being a good owner realizing your own limits and putting the animal first. Giving up an animal sucks but sometimes it’s the right thing for everyone involved

In complete agreement. Yes you have to be responsible when owning any kind of pet. It stinks, but sometimes the responsible action is to realize your own limits and let the animal go to someone who doesn’t have said limits.

Totally agree. A lot of people seem to have a bias against people who give pets up for adoption saying stuff like "they shouldnt've gotten it if they couldn't take care of it" despite having no clue of the circumstances.

@@scalesandfloof6582 i direct this to all the people who own fish in the worst conditions, they’re so mistreated and there’s no reason to own an animal if you can’t take care of it. i hate how people just treat them like room decorations, AS IF that 1 gallon tank with green sludge on the glass and your half dead fish look good🙄

You can totally see how much Goober was loved. He's totally chill being held, and if he can, wants to snuggle on shoulders. That tells me his first humans were amazing. I hope they continue to love anyone and thing that comes to them in future and my condolences for them having to make the heartbreaking decision to let this baby go somewhere else.

I wish there was less stigma against rehoming pets when the owners can't take care of them anymore. Goober's owners made a very hard, painful decision and it saved the little guy's life. Yes, sometimes people make wrong decisions when they get a pet. Sometimes, their life situation changes. We can think of the circumstances however we want but it doesn't make a difference for the pet that can't be taken to a vet or fed or given the housing it needs to stay healthy and happy. "You made the decision to get this pet, now you have to stick with it whether you can't or not, or you're a bad person!" only punishes the animal. Yes, there is this thing called responsibility but sometimes, the responsible decision is to acknowledge that you cannot keep your pet healthy and alive and that you have to find someone who can, no matter how hard it is for you. I think it's a very brave thing to see and accept when you hit your limit and cherish your pet so much that you put its health needs and life about your wants and find them a good place where it can thrive. I'd rather foster and rehome ten pets that were given up because an irresponsible owner just got bored of them than have one die a slow, painful death because their caring, loving owner feared that giving it up to a home that has the means to care for it would mean they didn't truly love their pet.

Not everybody is priveliged enough to just spend $5000 on a pet reptile without a second thought. Especially when there's proof of excellent care, I don't fault the owner for giving up the pet to a good rescue when it could mean the difference between buying groceries that week or getting the animal the care it needs.

@@Laura_Stern Lots of people are living with budgets that don't have unnecessary purchases, or their situation changed, and something that might have been a luxury they could afford in the past (like an iPhone) is already bought, and wouldn't bring in the money needed if they sold it. Selling an iPhone could bring in a few hundred dollars, but a surgery can cost thousands of dollars, and many people will need to spend some of that few hundred dollars on a new phone because they need a phone for work. I agree that it's important to save for emergencies, but sometimes emergencies come in groups. If you already spent your emergency money on your own medical issue, or or car repairs because you need your car to get to work, or on fixing your leaking roof, and then your pet gets sick... Now what?

@@Laura_Stern so by your logic, nobody should have a child unless they have at least $2 mil in the bank. Because what if they lose their job and the kid gets a cancer diagnosis? Also by your logic, nobody in a developing country should have ever a kid or ever take in a stray dog, because we all know they barely have $100USD in their name at any given time. ...Or instead of sitting up in an ivory tower judging well-meaning people who fell on hard times, we can have an ounce of compassion on those who are less priveliged and realize they, too, love animals and the benefits they bring.

@@Laura_Stern Hospitals have a duty to treat people regardless of their ability to pay. Vets don't. Just like a mechanic can refuse to fix a car, a vet can refuse to treat an animal. And like has been previously mentioned sometimes circumstances change. Covid hit people and companies hard. I had a job making $23 per/hour and saved quite a bit then due to 'restructuring' I lost my job. It took time to find a new one and it ate our saving. My current job only pays $18 per/hour and it is one of the highest in the area. That is a HUGE cut in our finances. If something like that happened to the previous owners a multi-thousand dollar vet bill could cost them their house. No one is untouchable to misfortune we need to show compassion not judgment. At least they took them to Snake Discovery where they KNOW they will be cared for and only handed over to another great home.

Gooberhead is such a beautiful dragon, I'm glad his surgery went well. Anesthesia is always iffy with reptiles. My 7-year-old granddaughter enjoys watching your channel so much. She loves all the animals and because we have always been farm people we also let her watch when everything isn't perfect. She hasn't seen this video yet but she'll be so happy about the outcome. You do such good work, I'm always glad to see you take an animal in need of special care.

Iffy with all exotics. My college professor said guinea pigs "don't have the will to live under anesthesia" due to their intolerance to pain.

I feel so bad for Goober’s previous owners. They absolutely did the right thing in getting him the help he needed, but they clearly loved him a lot. I’m sure his new home will be equally loving, I just wish he’d been able to go back to his previous owners

That was one of the things I really enjoyed at the shelter I worked at. Sometimes when we would have a pet surrendered due to a medical emergency and if the owners had taken the pet to a vet and just couldn’t afford treatment, we’d do it if we could and send the animal back home. Usually in the case of pyometra. Spay and neuter your pets people.

I totally get you, I wish the same. But I also get the other side of the coin - if they couldn't afford this issue, they likely wouldn't be able to afford any additional issues he may have in the future. It's really hard, but recognizing that you're just not at a point where the pet is right for you generally means it's probably better that they go to a different home (unless the original owner's circumstances change substantially).

Do you hear how elitist you sound? I fully understand surrendering a pet you cannot care for in order to give them the help they need. If anything that shows how much the owner loves their pet. That heartbreaking selflessness should not by default put them on a black list, just because they don't have all the money at that one moment in their life.

@@Undomaranel That’s not what they said at all. You just made a bunch of stuff up. There’s no ‘blacklist’, they’re not being banned from owning pets. They literally just mentioned that they may not be able to afford to take the same pet home again.

that is a HUGE dragon, such a pretty one too, his former owners clearly cared for him. You're not instantly a bad owner when your animals have a growing issue/illness/injury, they did the right thing by recognizing they couldn't afford him and surrendered him to you guys, thats the hardest thing to do for sure

I feel sad for the previous owners who couldn't keep their baby just because of an accident, but I'm glad they decided to give it to someone who could afford it

I wish this for more animals, as well. Goldfish being the main example. They’re not easy to care for (they require a ton of space) and they’re definitely not beginner suitable. There’s so many animals that are not beginner pets yet people say they are.

@@7LemonGwen I agree. Most people are uneducated on most animals. Even their own dogs and cats, honestly. But fish are probably the least educated animal people can own. Rodents and reptiles people mistreat just as equally, though. The best beginner fish is a betta fish as they’re small, don’t require much space (5-10 gallons minimum, compared to 75..) and very pretty! Guppies, mollies, platies, and swordtails are also very good beginner species if your child really wants a fish

He's literally just vibing the whole way through this video. You got quite a little gentleman in your care.

IT really sucks that his tail was like that, but it's really great that now he has you guys to take care of him 💖

You know, mammal rescues have programs to help loving but cash-strapped owners pay for veterinary care, thus avoiding the trauma of rehoming for pets needing expensive treatments. I don't know the full situation with Gooberhead's former family, maybe they were facing other life changes which meant they had to let him go. But have you considered starting a fund to help harrassed herp holders pay vet bills? Just something to think about.

I was thinking the same thing. they may not want to take on the responsibility of the screening. Else, maybe they could talk to the groups that do this for mammals and ask them to include reptiles? If they could just give a % of the vet bill from such a fund, it would help a lot!

Goober reminds me of my own beardie Kevin. Unfortunately we lost him to a rare cancer last week. Thank you for showing his journey, It is healing to see your own babies getting better.

Glad Goober Head got the medical help he needed. Good job Snake Discovery for helping one displaced reptile at a time find safe and happy forever home. While educating the public at large and all your fans at home good husbandry of exotic pets. Good job Ed and Emily! Not only entertaining and educating but saving lives. They need capes!

As the daughter of two veterinarians, ASK YOUR VET. More often than not, it's worth the money. Also, if you think there's a problem, address it. If nothing's wrong than that's great, but if something is, the sooner you catch it the better.

I asked him to check one cat's tail or hind legs because the boy is perfectly social until you got near his hind legs. He told me some cats are just like that, and two days after an abscess on the tail burst.

Here in Brazil owning retiles is VERY expensive and hard! So seeing ur videos is very nice! Since I will never have a reptile, being able to see how it is to have reptiles as pet its a very nice experience :) (A normal bearded dragon is like... 500 dolars here 🤡 and we don't really have easily accessible food for them too) Ps: I understand why is hard to have them here, cause if they escape it can ruin our ecosystem :)

"Which came first, the plant or the seed?" This is a play on chicken or egg and my answer for that is egg. Something that wasn't quite a chicken, let's say a proto-chicken, laid an egg that had a modern chicken in it. So the first chicken came from an egg laid by not-yet-a-chicken. I don't think this answer works for plant or seed, though.

The first plants reproduced without seeds (as many of them still do today), so plants definitely came first.

Hi snake discovery I’m 9 and love your channel I used to think of reptiles scary but know I could have a Boa around my hand and be like cute thanks for being the best I love you channel!

I brought my kenyan sand boa to Dr. Gates a few months ago when he was still working at Valley View. His exam was not thorough, he didn’t take my concerns seriously, and was incredibly rough with my boy Winston. I filed a formal complaint to Valley View about his care, as his examination ended up prolonging the treatment my snake needed (and subsequently allowing his condition to worsen), of which would have been caught if he had just listened to my snakes breathing with a stethoscope. Interesting that he is now at a different facility… 🤔 curious if he’s gotten numerous complaints and they had to let him go… So glad that Gooberhead is doing better and his amputation wound is healing nicely, though! ❤️

Thank you for recommending veterinarians and qualified vet staff for suture removals and more advanced care. You guys are so awesome about that. Gooberhead is ADORABLE! Wishing him the best home and hopefully Emily you've healed well from your surgery too!

He’s a beautiful guy and you can tell he was very loved. It really does seem like he just had an unfortunate incident. We lost two cats and a dog to illnesses, and we did everything we could to save them. It was so expensive and nothing we tried helped that much anyways. Vet bills are cruel sometimes. I know everyone needs to make money, but some vets will charge you for the silliest things.

I fully appreciate how considerate you guys are of every aspect of your animals' care. The thing about the stitches, whilst I was curious as to how it's done, I totally respect and agree with the reasons for not filming the process. You guys always seem to have every basis covered. oh Gooberhead is so lovely! great example of how even when we do everything 'right', accidents and sickness still happen to our animals. I just love how he was looking up at you while you spoke.

I really appreciated the thoroughness of your videos! Gotta admit, I didn’t watch this one so much as I listened, it’s just too hard to see that poor boys tail. I’m glad he’s in your loving care!

I know he's a surrender but I feel like his family would really want him back or something. I forgot the terms of your surrender program but like after the surgery and after he's healed I feel like they should get him back. The only reason I say that is because he was taken such good care of and obviously I don't know all the little bits of surrender but I just feel like this was a really hard option since you said they couldn't afford the bills anymore. I suppose I just feel bad for the family since I know if they could they'd pay those bills.

I feel like if he had a wonderful home beforehand, and they just couldn't afford the surgery for something like this, couldn't you start a program to help good pet owners keep their pets? I just couldn't imagine being told my animal needs surgery, and if they don't get it they will die or be seriously ill, and if I can't afford it then I need to surrender them to save them. It would break my heart.

I am so incredibly blessed with my senior rescue dragon, who I got as an adult, that he has only had one infection relating to his basically entire body having stuck shed. Despite heaving him for YEARS with consistent baths, he still has stuck shed in places. His back just shed and peeled for the first time since I was had him- LAYERS of shed came off, and there's still at least one layer still peeling there! I have learned however, for any other people who might have shedding issues, those micro bristle toothbrushes make an amazing exfoliating brush for stuck shed! Gentle circles on shed that's peeling to avoid pulling up any shed that isn't loosened up yet.

Love how chill he was! My dragon is not chill lol she hates everyone but she’s also very scared of anything. She was a rescue. We got her tail looked at because it was darker and stubbed but she had a clean bill of health and just have to watch it so this video is very helpful!

I'm so happy Goober is on the mend! He's stunning, by the way, not that he doesn't already know. ☺️Thank you for showing the veterinary process, encouraging people to see qualified reptile veterinarians, and for not showing the suture removal. You're right - a lot can go wrong if you don't know what you're doing. You do so much for the online reptile community and it's awesome to see how you really try to elevate proper husbandry. I had a possibly similar situation with one of my leopard geckos, but he just detached it, but now its fully rehealed, he was probably a little stressed out then too though, not only was my care a little iffy but also because I didn't do enough research I cohabed two males (I didn't know they where babies)and they where both a little stressed afterwards, I fixed my care though and now a year and a halfish later all my geckos are healthy and happy, I even got another one and might get a fourth gecko this year or the next

Also it wasn't my other gecko that did it I had separated them for a couple weeks to a month at that point but he was still really skittish and stuff, even now he is still kinda jumpy, so that might be part of him forever, but my other two aren't, although my newer ones still kind of a baby so hes also a little skittish, but he doesn't jump he just runs

@@loli_cvnt5622 well the difference would be three leopard geckos and a corn snake to four leopard geckos and a corn snake, plus I need to wait probably a year anyways because I dont want to overload my outlets until I have a third one I really love having them all, but i have things set in place so I dont start to hoard reptiles, which once I have a more consistent money stream would be a possible issue [adhd reasons] if I didn't have them And I think if i was going to get many more I'd go for more expensive ones which easily make themselves harder to collect, like bts or something unlike Leo's Sorry I can't make small comments 99% of the time and I overshare Hope you have a good day ✌

It's always so sad when they lose their tails. When we got our girl Gummy, it was because she was living in a really bad environment (emaciated, kept at room temperature, kept on reptile carpet, brown instead of yellow, etc). We got her all healthy again, and while we were waiting on her new tank to come in, one of our cats somehow broke in and attacked her. She detached her tail and managed to get away, but we felt awful about it since she had just gotten better. Luckily, she detached the whole thing, so it looks great, just a little smooth. The cat also ate the tail, so at least it didn't go to waste...

It's great that the beardie is doing well now. :) Just sad that his previous home had to surrender him. He looked super healthy and gorgeous so to me it feels like a good new home for him would be the best home he can get which also happens to be his old home.

You guys are so great I love that you even have vets on video sometimes, and you give so much information about all the animals I love your channel

Thank you so much so making this informational video about this issue! I rescued a leopard gecko with tail rot and had to do alot of tlc to get him better. But before I encountered it firsthand I had never even heard about tail rot. More people need to know about this issue to prevent it from occuring. Thanks again Emily and Ed 💖

Thanks for not encourage to take the sutures off without a vet. When my dog got spayed and then should take off the sutures I had friends say to me " oh it´s easy to do by yourself. I have done it on my animals, no need to spend money on that". I answered with same argument as you say. I wanted to get the wound checked and confirmed that it healed as it should even if I already knew it did.

I have a bearded dragon and his tail was in the door-way and i opened the door and it got stuck and i had to take it out while he was running but then me and my mom where worried it was tail rot but we started a treatment and its getting a lot better💕🦎

That's a gorgeous beardie, it's a shame their owner had to end up surrendering since they probably would have continued to take great care of him post-amputation. I wonder if it would be possible to set up a fund so that owners who are taking good care of their animals and just need a helping hand can get it and continue their care.

Normally rescues don’t rehome the animal to previous homes due to the reason if this happened again they wouldn’t be able to cover any more vet care. Yes things change, but why risk rehoming an animal to a place you can’t guarantee they’ll be able to cover any future vet visits. Not to mention rescues are normally discounted when they’re put out for adoption and it leaves a really bad message of “if you can’t afford a vet, just give them to us to treat then buy him back for less.”

I've had to deal with some medical issues with my reptiles and absolutely love Dr. Jacobson at golden valley animal hospital in golden valley Minnesota.

He is definitely too beautiful to die. Poor baby! Hope his recovery continues to go well. He looked soooo grumpy the day after surgery when Ed was exclaiming over his tail xDD

I'm a little disappointed your reptile association doesn't have emergency assistance for good owners. If all they had negative in their husbandry was a small bout of hard times while being overall excellent keepers, it would have made more sense to give them the financial support. It's why there are services at various shelters for discounted medical services etc, there just isn't the demand level to support it in the reptile hobby. I think this would have been the perfect case for fundraising instead, considering how often you said he was perfect besides the tail rot.

Today I have lost my bearded dragon to tail rot, this video helped me diagnose him so thank you.

Poor Gooberhead : Hope Emily's procedure went well

So sad that he was so loved and well taken care of by the previous owners, and now they have to give him up because of a surprise surgery. I understand that owners relinquish the right to the animal after they give them up, but it still feels a little sad to then have this animal be adopted by someone else who didn't put the work into raising the animal, and also won't have to shoulder the cost of the surgery. Probably a little simplistic to say, but seems like the original owners did most of the work and the new owners get most of the rewards.

Thank you for being so kind and understanding to people who surrender animals. It's not always just because they don't want their pet anymore. There are so many reasons to rehome an animal. Plus, the animal gets a new home that will love them just as much. :)

It is such a sad situation when a good pet owner has to make the hard decision to give up a pet to give the pet its best chance, but at the same time, I am kind of happy to hear an adoption island story about an animal who was well-loved and never neglected. Loved the video!!

My rescue boy had tail rot and antibiotics and betadine didn't help at all :( Now I have a stubby boy who is living his best life being a lil sass monster

When my dog had to have her tail amputated our vet said that tails often need amputated after trauma no matter what.

It's true! Tails are crucial and have vertebrae so even a minor trauma injury can cause lifelong issues. Better to get the tail removed if it needs it (or docked) than to let it linger and cause more issues later on. Plus, tails have a lot of nerves so there's a whole bunch of goodness that comes from tackling tail issues early.

Always amazes me how Ed went from hiding from the camera and talking as little as possible to fully taking the reigns while Emily is busy/away. We love that for him!

My dog just had to get a growth removed from her ear and another from her shoulder. She had just gone running for the first time after pulling her back before that. Poor thing probably thought she was in the clear. Nope. That was not a fun two weeks trying to stop her from cleaning her stitches and not be too active. But her stitches are out now and she’s almost back to new. So glad Guberhead has you guys to take care of him and that he got his tail sorted out.

Wait, Emily had nose surgery?! Is it something linked with her poor sense of smell? Sorry if it's personal - I've always had a poor sense of smell and wondered if it was linked to an underlying issue so am very curious!

I had nasal surgery to remove polyps, & since they were in there, they widened my sinus openings so I could breathe better. But boy, does it ever hurt during the recovery! I kept dunking my face in a bowl of ice cold water to numb the pain, rather than OD on pain killers. :o

@@noraleestone2859 oh god that sounds awful!! Glad you’re better now..? The doctor said I don’t have polyps, and even though they’re not fun it would’ve been nice to have a solvable problem! I struggle to breathe too! Glad yours has improved!

Responsible pet ownership includes recognising your limits and making hard decisions for their welfare. Respect to the previous owners, and everyone else that's had to make a choice like this, my heart goes out to you

can't you.. idk let his previous owners re adopt him? it seems like they love him very much and only the sudden vet bills got in the way... I know you can't do this for all the animals since some people would abuse it to get their animals treated for free and then claim them back, but in this case I feel like his original owners should get the chance of getting their family member back

I lost my bearded dragon to tail rot about 4-5 years ago now . We couldn't afford the vet bill at the time so we just had to wait until he passed . I still miss him to this day and it was really hard to say goodbye to him . Thank you for making this video so other people can treat it faster than we did :]

Goober is such a beautiful color and so big too. I'm not super familiar with bearded dragons but I dont think I've ever seen one like him.
