I really wish some Producers/Directors would get it together and make a series of this like how they did now for a second time of ShoGun. This is an amazing book that is very hard to put down once started. I keep my hopes up of a series sometime.;8)

Couldn’t agree more with you. It is so difficult to put down and would be so much easier to make into a show when you consider it.

Just finished Shogun a couple weeks ago, I started Tai-Pan but it wasn't hitting the same. After watching this, you've convinced me to give it another go!

Yeah it kind of starts slow but trust me it gets really good!! But the pidgin English and Chinese insulting each other is hysterical to me

Fantastic review! I read Shogun couple of months ago and absolutely loved it. Since then I’d been wanting to read Taipan. After seeing your review I am starting Taipan right away :)

Shogun used to be my favorite novel, and may still be. Years ago, after I think my third time reading through it, I decided to read through the other books in the Asian Saga in publication order. King Rat was fine, but not great. It reminded me a lot of the movie Empire of the Sun, so much so that I wonder if it was inspiration for Spielberg's movie. Regardless, when I got to Tai Pan, I put it down after a couple of chapters, as it just didn't grab me . I am one of those people that will be reading multiple books at the same time. Something else I was reading grabbed ahold of me and I just never went back to Tai Pan. However, I just recently started back in on Tai Pan from the beginning, and for whatever reason, I am really enjoying Tai Pan now. Dirk Struan is an intriguing character. He's very practical and pragmatic. I enjoy how he discusses subjects that some would consider taboo at the time, but he does so in a really calm and disarming way, like a man of science would. Yet he still is very much a James Clavell protagonist, with that expression masculinity some might find somewhat dated these days. He has that stubborn, unmoving strength, passion and fire to go along with his analytic mind. I look forward to finishing the book.

I have always struggled when reading multiple books at a time and now totally avoid it. I’ve found that when I focus on one book my investment is always much greater. I am glad you are sticking with it 👍

I read all the Asian Saga 30 years ago and now I'm into audiobooks as I only have time to delve into novels thru this medium as I work. I finished Shogun a month ago and Tai-pan today - that ending was satisfying. I'm now getting either Noble House or Gaijin. They are all good storytelling.

It’s been a great series so far and I completely agree that the quality of the storytelling is it’s main strength.

Glad you loved this! More than Shogun - wow! I do agree it's a much tighter narrative. I'll be on a discussion on Allen's channel soon talking about this book - another winner by Clavell.

@@sigynigy Toranaga is an excellently written character and if that is what you like from your books then Tai-Pan will not disappoint.

You are spot on! There isn’t much to split them. I prefer the Japanese culture and politics of Shogun but the Characters of Tai-Pan. I suspect the readers mood will usually be the deciding factor.
