Tai Chi's Secret Power: Silk Reeling Energy in Chen vs Yang Style

Chen style Tai Chi is known for its beautiful and explosive spiraling motions called Silk Reeling Energy. The founder of Yang style Tai Chi evolved Chen to Yang style Tai Chi, but is this Silk Reeling Energy lost?
You might think that Yang style Tai Chi is more linear with less twisting. And you'd be right to realize that it's not quite that straightforward because underneath the smooth Yang style motions are how Yang style preserves the essence of Silk Reeling, the way of applying energy as if to manipulate the silk of a delicate silk cocoon.

    This is excellent explanation and demonstration. Teaching is its own deep and sophisticated art form, with which a person can potentially have or decidedly lack mastery. They say to find masters to learn from. But even better to find good teachers. Appreciation for the brilliant work in all respects.

In many cultures, Native American, certain African cultures, crows are the messengers who bridge the physical world with the world that is spiritual and magical, bringing humans the gift of a transcendental knowledge.     Many thanks for explaining the two ways of silk reeling , the art of taking control of the opponent gradually starting with wrist area, arms and body with the help of appropriately coordinated body and leg positions and movements. Tai chi is is instructive in soklvung the close-quarter combat time limitation ( waiting for the opponents´hit is physically impossible as any action falls below 0.2 seconds limit of human reaction time), solving it by sticking hands where boidy contact defence still may take place!!!!     Great video!!! Good explanation. Do you know of any source where i can find information on how Fa Jin and Chan Ssu Chin (reeling silk) are related? It seems to me that when you make the circular motions yourself, you are 'charging' your battery to for example strike. Wind, to unwind. Is this (always) true? I'm currently only versed in Yang style myself but am familiar with Qi gong exercises as well. World like to expand my 'arsenal'. 👍🏻😊

    this is very helpful for any martial arts: off balance your opponent, the difficult thing to do is at ultra high speed, the punch/kick only touch your skin in a fraction of a millisecond, being able to sense the force and deflect it at that very moment is hyper difficult (almost impossible).

    Yes you are very perceptive and insightful! While this creates a meaningful advantage, to be able to make the appropriate contact and sense what you want to sense in a small moment of time is the challenge. So it takes a certain investment in practice to be able to harness this advantage. One key to this is that your blocks need to be light, just grazing over the surface of their body. Like you are painting. Look at brush knee twist step, the brushing is truly like brushing and not a pressing or pushing. Consider too block, parry, and punch, notice how the parry moves not sideways but inwards towards you. These movements elongate the moment of contact, provide a non clashing encounter, and because these elements encourage a longer contact time with greater harmony, the silk reeling becomes more accessible. This takes practice, of course, and your mental focus and intention shifts too. When you consider all the other qualities you have developed in martial art practice, all the skills that others may consider difficult, how have you been capable of these growth? And change? And beyond all those moments of growth now, what else will you master more than those, beyond what you have not mastered yet? Because there is insight, and capacity in you, is there not?     Amazing! Watching this clip I started to think that the concept of silk reeling refers to treating of the skin as clothing (like in judo where grabing the gi gives some advantage). So the skin through fascial connection to the muscle and bones underneath gives access to whole body and through light touch/grab of the skin we can control the body with less effort. Is that right?

    Yes you're totally right. It is indeed like the advantage of knowing how to access the body through the gi. We develop two aspects to support this: 1. Awareness of the opponent's body via the fascia, like how a fisherman can know what is biting and pulling. 2. Connecting and acting through the fascia, this is the development of the dantien centers and how they activate the fascia. Not only your own but allowing your dantien to connect and control their fascia too. This is like the fishing spool and rod. If you're interested in really getting to know this and doing it well, I'll be releasing an online course about it! It's a very useful aspect of Chinese internal arts! Stay tuned. 😃

    Personally I think and feel silk reeling as manipulation of their energy once joined. I think applying silk reeling to external movements is a misunderstanding of what silk reeling is, although that is part of it. If I apply silk reeling to joined energy, I can borrow their energy to power my moves (borrowing).

    He has a great channel! I think the name is very appropriate. He teaches a very practical, very approachable form of Chen style Tai Chi. I don't have any inside knowledge of details of his teaching but the silk reeling movement and effects appear to be similar as shown here. His Chen Taiji is biased towards throws and here I am showing strikes. Another Chen Taichi master I respect is master Chen Yu. Take a look and see what you notice to be similar and different between two Chen style masters. 😃

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but this technique would require some skin-to-skin contact, or close to skin-to-skin contact where the other party is wearing a thin long sleeve. Is there a way to be able to apply this sensing and engaging of the silk reel technique in a situation where there's thick clothing in between contact? For instance, in Judo both judokas are wearing gis which can have thick sleeves. Is it also possible to use this technique with the legs and feet instead of the hands?

    It's easiest to learn this with skin to skin contact but it can be done also through clothing, including thick clothing. It works very well pressing on Gi, and while pulling on Gi. The most interfering clothing is slippery, tight fitting clothing. But as your awareness improves you can do it in those cases as well. The method can be completely applied with the legs and feet for throws similar to what you see in Shuai Jiao. I'll show some of that sometime!

    Sorry sifu - but when you move him on the "surface" are you moving his muscle away from his bone? Rather then the bone itself?

    No need to apologize, you are right! If the skin is wrapping paper and the bone is the present, we are sliding the wrapping paper around instead of pushing the box. Does that make sense?
