I have no idea how TKD looks today, or how it transformed over the last 25 years but this is how I remember it from when I was training in the early 90s. Fast, furious and looking for knockouts. We did a lot more axe kicking though. :)

unfortunately the sport no longer is action packed and is mainly just about scoring points nowadays, fighters mainly use their lead legs to do weird twisty-kick combinations with no kicking power pure speed. olympic sparring is just leg fencing and is pretty boring to watch.

I am not sure that 1999 would be considered "old school" :-) this was after TKD stopped using punches to the head and only sporadically scored for punches to the body, so we can see that both of these fighters have their hands mostly hanging at their sides. "Old School as in 1970s and earlier looked a lot more like Karate matches. Punches to the head were legal as well as punches to the body. The hands more in a defensive position in those days.

Back in my taekwondo days are used to be very good with combat and respect and self-depend which some still do but they care about more winning trophies, and going to the Olympics, winning more plastic medals this seems that some taekwondo styles and some instructors out there I have seen they care about putting more money in their own pockets, then caring about what taekwondo was supposed to I still think taekwondo is the best martial arts out there I think some taekwondo instructors need to rethink what taekwondo is post to represent, and not about winning trophies and medals because that does not make a martial artist is the person behind the belt that makes the difference.

when i did tkd in the late 90s light, medium contact kicks didnt score EVEN if i lands flush............it only scores if it lands HARD and a audio SMACKING sound. and kicks to the head ddnt score unless it lands hard....but new style taekwondo rules all you have to do is tap the electronic chest guard.....and head kicks count even if it barely touches the head gear....like wtf is going on now? People use t make fun of WT taekwondo sparring in the 80's and 90's but now the new style makes old style look super full contact hardcore! lol At least during the 90s we had knock outs nearly 35% of all fights now its like foot fencing.....such a shame.

Tae Kwon Do used to be this cool? Sadly it is mainly McDojos now.
When Taekwondo was about fighting and not exibicionism
I have no idea how TKD looks today, or how it transformed over the last 25 years but this is how I remember it from when I was training in the early 90s. Fast, furious and looking for knockouts. We did a lot more axe kicking though. :)

unfortunately the sport no longer is action packed and is mainly just about scoring points nowadays, fighters mainly use their lead legs to do weird twisty-kick combinations with no kicking power pure speed. olympic sparring is just leg fencing and is pretty boring to watch.
The old good taekwondo 👌

I just watched the US Gold Medal winning gal in Tokyo. That isn't TaeKwonDo!! This is what I learned and fought in the 90's. I won the State Championship for Seniors (over 35) at age 50. If I would have fought like they do today, I wouldn't have made it past the first match. I am enjoying watching this. Thank you for posting it.

If this kind of match will be in my matches, actually I will fear of it but I'll still fight ,and it's such an honor to fight like this ,plus ,is fun too
That's a great counter at 2:01
Entrene TKD en los 90 con el sensei Fernando Oviedo, Campeón Panamericano era mágico verlo combatir, ese estilo es el que aprendí me hizo recordar Vieja escuela por siempre.
I'm from Houston originally. I went to HighSchool with Gene Lopez and his family. I trained taekwondo though through a different school.
This is more like real fighting and UFC than the modern stuff. What rule changes do you think are needed to get things back on track like this?

The WTF is ruled by a buncha pussies now... they're trying to, I dunno... I personally know a 92 TKD olympic gold medalist who's constantly writing letters to the WTF and constantly complaining about it. He owns 4 schools in California... I won't name him here... but there are old school practitioners out there complaining about the new "one legged chicken dancing taekwondo."

Yes, very sad to see what they have done to the sport. All in the name of technological advance
I wish it was still like this
This is how i and my friends train is like but more speed, power and accuracy, and the new style is only a tournament rule it doesn't effect how we train

Indeed
The shout they make when they kick is very original. “A-seyy(아~세이)!” It’s boy’s shout for final blow in the street fights.
I'm glad Non Olympic taekwondo still uses manual point systems. But even then, I want this kind of TKD back
martial arts: “minding its business” olympics: lets make it more *fair* Fencing, Tkd, etc: u gotta be kidding me kendo: bro ive only been in the olympic twice because they cant find a way to make it more *fair*
epoca dorada 👍
This is TAEKWONDO !!!!!
Definitely old school.
Always liked this fight.they seem to use every kick in tkd and seem to avoid those headshots like a couple boxers, not a block in sight
Taekwondo 90'an
They need to bring TKD back to this, just letting them unload into their opponents
Back when guys were trying to take your head off
I must really be old because "old school TKD" to me is the 1970's with at least a reverse punch thrown in here and there 😉

Not gonna lie i like old school more than a new school idk why
Back in my taekwondo days are used to be very good with combat and respect and self-depend which some still do but they care about more winning trophies, and going to the Olympics, winning more plastic medals this seems that some taekwondo styles and some instructors out there I have seen they care about putting more money in their own pockets, then caring about what taekwondo was supposed to I still think taekwondo is the best martial arts out there I think some taekwondo instructors need to rethink what taekwondo is post to represent, and not about winning trophies and medals because that does not make a martial artist is the person behind the belt that makes the difference.

Technology began to be introduced in 2001 then forced on the sport by the governing bodies. It escalated over the years and naturally evolved as athletes adapted to be able to score points using the new tech. The most horrible outcome for the sport
Coloca os videos da olimpiada de Seul
I’ve been doing tkd for a lil over a year, and Olympic sparring is bullshit we need to bring this back
This looks like so much fun. Our modern sparing is more mellow than this.

It is just as fun in some places sparring where I'm at ur free to try those techs however if u wanna win tournaments people seem to go for the ugly beeline for the head meta
That red opponent is have a powerful kick a shit that you will never experience his axe kick. Btw in my highschool days I'm new beginner in Taekwondo and my opponent was a blackbelter she axe kick me on my face but luckily i still got silver medal that was 2016 i can't get over of that fight that was so memorable! 😂
THE FLYING SIDE KICK
good stuff
❤
when i did tkd in the late 90s light, medium contact kicks didnt score EVEN if i lands flush............it only scores if it lands HARD and a audio SMACKING sound. and kicks to the head ddnt score unless it lands hard....but new style taekwondo rules all you have to do is tap the electronic chest guard.....and head kicks count even if it barely touches the head gear....like wtf is going on now? People use t make fun of WT taekwondo sparring in the 80's and 90's but now the new style makes old style look super full contact hardcore! lol At least during the 90s we had knock outs nearly 35% of all fights now its like foot fencing.....such a shame.
¿old school? dancing and curved position?Low guard?? OLD SCHOOL TKD,was REAL MARTIAL ART!
