Wow, how much this beautiful sport has changed. Not for the better. I remember getting totally hooked to TKD after seeing these classic fights. Looking at the Olympic fights now, I'm thinking: WTF happened? Pun intended.

its because of the electronic scoring... they no longer need trembling shock to constitute a point. all that is needed is to touch the sensor faster then the other fighter, i say fighter lightly, and the fastest way is with the lead leg. no power needed... its a shame they allowed the sport to go in that direction....

This was back in the day when Taekwondo sport sparring was about actually fighting and trying to defeat your opponent. Now its just gaming the system to tap the chest gear to register an electronic signal for a point to appear on the screen.

what? I thought TKD (this style) was all about scoring points. which is why there are judges and they are wearing chest protectors and there is a ref. This is not about knocking out your opponent or killing them. WTF style TKD has been about sport, plain and simple. Otherwise, they would be without gear and trying to kill each other. the rules now encourage the new style of fighting to score points; its all about the rules. and i am all about having less people with brain damage, unless you're a brute who is all for that.

Sun Jang Lee was also a super-nice guy and could speak some English at that time. I was at a training camp in Daegu with him in '87 and he was the only guy who was nice to me. Also lost a ton of weight for this -- he was really a fly or bantam weight. I think he lost too much weight to fight in fin and suffered some health issues. The Koreans fought with a beautiful style back then.

Jeff Candy Dae Sung was also a hell of nice guy, respectful and friendly. I went to High School (Moanaloa HS in Hawaii) with him, he was also a very good field goal kicker on our football team, his kickoffs almost always pinned the other team deep.

There are so many rules added in sports that make it boring. For example the NBA , there's no clear path foul. In taekwondo, electronic gears

What we here see, is the real Taekwondo. With powerful kicks and the kicks harder then now in the new hello kitty style Taekwondo. I mean, that now the Taekwondo fighter more physical flexible than past and the kicks in the training have a good style, BUT they have zero powerful kicks. The kicks are so soft. Very garbage the new hello kitty style Taekwondo.

Ya know, ya keep hearing people complain about how old taekwondo is better. This does not look all that different. They throw some more back leg kicks. But overall the athleticism is the same. Take off yalls rose tinted glasses

Except it's not. Now it's all about who can tap the buzzer faster. When I trained in TKD in the mid-90's... Power and precision were as important as speed. Those were half to full contact. You could get *rocked* in just a class spar. I remember being at a tournament in Oklahoma City for my birthday, and sparring in my division. The kid I was matched up against (I was a teenager at the time) I remember blasting him out of the ring at least twice. Granted he was lighter than me, and I wasn't trying to hurt him really. I remember thinking how scared he looked. Wonder if it was his first time around. I remember finding blood on my uniform and belt at the end of that day, and not mine or his, but from another match I watched. (Somebody got blasted in the face.) I rode a high from that tournament for weeks. So it's not rose colored glasses. Times really were different back then. I can also say the same is true when I started training katsujin-ryu shotokan karate. Which was a combat style, not sport, not tournament at all. But also the most fun and best training in a class I ever had. Also intense.
