Taejo of Joseon (Yi Seong-gye) Rivalry and Fratricide | Joseon Dynasty 1 [History of Korea]

Today, I will explore the foundation of the Joseon dynasty 조선 朝鮮 by Yi Seong-gye. The year was 1392. Goryeo has fallen. Its last three kings put to death by General Yi Seong-gye 이성계, who will later become known as Taejo (조선 태조, Great Progenitor). Yi Seong-gye had gained respect by pushing Mongol force remnants off the Korean Peninsula and successfully repelled some Japanese pirates attacks. He was also a key figure in the repelling of the Red Turbans rebels from China who attempted to invade Goryeo.
Yi Seong-gye founded a new kingdom in July of 1392; the Joseon dynasty. Little did he know at the time that his newly founded kingdom would live on for more than 500 years. It is the last dynastic kingdom of Korea. Joseon is also known as the Yi Dynasty, following the clan name of the ruling house.
The foundation of Joseon was quite turbulent, murderous and fratricidal. Yi Seong-gye’s former allies and close counsellors died during these troubled times. General Choe Young had to die for Yi Seong-gye to accomplish his goals and take power. Jeong Do-jeon, who was the principal architect of the Joseon Dynasty’s policies was killed by Taejo’s fifth son, Yi Bang-won who lusted for power… and eventually became the 3rd King of Joseon.
Some figures and topics explored in this video: Yuan dynasty, Liaodong, Manchuria, Ming dynasty, Wihwa island

Just a simple correction, King Taejo did not establish “reverence” to China but rather a “friendship” to China on equal terms. This was because the Haedong worldview was still observed by Korea during this time. This meant that Korea was the center of the Eastern World while China was the center of the Middle Kingdom in the Plains. This is why he fostered friendship with Ming China from the start. Korea called China, “Great Ming” while China called Korea “Great Joseon”. This signified that Joseon and Ming were allies on equal terms and had a great relationship.

I am really into learning the history of the world. l am currently learning about Korea and I love how this country has become one of the greatest nations in the East even after all the internal power struggles, foreign invasions and suppression in the later years of Joseon era.

The Ming Dynasty maintained friendly diplomatic relations with the Joseon Dynasty for more than two hundred years; in 1392, King Taejo Daewang Lee Seong-gye of the Joseon Dynasty was proclaimed king, and Ming Taejo bestowed the title of Joseon on the two countries. The two countries established clan relations. During the reign of Emperor Chengzu of Ming Dynasty, the title of King of Joseon was officially bestowed by Emperor Chengzu of Ming Dynasty. The Joseon Dynasty adopted the policy of "serving the great" to the Ming Dynasty, and in 1592 Japan invaded Joseon. In 1592, Japan invaded Korea, and Emperor Shenzong of Ming sent troops to fight against the Japanese army, which was completely defeated in 1598. The Ming army fought twice, side by side with the Korean army and people, and won the war, which also wrote a glorious page in the history of the relationship between the two countries. The Joseon Dynasty regarded the Ming Dynasty's action as a "renewed favor".

Joseon is supposedly the hanja(Chinese character) reading of the name Asadal, an ancient Korean name supposedly meaning 'morning country', which was also the name of the mythical Dangun's capital. Later, the name became associated with a 'younger brother country of China', as Wiman and Kija Joseons (two ancient countries that supposedly followed the old Joseon) were led by nobles exiled from/assigned by China. The story goes that Taejo wanted to name the country Hwaryeong, but the Ming Emperor approved Joseon.
