Tacoma 5.29 gears on 31.5 in tires!?!?! (265/75/16)

Ойын-сауық

Installed 5.29 nitro gears on my 2016 Tacoma. It currently is wearing 265/75/16 tires. Let me tell you... it's torquey as hell!!! top MPH isn't great though... the truck likes 65-70 MPH which is fine for me!

Good idea making this video. Did you recalibrate the speedometer for the 31.5" tires. The Taco has GPS which constantly monitors your speed. With larger tires, the computer can reset your speedometer. Go to "Tool Setting", then to configure speed, drive for awhile, go back to normal setting and your speedometer will be corrected for the larger tires.

I have a bone stock Trd off road and ive noticed when navigating roundabouts especially, accelerating out of the roundabout the tacoma falls flat on its face because it wants to shift into the next gear but then goes back down because it realizes that it needs power. I also have mild hills around where I live and notice my truck is always shifting all the time and rarely hitting 6th gear. Does a regear help with all this and keep/improve fuel economy?

  • @TheReligiousLeft

It basically adds more torque at the expense of high speed RPMs. So it should help with the issues you’re having and may help with MPG during that time. However… if you’re doing a lot of freeway driving it may hurt that mpg as your engine’s rpm will be higher. After rehearing I noticed my city driving mpg go up and freeway driving mpg going down. The engine also doesn’t like going above 75 mph

6 inch looks great but is dangerous man. Its a major rollover risk both on and offroad. You can fit 35's on a 2.5 to 3 inch lift but its a lot of work. The guys I know that do it have front offroad high clearance bumper, cab mount chop, have to trim in several places, and end up regearing. Plus at that height you'll be less likely to roll over.

Do you have an IG???? I was going upgrade to the 275/70/17 with the 4.88 gears. After watching this video I'm having some slight regret as most folks online stating 5.29s would be overkill on the engine. Did you have any experience with that? You look like you also get a whole lot of good mpg around the city. I hope I get the same results out of the 4.88s. I read some places people staying they get better mpg.

4.88 gears technically is the right play for 275/70r17 tires if you want the versatility of being able to drive at highway speeds. I love the 5.29 gears but I kinda give up the freedom to cruise at anything over 70-75 mph…

@@TheReligiousLeft yeahhhhhhhh that's what I've read after hours on blogs but you look like you have alot more fun with the 5.29s. I hear you can get that changed after you tune your Tacoma but I'm not sure if that's set there for a better reason vs you maximizing what was intentionally designed not to pass up. I know after watching your videos I'm always going have that curiosity of what having that much more power feels like. Are you still getting high teens on mpg these days since you had it? Still no regrets vs going 4.88???

@@TheReligiousLeft back in the old days when everything in the cars were mechanical, the speedometer cables connected to the transmission with a small gear. When modifying final drives and diameters of tires, it affected how the speedometer displayed the speed of the vehicle. It was usually a hit or miss of finding the right size speedometer cable gear to install. With all this new fangled digital stuff and onboard computers, I'm not totally sure on how this would work. Maybe a gps speed app for the phone? I used something like that for my boat speed on the chart plotter. Maybe one of those street radar speed signs to match your speedometer. Anyway, happy motoring!

These newer Toyota use the actual wheel speed sensors and sum/average the reading and use that as the speed/MPH. Tire size will only affect the speedometer reading, gearing has no affects.

Going to 33s and 5.29 gears was the worse thing I ever did to my Tacoma. Heed my warnings for any Taco owners wanting to go down this path. The gains are minimal even with tuning software and gears the Tacoma will still hunt gears and now it makes a horrible whinning noise as most 5.29 gear owners will tell you.
