Tackling the self checkout thieves (UK) - ITV News - 7th December 2018

Apparently, shoppers at self checkouts are stealing large amounts of goods every year, so new technology is being employed to catch anyone stealing from supermarkets in the future in the UK. We see the thieves in action and the new technology to thwart them.
Millions of us use self checkouts, myself included, and we have never stolen, so catching the sometimes brazen thieves days could be numbered. They face more than just being caught, shamed, prosecuted and banned from the store itself, but a criminal record on top as well as a possible lifetime ban from perhaps their one and only local supermarket.

    Oh I see make the customers do the work and then complain when some don't scan all the items. Three for them and one for the shopper being made to do the work🤣🤣🤣 I don't agree with stealing but the stores make their own problems and cause poor customer service. I once stole a bag because it wouldn't scan and I couldn't get help, sue me. 🤣 The self scans make the staff bone idle lazy and reluctant to man the tills. I've no sympathy for the stores. God forbid you ask them to put the items in a bag.🥵

    Serves the supermarkets right for being so greedy. Employ actual staff to actually serve people. Takes absolutely ages to do and load up bags when u have a full trolley. I have never once used these wretched machines without having to call a member of staff over to help. Went to sainsburys earlier and 1st time ever... tills were completely shut.... no option but self service.... they don't take into account people with dyslexia or zero I.T skills. Why should customers have to deal with the stress and labour that the staff get paid for... total greed to keep themselves heavily under-staffed to save a few pay packets. I hate this Morden world. Disgusting

    I always use self check out because, one, it's much, much faster. Two, I can pay with two forms of payment without feeling like a burden. Three, I can get rid of my unwanted change. Four, I don't have to do the pleasantries with a cashier.

  • @rogueuniversities6866

    @rogueuniversities6866

    2 жыл бұрын

    Aldi have sadly started to introduce self-service now. Obviously, it's not faster at all - at a normal checkout, you could put all your stuff on the conveyor belt, walk to the end, then bag as the cashier pushed it through. On a self-service so-called checkout, you have to individually place each item in the scanning area, then in the bagging area. Takes ages. And that's if you don't get the "unexpected item" nonsense.

    Doesn't surprise me. Tesco has always been a scam company. They have, for decades, had so-called special offers that don't show at the till, and often overcharged people - and when they had the double the difference if overcharged policy, it would often be ignored. That meant they got loads of extra money from the people who didn't notice.

    It's the supermarkets fault in the first place. They don't want to pay for the staff at the checkouts so they make the customer do the work of the cashier. I have to admit I never use self checkouts I like to personally go to a cashier no matter how much I have in my basket or trolley. Supermarkets rip people off constantly with the price hikes, bad quality products, bag prices, running out of things so having to buy something more expensive instead etc etc. So I definitely DO NOT feel sorry for the supermarkets.

  • @rogueuniversities6866

    @rogueuniversities6866

    Well said. Stores have tried to force me to use self-service so-called checkouts (no normal checkouts open) so I've ditched the entire lot of shopping and left them to put it all back on the various aisle I got it from. Sadly now even Aldi has started self-service checkouts in some stores. As for stealing, as far as I'm concerned, people have a right to take some things if they're being forced to do the work of the cashier (more, actually, as it's more time consuming to lift out each item one by one, scan one by one, and put in the bagging area one by one, than hand them to staff via a conveyor belt where they can push them through while you bag them). What they take is only a tiny percentage of what staff are paid - paid via the price of the product. It may not be legal, but it's perfectly moral. Sadly jury trial has been removed in many cases but if I was on the jury of a case that was to do with this, I'd absolutely use my right to jury equity (essentially jury nullification) and acquit, whatever the letter of the law says.

    Why is it that everyone who says this is a blue haired twitter user customer and not someone who actually works at the tills? I also think you're not telling the truth, as I've seen only people with large trolleys or lots of alchohol at tills, then again, a lot of the blue haired girls use iPhones despite hating capitalism, so I shouldn't be too surprised. (I've also seen many blue haired people using the self checkouts)

    In my opinion if supermarkets weren’t SO GREEDY with their prices people wouldn’t be forced to steal groceries!! Maybe they need to rethink their high prices and stop ripping people off. Im not saying stealing is right. I wouldn’t do it myself but some people really are down on their luck and have to do what’s necessary to feed their families!!! I feel sorry for those people more than I do the supermarkets!! Now those going in stealing merchandise instead of food now those people I don’t feel sorry for and deserve what they get punishment wise.
