Tackling the Mighty Mississippi | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 28
Motoring a sailboat down the Mississippi River - a bit paradoxical, isn’t it? Back when buying a sailboat was still a distant dream, we can most definitely assert that motoring down a bunch of rivers was not on the to do list. But, sometimes you find yourself in strange situations. And it’s been one helluva journey!
This episode spans the 218 miles of Mississppi River which makes up part of the inland waterway connecting Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico.
We were apprehensive of the Mighty Miss. How would our boat handle in the swift 4-5 knot current? What would navigating around all the commercial traffic be like? Would there be safe places to anchor? Oddly enough, the Mississippi turned out to be one of our favorite parts of this journey. Fall was in full swing and the trees were a kaleidoscope of colors. Passing barges became more interesting and less nerve-wracking. A fog bank kept us on our toes. We found a couple of lovely anchorages, and watched one ahh-mazing sunset.
More music by Common Jack in this episode!
Hope you enjoy,
Lauren & Kirk

I have watched these vids of you going down the rivers so many times now. I grew up in a town 11 miles from Beardstown, IL, on the IL river. I've been Australian for 20 years now, living in Perth, Australia. My husband and I are getting ready to build a 50' sailing cat, and it just boggles the mind that we can leave from here, and dock our boat in Beardstown...11 miles from my hometown. This world is truly amazing, especially when you can explore it by water. You have also made me remember just how stunning these river regions are, especially in Autumn, when the trees are a living Bob Ross painting. Thank you.
I am a captain of a towboat. Thank you for getting the definition of our boats correct. If I had a dollar for every time I had to define it I wouldn’t have to work. Lol.

This is Tammie Miller commenting. You are in my old stomping ground! Grafton has changed so much since the last couple of floods. The flood of '93 wiped out so many of the homes along the river that were up on stilts. I learned to water ski and ride a jet ski and just played and played along that river! This was back in the '80s and early '90s. So much fun was had! I would like to pay homage to my friend Tony Smith who lost his life on that part of the river. He was taking his new sailboat to pick up friends in Grafton when his boat was spotted circling with no-one in it. He was one of those people who always had a smile on his face and was just a joy to be around. It's been a little over 15 yrs. now. So glad to see that you enjoyed beautiful Grafton! It's my favorite fall drive! We have only just found your channel and are enjoying it very much! You have more guts than I do! It's been an amazing trip so far! I never thought about St. Louis not having anywhere to dock. I wonder why in the world that is? We have a beautiful riverfront area with cobblestone streets and horse and buggy rides. Too bad you couldn't stop to enjoy for an evening! The Chain of Rocks canal was just flooded as usual. Roads in Grafton were impassable. Apologies for the book I just wrote! Safe travels to you!
I loved this video. I hold the world record fastest time canoeing the entire Mississippi River. I had to endure those huge barges in a tippy racing canoe. The worst were the barges so big they need three 3 engine tows...that's nine 7 foot props churning up the water. Now add fog and make it 2am....you get the drift...pardon the pun. Loved your videos....keep them coming. By the way I sail out of Milwaukee.
You passed 5 minutes from my house up in Mo. If you go back the same way let us know and we will buy you guys dinner. My husband and I are thinking of sailing when he retires. Your channel makes it real. Thanks for sharing :)
I found episode 27 last night. Went back to episode 1 and binge watched up to here the next morning.
The fog was absolutely beautiful! Obviously a little scary too but man, stunning shots in this one! Well done.
The colours of the trees and shrubs in the Autumnal season was just glorious. Your most beautiful video to date.

I remember stopping to see y'all on my way to work in st louis city, not many sailboats out and about that time of year. totally inspired me and my wife to to do the same just a few more months of saving and we'll be aloof
You two are really good to watch. Your videos are superb. Your chemistry something to envy. Thank you so much. More please.
Fall colors were AMAZING! Miss that about the mid-west.
A couple of things: I watched this at work...on a Sunday...and couldn't help but feel just a little transported to that beautiful, tranquil river on a cool, foggy morning. Living vicariously through you guys while my power boat sits on its trailer under a thin layer of snow and ice. I don't know if I've ever seen someone get so excited over 10 knots so thanks for the chuckle. I sincerely hope the two of you are completely successful in whatever your end goal may be. Until then, try to keep in mind how lucky the two of you are to have each other and to share in this adventure. Cheers, Soulianis!

Thank you for the awesome comment! We're always happy to hear from people when we've inspired some good feelings.
Red sky at night--sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning. Your videos are so wonderful and the trip down the Mississippi (other than being cold) was so beautiful with the fall colors. We are from Indiana and had a 30' S2 on Lake MI in the 90's. We didn't even have a cell phone then but so loved cruising up the west coast and harbor hopping up MI. We had 4 kids who all loved sailing and it was our dream to "someday" make the trip down to the gulf. Unfortunately my husband passed in 2000. You two make the best team and love the adventure. You are truly blessed with this great technology today, video gear and radar, internet etc. Live the dream, life is short. I'm lucky enough to have found your channel so I can live mine thru you. Safe travels and fair winds. You are a wonderful, young couple to share your adventures. Thank you!!
I remember when my dad Clark drove the family over the Mississippi River in 1983. He said that the St. Louis Arch was the gateway to the west and was over 600 feet tall and had an elevator all the way to the top. That's 60 stories to you and me. The Mighty Missasip. The Old Miss. The Old Man. Deep River. My home is over Jordan.
You guys have become the channel to beat for me. Love the creativity and the bits of humor. Your naturals for this.

You're a wonderful couple. How can you help but love her? Fair winds and following seas from a displaced Minnesota mariner. Aloha!
I spent 13 years on tugs. Running up the Columbia river and snake river systems. Flashback madness!!
The best 23:44 I've spent all week. I was seriously "jones'n" for a Sailing Soulianis fix. Two weeks seems a life time. Drone footage looked like a giant bouquet of flowers. Hooked on your smile too Lauren. Be safe.

Aww, thanks, Steve! Love that simile.
Those barges are massive
Well done! No boats, jet ski's, or kids! Peace and quite of the river and nature! THX!
Great sunset
Hi L & K...for future reference...in thick fog, there's a thing called "Potato Navigation"...where you have a person on the bow with a big sack of potatoes. Every once & a while, you throw a potato out in front of the boat...& if you hear a splash, you keep going. However, if you hear a thump...you take evasive action !!! Cheers from Windsor Ontario, Paul & Mary, SV Winpipe.

Stunning colours foliage and sunset
All I can say is Thank goodness for Radar! That fog really was thick and with all of the barge traffic, traveling in it was really dangerous. So glad there are inlets out of the rivers stream to anchor in. One of the things I noticed for the first time is the reflective tape on all of your life line stantions!(sp) What a great idea for low visibility situations! Those shots on the hill of the fall colors were so lovely but Lauren's hair was far more beautiful! Stay warm kids by serious cuddling!
Beautiful fall scenery! What a view!
Watching this is really special. Seeing the waterways of the US. You can almost imagine how the early settlers boated down the river and what they experienced. Thank you for sharing your journey. ❤️
Nice how you guys show all your “learning by doing”. And all that delay .. never mind .. just gave you the opportunity to enjoy that beautiful Indian Summer. Good sails and enjoy the ride!
Really enjoyed the fall colours!
I think your best video so far, you will really appreciate blue water when you get there, stay safe.
At some boring gym in the Middle East, this vid made me happy looking forward to my boat up north. You guys are doing great
Watching your beautiful episode from chilly Frankfort, Michigan! Went for a bundled up walk this morning along the municipal marina, 12 degrees Fahrenheit. The ice in the harbor is like a patchwork quilt, and was cracking and popping!

The sunset at the end was just great.
When I started obsessing over sailing, I've watched quite a few channels similar to yours. I since stopped obsessing over sailing, but I still follow you guys. Because you are the best! Beautiful photography, a glimpse into everyday hardships, fun personalities. When the outro plays I'm always looking forward to the next episode. Cheers from Sweden!
very mystical river ride. Thank for sharing.
I paddled to the gulf in a canoe. I highly recommend it for other poor people like myself. :) Cool video! Thanks for sharing.

Fall and winter sunsets and sunrises are always the best imo. Something about getting eaten alive by mosquitoes turns me off of watching either in the summer.
Beautiful video! Looks like fun except for the cold! 😊 I’m originally from St Louis and never realized that it had no marinas near downtown for transients. Thanks for great pics!
Loving this journey! Thanks for the videos!!
your channel is one of my favorites . great camera work, great editing and a couple of very likable people ! I wish you nothing but success !
Beautifully documented tour in the heart of America. Thank you for sharing.
Very interesting video, the Fall colors are great.
Great video guys, Keep them coming!
How cool to learn about the chain of rocks at St. Louis! I've driven over that section of river several times on cross-country trips and wondered how the heck any boats ever made it through there?! Thank you both so much for the quality videos...you're looking like seasoned sailing channel vloggers!
Cool video. A step closer to that mooring buoy in Bora Bora... 😁
Amazing Scenery, you guys are living the dream.
Awesome to see another episode. Those barges are absolutely nuts! That sunset at the end was so nice. Keep up the awesome episodes!😀
Amazing autumn scenery and at least you know it would only get warmer as you moved farther south (so Kirk can stop layering). Every moment you spend, good or bad, is an adventure!

The color in the last scene before the outro was stunning.
Binge watching another Awesome trip through our heartland!
Loved this episode
Hi, guys. Had business downstate, stayed in Grafton. Place looked familiar--rummaged thru your vids until I found this episode. I stayed in the building behind Lauren. Couple who runs resort and winery loved your drove video of their establishment. Be advised they now have a cable car running from river level up to the tasting room.
WOW, incredible journey ! You are such a great couple.
What an adventure. Thanks for taking us along!
She does have PRETTY HAIR :) Some great sunsets. Nice video.

Great video! I love your channel, I think it is one of the best. I look forward to it every week.
Another fantastic video! When I first came across your channel (thanks to KZread's algorithms) I thought, great another couple buying a sailboat and putting on KZread, SO GLAD I went back and started with episode 1. You guys capture wonderful moments and locations. Grafton was our favorite river destination, and the time of year is absolutely the best in our opinion. There's a ton of history along that stretch of river, and if you're interested there's a book titled "Thunder Along the Mississippi" by Jack D. Coombe. It's about the Civil War river battles involving Union and Confederate Navy, excellent look into that area's rich history. One last piece of trivia, we used to drag our boat to a small lake in Southern Illinois call Kinkaid Lake, as soon as we'd pass over the "river bridge" there was a small town called Chester, IL. It was the home of the creator of Popeye, with a bronze statue of old Popeye a top of the cliff. As always, great videos!
Wonderful river cruising. Thanks for sharing the amazing scenery.
Nice work guys! Congrats on 33k subscribed! You guys are knocking it out of the park.
